THE HALLWAY APPEARED to have grown ten-fold in length, but she managed to make it to the bedroom. Nellie had been in to make the bed and open the curtains. Light streamed in through the window and she could see the chickens in the yard scratching for food. Roald would be out there somewhere. Some part of her wanted to call him. She wanted to admit that she wasn’t well, that there was something wrong. But once she went down that path, the “weak woman” judgement was usually not far behind. And she absolutely had to be ready to get that agreement signed, and she had to fight Kylian.
First she needed to get rid of that wet dress. Standing in front of the mirror, she wrestled to undo the laces. The ends hung on her back and she could barely reach them. Where was Nellie?
