Princes and Demons
Roxanne
I couldn't sleep well at night. I felt angry and restless, I got up from my bed and opened the window. The ice cold air filled my lungs and made me shiver a little bit, but it felt good. Until I had a feeling that someone is watching me. I looked down and a little further trying to focus on the shadows of the further forest. Than I heard it... A howl cut the silence of the night. I couldn't see them but something told me that those wolves were watching me. I closed the window fast and hide under my blanket. I just wanted some rest but my dreams didn't bring anything better. I was running in a forest barefoot, in shattered clothes and being chased by a pack of snarling wolves. One of their eyes was so familiar... It was just like Jeremy's eyes. Cold, and grey just like silver. I kept running but I ran into the guy from the other night, when Jeremy saved my ass. He grinned at me with a vicious smile and I heard the snarls and howls getting closer. I hit him hard and my fist left a hole in his chest. Blood poured from his mouth and his eyes turned glassy. I screamed and that was when I woke up. I sat up in my bed and screamed but no sound left my mouth. My heart was pumping hard and my hands were shaking. I glanced out of the windows and I swear I saw a pair of eyes staring back at me. I jumped out of my bed and went to the kitchen. I turned on the lights everywhere except Clarissa's room and took a seat on the sofa. I had my baseball bat in my hands and curled into a ball on the couch. I turned the TV on, but didn't give attention to it. I don't know how or when I fall asleep, but the next time I opened my eyes the winter sunlight was knocking on my eyelids. Clarissa walked in her tippy toes with her breakfast when she noticed my opened eyes.
- Good morning! What are you doing here? - she asked while she placed the tray on the coffee table and sat next to me. I told her how wonderfully I spent my night and she offered me her coffee.
- What happened yesterday really shocked you, isn't it? - she asked and I nodded.
- Not the molester, part of our job to bump into creepy people. Clarissa... I really hurt him and I'm not that strong. I mean, I felt differently when it happened.
- Different how? - I drank a bit of the coffee and sighed. Clarissa grabbed her cream cheese bagel and took a bite while she looked at me like a child waiting for a bed time story.
- Like, for those moments, I've got the power of a beast. I didn't even feel when I hit him and only realized the damage when he was already held by Alexander and the others.
- That happens when adrenaline is overloaded in your body. It happens, what matters is that its over. - I nodded and took her other bagel. She frowned at me but chuckled and we shared breakfast. Her phone suddenly beeped and Clarissa's expression changed.
- Who texted you? - I asked and she blushed a bit.
- Rico. After the other day, I didn't think he will ever text me again. - she seemed confused.
- Aren't you happy about it? I mean his friend Jeremy is creepy, but Rico seems to be a cutie pie. - Clarissa sighed.
- I don't know. - I gently pushed her shoulder with mine.
- Let's find out! - Clarissa smiled and opened the message. Her face lightened up but she didn't say a word. I leaned closer and asked.
-So? - she turned to me with the biggest smile I've ever seen since we first met.
- He will visit next week. He said that he is very sorry for the dinner we missed and he wants to make up for it. - the rest of the week passed away. I kept having the feeling that someone was watching me and from time to time I saw new faces in the crowd. Their eyes were black like Jeremy's when he became mad. Those pitch-black stares always sent a shiver down my spine but I tried not to pay attention. My mind was probably making a trick with me because of what happened. Since that night whenever someone approached me with dirty intentions, I got reckless and even sassier than I usually was. Clarissa once asked me after she overheard a guy inviting me to his hotel room.
- Did the devil crawl into you? - I shrugged.
- Why keep him in impossible dreams? - I asked and she rolled her eyes.
- I understand that, but don't you think that you were a bit bold? - I chuckled.
- I didn't lie. He wouldn't be enough even for light snack. - Clarissa shooed me away while she smiled from ear to ear. I had no idea from where my new bravery came but I was glad for it and for the confidence that filled me. I felt like I was invincible. The day when Rico was about to visit Clarissa arrived and she was getting ready nervously. I was counting the money we made, but sadly the repair of Buggie was still a dream. Clarissa walked out of her room asking me.
-How do I look like? - she was wearing a gorgeous jumpsuit, which had emerald green color and white pearls at its straps and waist. She got on matching highs and light makeup.
-Amazing. Just wow... - she laughed and at that second the bell rang. Clarissa rushed to open the door but tried to compose herself before her hand landed on the doorknob. I prepared my phone and when the door opened I took a picture of the bewitched Rico. He couldn't say a word and when I looked at the picture I saw that his pupils became large making his eyes almost black. Both of them were standing without saying a word just staring into each other's eyes. Finally, Rico cleared his throat and said.
- Cherry, you look amazing! - Clarissa blushed. Rico offered her his arm and she locked hers into his. They walked out of the door and I crossed my fingers for my friend, hoping that her date would go well.
