Chapter 9

1495 Words
I was able to distract Brooklyn long enough to head over to the hospital. A nurse took me to a room to wait. In the room, the nurse starts to talk to me. “It is rare that we get anyone in here from the ranked group. I guess your titles are the cause for that. The Moon Goddess probably makes sure that those in the leadership positions have everything they need to protect us. I mean it’s not like we wolves tend to get sick anyway, but every so often we need treatment for minor issues. I’d imagine the pack would think it weird to see their ranked members with the doctor even a little.” The nurse was busying herself with checking my vitals and making sure the room was stocked. I wasn’t fully listening, being worried about what the doctor may find. Once the nurse started talking about how they would view their ranked members visiting the hospital, I focused a bit more on what she was saying. How would the pack feel if they knew I needed to see the doctor and not because of pregnancy or a fighting injury? It’s true that news can spread like wildfire in a pack, especially a big one like this one. The only real way to keep news from spreading in a pack is through Alpha or Luna command. “I mean, it would be worrying to think that ranked members are unable to keep us safe due to some issues they have medically. It wouldn’t be their fault, but it would be hard to relax and feel safe within the pack.” Damn! The nurse is completely right. While the doctor would probably maintain a high degree of professionalism which focused on confidentiality, the nurses may not. There is a huge chance that anyone could find out about my visit here and if it got out that I’m being impacted in a way that could impede my job, what would they say? “I mean you are tasked with keeping the future Alpha safe. It would be horrible to imagine that you are not up to the job. Who would be able to take the job over from you?” The nurse laughs a bit as she continues to buzz around the room. I clear my throat and the nurse stops and looks at me. “Can you tell the doctor that I’m going to go, but I will come back at another time?” Confusion was written all over the nurse’s face. I get up from the bed and start to walk towards the door. “Uh….Gamma, are you sure? The doctor should be here in a minute.” I just nod in response and walk out of the room. There is no way I can take the risk and visit the doctor. No one can find out that I’m running the risk of not being able to fulfill my duty to this pack and to Brooklyn. I will die trying to defend what I love and that has not changed. As I walk out of the hospital, towards the packhouse, I get a text from a warrior saying I have a visitor waiting for me in the back of the packhouse. I turn, slightly, to head in that direction. I’m not sure who it could be, but I also don’t get visitors regularly. As I turn the corner of the packhouse, I notice Daniel sitting on the deck. Brooklyn is at the playground we have for the pups in the pack. She seems to be watching Daniel, but I’m not sure why. “Hey, you.” I say as I walk up to Daniel. I don’t get onto the deck, but he is already walking down the steps to meet me in the field. “I thought I’d stop by to spend some time with you if you aren’t too busy.” I look towards Brooklyn who has gotten off of the playground and was heading towards us. ~Daniel~ I’m getting sick of this damn child. Everytime I try to get some alone time with Melanie, she is always showing up. I need to get Melanie alone and it was proving to be impossible. Melanie still hasn’t answered me and I’m sure it’s because she is trying to figure out what Brooklyn will want to do. I can’t let her interfere, but I know that if I make a big deal about it, it will draw too much attention. Melanie turns to Brooklyn, who has her eyes on me. “Hi Daniel,” Brooklyn says in a quiet voice. “Hey. I hope your afternoon is going well.” I’m still waiting for Melanie to respond to my request. Brooklyn looks at Melanie. “I’m going to go find Stacy. I haven’t seen her since we got back home. Maybe she and I can hang out until dinner.” Melanie nods at Brooklyn and she turns to head into the packhouse. Melanie turns to me and holds her hand out. I take it and she leads us towards the woods. “I was thinking about you today. I’m glad we will be able to spend some time alone.” This is a turn of events. Usually Melanie seems content to have Brooklyn with us any time we are together. I get the responsibility she has to her, but it becomes overwhelming. I pull Melanie closer to me and wrap an arm around her waist. I take the lead in our walk and alter our direction slightly. “Where are we going? You don’t know the territory.” “I just thought we could take a stroll. You will be able to guide us in the right direction. Besides, if anything bad happens, I have the strong Gamma to protect me.” Melanie chuckles and I give her a squeeze. As we continue to walk, I know we are getting close to a section of the woods that are extremely dense with trees and bushes. This is the spot I was hoping to find because it is a bit out of the way and not easily seen by others. I begin to discreetly grab at my sleeve until I can pull the syringe out that I had stashed in my sleeve. Melanie is so consumed with telling me about her college years that she isn’t focused on what I’m doing. We have been walking for a while and I’m finally able to get the syringe fully into my hand. I turn it so it is facing Melanie’s body. I know that we will not be interrupted by any warriors. I’ve been scouting the place for days now and have gotten their routine down pretty well. I discreetly take a look around to make sure no pack member has stumbled into our path. Melanie starts to slow down a bit. “We are pretty far out. Maybe we should head back.” I push her a bit to keep her going in the direction we are heading in. “Ah, come one. We will be fine. Shouldn’t we run into patrol if we get too far out?” Melanie laughs and leans into me. “You’re right. We are perfectly safe. I don’t know why I’m being such a worry wart.” Melanie continues to walk and rests her head on my shoulder as she does. I look over my shoulder a bit to make sure I won’t miss with the syringe. We are nearing a border and I know that I have about 20 minutes before the patrol makes it out this way. I take a deep breath in and plunge the syringe into Melanie, emptying out the contents. It all happens so fast that Melanie doesn’t get a chance to cry out. I quickly anchor her in my arms and speed my walk up to reach the border. I step over and pick Melanie up, bridal style. I have a vehicle tucked a few feet away and I head over to it. I quickly place Melanie in the backseat and open the trunk. I walk to the back and am about to take out some zip ties when my phone rings. I truly don’t have time for this, but I need to take this call. I push the trunk down in case someone comes by. I don’t want them to be suspicious. I’m not sure how long Melanie will be out so I quickly walk off to the side and take the call. I finish the call in a few minutes and I head back to the car. I can hear steps which sound like paws and I can catch a few scents coming towards me. I don’t have time to secure Melanie in the backseat, so I have to hope that I have given her enough wolfsbane. I quickly hop into the car and drive off, away from the packlands.
