Chapter 7: Crime Scene (2)

"Sir! Why was I not informed of the capture of the convict?! Wasn't I the one working with him? Why was is Joseph who-" Sebastian was interrupted, usually he was a calm man but at that time in particular his emotions seemed to be gushing out in such a frantic manner which was unlike him.
"It's because you were working with him that we couldn't tell you... Otherwise Irene would have figured it out by just observing you." Bernard explained with a deep sign in his voice, he seemed somehow tired from having to explain that to the man.
"Still there was no reason to capture him like this, furthermore I don't think the case is solved just yet." Sebastian explained, the conviction in his eyes could tell you a lot about what kind of man he was. He was certain there was much more to the case that most of the other officers had overlooked.
"Hm... why is that?" Bernard asked as he moved his head and glanced at the man from beyond the stack of paper on his desk. His interest seemed to be piqued.
"There is something strange about the man we captured, even though he was aggressive, he didn't seem ready to kill and even if he did, he had no tools on him. It's almost as if-" Sebastian was interrupted once more from his rambling as Bernard finished his sentence. "He'd been set up?"
Sebastian's hands suddenly stopped moving and just rested on his sides. "So you knew?" He asked in a surprised tone of voice.
"I assumed as much... but I don't think we can make a move just yet." Bernard said as he gestured with his hand for the man to forget about the case for now.
"Why?" Sebastian asked, his true emotions showing through at that time again. Somehow it seemed like he couldn't control himself very well when it came down to this case in particular.
"Isn't it obvious? We captured the killer, so we shouldn't have a reason to continue trying... at least until another murder doesn't happen, then we'll see." Bernard said as he completely shut down the other's rambling.
Sebastian paused for a moment, then in a low and angry sounding voice asked: "We should wait for someone else to be killed?!"
"You heard me officer. Now settle down." Bernard seemed annoyed and signed once more. He picked up the top documents from the already huge stack he had to work on and signed it, then moved on to the next one.
"Bernard... you've never been the type of man to allow something like this to happen, so why now...?" Sebastian spoke to the man as if they were close friends from childhood. There was a clear hint of dissappointment within Sebastian's voice, directed towards his superior.
"Sebastian, I don't think I need to repeat myself... but we're not friends here, we can go out and have drinks together like the old times... but at work we are superior and officer... I'm your boss at the moment and I don't appreciate you questioning everything I do." Bernard's stern voice sounded as if he was scolding the man but if anything he was trying to hide the fact they were close outside of work.
"Then start acting like it!" Sebastian remarked. "You can't allow something like this to happen, not when you know we haven't captured the criminal, and you're taking away my partner which is-"
"Since when do you lash out like this... you've been acting strange ever since you partnered up with Irene... is he having an influence on you by any chance?" Bernard asked as he crossed his arms, there was no mockery or teasing in his voice, it was a clear and simple question that seemed to make the other hesitate to answer.
"As if I'd let a criminal influence me..." Sebastian remarked in an angry tone of voice. 'I'm just doing this because... because I don't want to leave the case unsolved, I don't want any more people to die...' He thought to himself.
"Good, then leave... We'll talk about this another time, but definitely not now." Bernard said as he gestured to the man and continued working on the documents that didn't seem to have a near end in sight.
"Yes, sir..." Sebastian backed away and headed out the door, he clenched his fists feeling helpless in a situation like this. 'In the end it's only so much a low level officer can do in a situation like this...' He thought to himself as he headed to the room for questioning, there was a woman of considerable height, she was just an inch shorter than Sebastian. With short brown hair only reaching a little bit above her shoulders, she wore a different uniform from the other officers, yet it was obvious she was one of them.
"Officer Sebastian~ You haven't visited me in a while, is there something you need?" She asked with an almost teasing tone of voice as she greeted the man.
"Sam, I need to speak with the convict, Irene Blake." Sebastian said as he went to sit down at the chair next to the woman.
"Blake, huh... Do you have permission from the higher ups?" Samantha asked as she tilted her head to the side. She saw the mans expression and instantly she could tell. "You don't... well then I guess I can give you special permission just this once..." She said with a smile. "The truth is... Irene wanted to speak with you as well, seems like there's something he needs."
"You spoke to the convict?" Sebastian asked with a surprised look on his face.
"While of course, that's what I get paid for doing, isn't it?" Samantha said as she gestured to the room next to theirs. "I'll have to record your conversation but other than that you're free to do whatever you need to."
"Thank you Sam..." Sebastian said as he headed to the room to wait for the man to show up.
"Don't mention it, just buy me coffee next time, alright? The Italian one." Samantha said as the other nodded his head. 'That guy... he's always been so bad at keeping his thoughts to himself... a strong sense of justice and childish naivety won't lead him too far...' She thought to herself as she turned back to her work station and began the recording of their conversation...
Irene was already in the room. He seemed calm and unbothered as he smiled when he saw the man's familiar face enter the room. "I didn't think they'd actually allow you to talk to me... I'm happy..." He remarked as he leaned into his chair, his hands were still cuffed and he didn't hide it, both his hands were on top of the table as if to shot off the cuffs.
"I came here to talk about-" Before Sebastian could even make a move, the other man interrupted him and spoke in a more stern voice as if scolding him.
"That's no way to speak to a convict, is it?" Those words that Irene spoke, seemed to indicate something to Sebastian.
'He wants me to act in front of the cames?' Sebastian realized that if he were to speak to Irene as if they were in private, not only would their deal instantly be revealed but he would be the one in the most trouble out of the two. "Shut up." Sebastian retorted back as he sat down, the look on his face changing completely as he was getting into character. "The criminal was captured but we still need to get your testimony, after all you were the one that lured him in."
"Hm... the problem is that wasn't the criminal I spoke to." Irene said while tilting his head to the side, then leaning on one of his cuffed hands. "It was a fake planted by the real murderer, but I bet none of you pigs have figured that out yet..." The tone in which he spoke almost made it seem like he hated everyone in the station, even the man in front of him.
"How do you know it wasn't him?" Sebastian asked, the look on his face was neutral and the way he spoke didn't hint on the familiarity that the two had with each other at that point. It was all a show, yet it felt too real.
"If you have searched him already you'd know he wasn't carrying a weapon." Irene said as he smiled. "And how could you possibly end anyone without one?" He asked with a bit of mockery clearly hinting in his voice.
"Maybe he was planning to drag you somewhere else." Sebastian said, as it was a simple assumption a lot of people would go to automatically.
"That's possible but... he was far too hot headed to be convincing me to go anywhere with him. And he didn't seem to have any drug that would make me fall asleep either..." Irene deduced. "It's as simple as that, don't go making it complicated." He remarked as he sighed audibly.
'He's spot on... the fact that the man we captured was so unprepared could only mean he isn't the one we're after... but another criminal, a copycat?' Sebastian thought to himself.
"The person we caught... he seemed like an i***t but not the one we're searching for... He wasn't carrying any surgical equipment, and I find it hard to believe that a fidgety man like that would be able to perform a proper surgical removal of a heart then sew the place back up as perfectly as our criminal has... The man we caught is a brute, stupid, hot headed and incapable of thinking forward in time... while the person I spoke to was charismatic, manipulative, scheming..." Irene's deductions all seemed to be flawless in a sense, he was making all these assumptions so effortlessly you could be lead to believe he knew the criminal for himself, which he didn't...
"You're saying there are two different killers? The one that lured you in and the one that was going to kill you?" Sebastian asked as he crossed his arms. 'So far both of us are having the same thoughts... well at least similar... but still this doesn't help us far too much either... There's till a lot more that's missing, the puzzle peaces aren't fitting at all...' He thought to himself as he heard the other's voice which was lower than usual.
"Yes... but not quite... The one that lured me in is the real one, while this guy is just a fake who's never killed in his life at best and a small time agressor at worst... You know? The type you wouldn't want to leave alone with your kids or wife. Someone like that..." Irene spoke in a slow pace as if he was really thinking hard on each word that left his mouth... At that moment Sebastian remembered the man was a criminal who'd swindled loads of money and killed more than ten people in cold blood. That tone of voice, that expression... was something that not every human possessed.
"Even if that's true, the killings have stopped. We don't need to do anything further for now..." Sebastian remarked as he collected himself just a bit. He didn't want to allow himself to look shaken up, even though he was.
"Obviously that's what lazy pigs like yourself would think..." Irene remarked as he squinted his eyes as if he was looking at the other man like pray to be hunted.
"What did you say?" Sebastian's tone changed again, he was just a bit irritated at the man.
"You're all hunting for that paycheck but don't want to do the work you're being paid for... It's pathetic, you even went so far as to get a criminal on your side and all of you are still just as incompetent." Irene remarked, his voce full of mockery, it was obvious he held no respect for the police, he had no qualms about shaming them either. "You're just letting a murderer move around freely and seek more innocent women to kill... I guess that's what you're all any good for these da-"
"Quiet!" Sebastian pulled the man by the collar and slammed his head down on top of the table. For some reasont hose very words urked him in ways he didn't think possible.
"Oh... this is kind of kinky... usually I'd kill someone that does this to me but since you're cute I'll let it slide..." Irene replied with a smile on his face, even though he got hit it wasn't nearly as bad to leave a bruise or to hurt him significantly, almost like the man was holding back on him. "Just this once..." Irene spat out while glancing at the man holding him down.
"Fuck..." Sebastian moved his hand away and walked out the room. He'd lost his cool again, this wasn't like him but why was it so difficult to control himself as he usually did?
"Hey Sebastian that was-" Before Samantha could say anything more, the officer had already walked out of the room. "He really needs a break this guy..." She muttured to herself quietly...
