Ananya’s point of view:
“Shush” I whispered yelled at my dumb friends who were fighting in this crucial condition.
“Don’t shush me, shush her” My idiotic friend, Maya whisper yelled back at me.
Seriously, these guys are so childish that they forgot about our actual important mission.
“Guys, look I can see them. Oh! God” I whisper yelled with my jaw hitting the floor and my eyes wide open.
This means my assumptions were right!
That b***h.
“What?” said my other friend Arshi shoving me aside.
“What is it?” Maya turned her attention away from her quarrel with Arshi and pushed her aside to peep in.
“OMG” Arshi yelled looking at it.
“Shush guys” I whisper yelled hitting them on their shoulders.
We will get caught for sure because of them.
“That slut! You were right Anu” Maya said as I pulled both of them away from that classroom.
“How can she do this? Like eww” Arshi said looking like she smelled something disgusting but in the contrary she saw something disgusting not only her, us too.
“I know” I said making the best Monica Geller expression.
I guess, you guys are confused so let me tell you what’s happening over here.
You see, I’m Ananya Murthy. I am 24 years old and I’m in my final year of Masters. Let me tell you something about myself, I’m very well thought and kind person but if some people thought otherwise then it’s not my problem.
Despite my lunacy as other people put it so eloquently, I’m a hard working girl. I want to bag a high paying job once my masters are over and I’m willing to do anything for that but not ANYTHING like my competitor Cassie who has seduced our professor, a married professor might I add and has been getting more marks than me since last few exams.
I know I know I’m a grown up girl and I shouldn’t think that much about marks and grades but my god! It burns my soul that this b***h finds these ways to get better grades.
“How did you even find out about this?” Maya asked still not believing what she saw.
And what we saw was, Cassie in one of the classroom giving a blowjob to our beloved professor. Note my sarcasm.
“Yesterday, Anil went to that canteen where those bitches’ hangout and heard them talking about this. That Cassie was bragging about how she has him wrapped around her finger” I said as we walked out of the university gates.
This is too much to take.
“Didn’t he have a kid few months ago?” Maya asking shivering in disgust.
“Poor girl” Arshi said addressing that professor’s wife.
I hate cheaters. I really do they are just like murders, they kill and break people’s heart. I hope they rot in hell.
“We can’t do anything about it though” Arshi said shrugging her shoulders.
“I mean, we can” I said and all three of us stopped walking.
“What can we do?” Maya asked looking at me in interest. She is my partner in crime. She gets me you know.
Whereas Arshi supports us but is kind of a wuss.
“Before finals, there is a send-off party” I said wiggling my eyebrows.
“Yes” Maya exclaimed before I could even explain my plan.
“Guys, this could get ugly. After all she is a girl” Arshi said biting her nails.
“We’ll think of something don’t worry” I said linking my arm with hers and started walking towards the apartment that all three of us share.
We talked about random stuffs on our way. Our finals in on next month, a week before that is our send-off and pretty much after the finals all three of us will return back to Mumbai.
My parents stay in Mumbai and have been dwelling there since they got married. My dad is a bank manager while my mom is a homemaker. Both of them are a little conservative but they handle my quirks so I love them anyways.
I always handle my issues in an eccentric way while pranks just call my name every single time, so can’t blame me. But in this college I kept myself out of trouble as I got into plenty of trouble in my degree college. I can’t even count the number of times I was suspended; I mean can’t blame them when I set our HOD’s wig on fire.
Hey, that male chauvinist pig was a sexist and he deserved it.
We got into our apartment building, and tommy our neighbor’s dog came running towards me and que Arshi’s squeals.
“God, Arshi he won’t bite calm down” I said sitting on my heels to pat this cute little Pomeranian dog.
“Isn’t it right baby?” I said cooing and scratching his neck, which he loves.
“We have been telling her that since past 2 years and I don’t think anything has changed” Maya said rolling her eyes. Arshi shoved her grumbling under her breathe.
“Where’s mommy?” I asked him to which he wagged her his tail and ran towards our apartment. His owner, Vani is our neighbor who is a sweet lady and is a divorcee but has a boyfriend now who is a cute guy. They are a good couple; they are gross but cute too. You will get to know soon don’t worry.
“Man, I’m so tired” Arshi said flopping on our couch as soon as we got in.
“Completing that project did take half of my will power for sure” Maya said grabbing a cold water bottle from the fridge.
“Oh calm down, it’s not like you did your project on your own. You got it done from that consultancy” I said rolling my eyes walking straight into my room.
I want to get out of my outdoor clothes as soon as I come home, I won’t feel comfortable until I change into my pajama’s. My cute little pink shorts and tees.
You see, my parents are little conservative as I mentioned before and they frown upon me wearing short dresses so as soon as I moved to Pune for masters, I donated all my old pajamas and brought new shots and long tee shirts, the comfortable ones. It’s not like my parents are here to see them.
After freshening up, I came out to see my best friends still in their college clothes munching on chocolates watching TV. These two are hopeless, I thought shaking my head walking towards the kitchen.
“And for your information, my guide was a jerk who made me change the project thrice and made me wonder to staff room countless time during the process” Maya said elegantly showing me her middle finger and as a grown up, I stuck my tongue out.
Ah! Take that.
I grabbed a watermelon juice bottle from the fridge and fell on our L-shaped couch.
“Can we watch keeping up with Kardashian?” I asked looking at the TV where some Hindi web series was on.
“Why do you even like that show? It’s pointless” Arshi said crunching her nose in distaste.
“It’s fun seeing them act that stupid” I said like it’s the most obvious thing in the world.
Both chuckled at my answer and played KUWTK on Netflix.
After lazing around for a while, all three of us started studying.
All three of us are not nerds, we party and have fun like normal people but a month before finals and a day before internals, we sit our ass down and study like our lives depend on it and honestly it does.
All three of us are from Mumbai, we met in our degree college in our second year and have been best friends since. Our friend Anil, who we met here has been our close friend. He usually hangs out with his guy friends but is here most of the time as he has a major crush on Arshi. But my god, that girl is so clueless.
She can’t even decipher when Maya and I tease them and sometimes she joins in and let me say it’s a hilarious. And for some reason, Anil finds it adorable.
Que my gag.
She’s not dumb but when it comes to relationships, crush and infatuation her knowledge is lesser than a 10 year old kid.
“Why is this algorithm so freaking tough?” Maya said throwing her arms around violently. See, she’s the dramatic one of all.
“When have any program or algorithms been easy?” I asked appalled by her question.
“Guys, stop goofing around and help me with this concept” Arshi said smacking my head and we all got involved in it.
Our serious study session was disturbed when my phone started ringing.
“It’s my parents, I’ll be back” I said throwing back the paper ball Maya threw at me earlier and Arshi sighed in relief.
Sometimes, I think she would go bald if she continues to stay with Maya and I. We both absolutely drive her crazy and we love every second of it.
I went to our balcony and picked up the call, thank god there is no cold breeze today. I don’t want to be sick during my exams and not to forget my besties would go crazy looking after me.
Yeah, I’m a pain in the ass when …… well in general.
“Hello” I said leaning on the railings.
“Hey Anu, did you have your dinner?” Mom asked concern dripping in her voice.
“No mom, we were studying. Now, we will order or make something. What about you?” I asked animatingly signing to my friends reminding them of food.
Maya rolled her eyes and took out take out menus to order.
My friends are lazy bums too. No surprises there.
“We just had, your dad wants to talk to you” She said turning on the speaker.
“Hey honey, how are you?” Dad asked in a sweet tone. We just talked yesterday and he still asks the same question every day. You must be wondering why?
Those words basically mean ‘Did you do something today which requires me to drive there and have a meeting with your teachers or worse police?’
And I am not exaggerating.
“I’m fine dad and have been surprisingly a good girl” I answered rolling my eyes.
“It’s a surprise no doubt” He said and I can hear relief in his voice.
Ah, my parents have so much of confidence in me.
“Okay listen, we both have something to talk to you” Mom said and she sounded serious.
“What happened?” I asked standing straight. My parents rarely have something serious to talk about, especially with me.
My parents have had a comfortable life which means a boring one. They come from a good family, which means small family with no drama. They are mature, which means no fighting. Only thing that makes them interesting is me, so that is the reason I get out of every trouble that I get in easily.
“You remember your aunties son’s marriage, that you attended few weeks ago” Dad asked tentatively.
I did, my aunty precisely my mother’s elder sister. Her son’s marriage was in Mumbai a month ago. He is a self-made CEO of his own company and I love him. He is a goof ball who gets me and treats me like a little sister that he never had.
“Yeah, Akshay’s marriage. What about it?” I asked furrowing my eyebrows.
“You see, Akshay’s friend’s family saw you there and liked you. So they asked your hand for their son” Mom asked slowly exploding the bomb.
And I stood there numb.
“So” I asked nonchalantly. This is not the first time, I have gotten a proposal for marriage. I’m not bragging but come on I’m a great catch.
“You know Akshay came today to our home to talk about this” Mom said which meant this is more serious than other proposals.
“Why the hell didn’t he talk to me about this?” I exclaimed getting mad at Akshay.
Why didn’t he talk to me about this before itself?
I would have blatantly told him to f**k off.
I’m a career oriented women, I don’t want to marry some guy and dedicate my life to him so that he can go and cheat on me.
“Because the matter is very serious and he knows you very well” My dad responded sarcastically. Ah! He sure bestows his love on me.
Why am I talking so poetically?
God knows.
“My dear parents, as I have told you guys a hundred nay a million times that I don’t want to get married even if Queen of England asks my hand for her grandsons” I said trying – really trying to be serious.
I can actually hear my parents rolling their eyes.
“Queen of England is not that cruel to destroy her grandsons lives, now listen here. We have thought about this and the guy comes from a really nice family. I have heard about them from Akshay a few times and even from his parents. We have told Akshay to arrange a meeting after a week so come home for that weekend. If you want, you can bring your best friends too” Dad said no wait, he ordered.
And all I did was roll my eyes.
“Dad, if you think I will do whatever you just said, if yes then you don’t know me at all” I said chuckling.
I tell you, my dad is a goofy guy.
“Listen here Miss. Ananya Murthy, when Akshay first told about his friend and his condition we knew that you wouldn’t be able to handle it and we were sure this relation is not for you but that guy’s parents are persistent that you would make a perfect wife for him and for god only knows why” Dad exclaimed admonishingly.
Uh-hu, not the full name.
This is actually serious.
“Wait, what condition?” I asked narrowing my eyes.
“Umm, Ananya” Mom dragged my name. I know this, they do this when things are really bad.
Oh god, is that guy some kind of a gangster?
I know I trouble my parents too much but they want to punish me by marrying me to a mobster. What is he a mafia boss?
Hot but eh!
Or worse, what if he is an NRI?
After what happened to my cousin Priya, I don’t think they will do this to me.
Disastrous story of Priya, tale for another time.
“He has a one year old kid” Mom dropped the bomb ever so slowly making my eyes go wider than ever.
“What?” I exclaimed and started laughing so badly that my stomach started to hurt.
“What happened?” My friends rushed seeing me rolling around on the floor of our balcony.
I waved my hand telling them nothing serious.
They gave me an odd look and went inside. They are used to it so no worries.
“Ananya, stop laughing. We are serious” Dad said raising his voice above my laughter.
“So, you guys are telling me that I have to marry a guy who has one year old baby. Me? Are you guys sadists? You very well know I am total harm to that baby or any baby for that matter. Did you forget my pet golden fish or my other pet rabbit? I am a certified killer of little things and baby is …. What are guys even thinking?” I exclaimed after I was done laughing.
My parents are idiots.
“Oh, we very well know that but for some reason they want to meet you. So move your butt and be here after a week. They will be visiting us on Saturday so be here on Friday” Dad ordered not talking no as an answer.
“Fine” I agreed.
“Fine? You are agreeing just like that?” Mom asked getting shocked.
“What do you guys what me to say? I said yes, I’ll meet the guy and his parents” I said seriously.
“Uh okay, good. See you soon” My dad said dubiously and hung up.
I stood there thinking.
All I have to do is show his parents how much of a klutz I am and trust me that is the easiest thing in the world.
I do have to sacrifice some crockeries for that though. Hmm.
