(Angel)
I jolt awake dripping sweat and looking around me. For a couple of seconds I felt disoriented until I realized where I was. I had a nightmare of my past. It still feels like it was just yesterday when all of that happened. I sighed running a hand over my face and got up. I went to the bathroom and took a shower. Once I took a shower I dried myself and went to my room. I wore my underwear, I grabbed my red and black multi pocket cargo pants, I grabbed a short sleeve red shirt that has two skeleton hands on my breast. I wore my flat, knee high black boots with buckles on the side. I let my hair loose and wore some eyeliner and mascara. I grabbed my backpack and went to the kitchen for some breakfast.
I made some strawberry oatmeal and took out some chicken for dinner tonight. After breakfast I made my way to school. I reached in my backpack for my phone and at the same time took out Colin’s number. He was really nice to me yesterday, but a guy like him would never be interested in a female like me. A murderer. I sigh putting the note back in my backpack. I put on my head phones and pressed play on my phone.
After I reached the school I went straight to my locker ignoring the looks I got from everyone. I grabbed my books for my first two classes and placed them in my backpack. I felt a hand on my shoulder which made me jump and turn only to see Colin. I took off my headphones and looked at him.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t meant to scare you” he says.
“It’s okay. I was distracted. What’s up?” I ask.
“Nothing much. Did you already have breakfast?” he asks.
“Yes” I replied truthfully. I could see disappointment in his eyes and for some reason I didn’t like him being disappointed.
“But I’m still hungry” I lied. His face lit up like a kid on Christmas.
“Let’s go to the cafeteria and have breakfast” he said grabbing my hand and pulling me to the cafeteria
“By the way you look beautiful today” he says making me blush. We walk into the cafeteria and everyone stops talking and looks at us. A squeak leaves my lips and I hide behind Colin. Suddenly, everyone starts talking again and Colin pulls me to a table where I see Trisha and his friends.
“Hey Angel” Trisha smiles.
“Hi Trisha. Hello everyone” I forced a smile at them.
“I’ll be right back with our food” Colin says and leaves before I could say anything.
“So, Angel, we’re having a barbeque Saturday, would you like to join us?” Trisha asks.
“I don’t know. I don’t want to be a bother to anyone” I say.
“You’re not a bother. We would love for you to join us” Dayna says.
“Speak for yourself. She doesn’t belong with our kind. Look at her for goddess sake” Tara snarls. I knew she didn’t like me from day one and she even warned me to stay away from her man, but it is Colin who is always looking for me.
“Watch how you speak to her Tara” Trisha snarls back.
“What’s going on here?” Colin asks as he puts a tray in front of me and the other on the empty seat next to me.
“Nothing. I have a few things to do but I’ll see you later babe. Love you” Tara kisses Colin on the lips again and I see embarrassment or was it anger flash in Colin’s eyes. I grab the egg, sausage and cheese breakfast sandwich and take a bite. I then reach in my backpack and take out some money handing it to Colin, but he shakes his head.
“You’re not paying me back for this” he says and starts to eat.
“I’m sure Colin would love for you to join us” Trisha says continuing the conversation from earlier.
“To the barbeque?” Colin questions and everyone at the table nods.
“Yeah, I was going to ask you if you would like to come” Colin says looking at me. I look around the table to see everyone waiting anxiously for my answer. Suddenly, everyone stiffens and I see a far off look in their eyes.
“We have something to do, but I’ll see you later” Colin rushes out and without thinking he kisses my cheek making me blush. I finished my breakfast just as the bell rang for first period. First, second, and third period dragged really slow. I was now putting my books in my locker and taking out the shorts I brought for P.E. Suddenly, I’m pushed against my locker with force. I turn around to see Tara, Karen, and Ivory.
“You need to stay away from Colin. He is mine and mine alone” Tara snarled.
“I don’t see your name on him” I shrugged.
“You don’t belong in our world. People like you don’t belong with people like us, so you will stay away from him or I’ll make you” I heard it before I felt it. Tara had slapped me. I felt this anger course through my body which is nothing new because ever since my mother and brother were killed, I’m always angry. I just try to cover it up, but not now. I pushed Tara as hard as I could. She stumbled back, tripping over her backpack and falling on her butt. I saw Ivory reach out for me but I stepped to the side and slamming her head on the lockers. Before Karen could move I grabbed my locker door and slammed it against her face making her shriek.
“You b***h” Tara growled lunging at me. She slapped me again. I turned us around kicking her off of me. She hit the lockers, I grabbed her by her neck and began to punch her until I heard a satisfying crunch. I could hear people around us shouting.
“Fight!”
“Fight!” but I was more focused on the three females. Karen lunged at me, but I kicked her in the chest.
“What is going on here?” Colin’s voice boomed making everyone stop. Karen and Ivory bowed their heads.
“Colin… baby” Tara coughed clawing at my wrist.
“Angel” I shudder at the sound of my name leaving Colin’s lips.
“Angel, look at me kitten” Colin said. My head snapped towards him and by just looking at him I felt my anger slowly leave my body.
“What happened to your face?” he asks gently touching my face. I gasped at the electricity I felt every time he touched me. Tara scratched my neck which pissed me off more so I punched her in the face again.
“Easy Kitten. Let her go please”, Colin said softly, yet I could hear the order behind it. For some reason, my body was obeying him and it made me angry. I fought the command and still held on to Tara’s neck for a few more seconds.
“I don’t like to be threatened and don’t ever put your hands on me”. I leaned in closer to Tara and said, “I’m not one to be f****d with.” I let go of her neck, then looked at Colin.
“I don’t like to be ordered around”, I made sure it was cleared to him and everyone else. I grabbed my backpack and slammed my locker shut before walking away from them and out of school. I strapped my bag as best as I could and ran home. I thought that the run would calm my anger, but I was wrong. I went to my room and quickly changed my clothes into some shorts. I took off my shirt and stayed in my sports bra. I went to the back of the house where I had a thin mattress pad about two and a half inches wrapped around a large tree with duct tape. I taped up my hands and began to punch, kick, knee, and elbow the padded tree. This was something I used to do with my real dad before he split.
As I continued hitting the padded tree, images of my little brother’s smiling face flashed through my mind, followed by the image of his dead body. The next image was of mom, her smiling, then her dead body. Images of the three of us laughing, eating together, watching movies, and just spending time as a family flashed rapidly through my mind until they stopped at me kissing their foreheads one last time before they were cremated. I let out a scream before falling to my knees. I was glad I didn’t have any neighbors nearby.
I don’t know how long I was on the ground, but it was starting to get dark. I got up from the ground and walked inside, locking the door behind me and went upstairs. I washed my hair, then washed my body. I let the warm water relax my tensed muscles before I got out of the shower. I wore a tank top and red boyshorts. I then went to the kitchen and began to make my dinner. I decided to make honey glazed chicken and potatoes. As I was finishing my dinner, there was a knock at my front door. I quickly grabbed a knife and cautiously made my way to the front door. I looked through the peep hole only to see it was Colin. I sighed, opening the door. When he looked at me there was this look of guilt in his eyes.
“I’m sorry for earlier” he says, handing me a beautiful blue rose. I have never seen a blue rose before and it was really beautiful. I looked at the Rose, then looked at him and sighed in defeat. I took the rose and stepped to the side, gesturing for him to enter. Once he was in, I closed and locked the door. I turned to see Colin looking at me and his golden eyes were slowly darkening. I realized I was just in my underwear and t-shirt.
“Sorry, I wasn’t expecting company” I said, walking to my room. I grabbed some shorts a quickly put them on.
“I’m sorry about earlier. Please don’t be angry with me”, Colin pleaded.
“I don’t know how you got my body to obey your order, but don’t do it again. I don’t like to be ordered around like some puppet”, I gritted out.
“I won’t do it again. I’m sorry. Please forgive me” he pleaded, giving me those big puppy dog eyes. I felt defeated.
“Fine, I forgive you” I said. The happiness I saw in his eyes was worth it. He lunged at me, picked me up and twirled me around, making me laugh. It’s been a long time since I laughed. As he stopped and slowly brought me down, my chest pressed against his. We were so close but I stepped back. Even if I wanted to, Tara was right. People like me don’t belong with people like Colin.
“What happened earlier at school?” Colin asked, following me into the kitchen.
“Nothing I couldn’t handle” I said.
“I know you can handle yourself, that was clear, but Tara, Ivory, and Karen are saying that you started the fight” he says. I turned and looked at him.
“Have you had dinner yet?” I asked.
“No” he replied. I grabbed another plate and served him some dinner and handed it to him. I then grabbed two cups and filled them up with iced tea. I handed him one, grabbed my plate and walked to the living room.
“You have known Tara, Ivory, and Karen for a while, right?” I asked.
“Yes, we all grew up together” he replies and I nod.
“So, what did you think when they told you that I started the fight?” I asked, then ate a potato.
“That they were lying” he replied, and I looked at him trying to see if he was lying to me, but he wasn’t.
“Are you sure?” I asked just for the hell of it.
“I’m sure. I’ve known them since we were small and I know that Tara can be a trouble maker. Ivory and Karen just follow her. Now you, I can tell you like to stay to yourself and I thank you for spending time with me and my friends. But today I saw that you have a lot of anger inside of you and I don’t know why, but I want you to know that you can talk to me about anything, whenever you want” he says.
“You’re right, I didn’t start the fight. Tara attacked me first and I defended myself. Ivory and Karen tried to also attack me seeing that their friend was in trouble” I admit. He nods and he takes a bite out of his chicken.
“Wow, this is good” he says. I force a smile. I grab the remote and hand it to Colin.
“You can pick a movie” I tell him. He decided on watching ‘Underworld’. We finish eating and pause the movie briefly to take our dishes to the sink and I grab a blanket. We then sit back on the sofa and continue to watch the movie. I was feeling safe in the house with Colin and for the first time I don’t have a knife near me. When the movie finished, I found myself not wanting Colin to leave.
“Would you like to watch another movie?” I asked before I could stop myself.
“I don’t want to get you in trouble when your parents show up” he says looking out the window. I felt sadness make it’s way to my heart but I pushed it away.
“My parents aren’t coming home tonight” or ever, I wanted to add, but I just kept it to myself. He nodded then sat back down on the sofa.
“You can take off your shoes if you like so you can be more comfortable” I said as I looked for the second part of Underworld. Once I found it I went to the kitchen and looked for snacks. We got some popcorn, M&M’s, and soda. We then went back to the living room to watch the movie. We ended up watching four of them and halfway through the fifth one I fell asleep.
