LILY'S POV
Mercy Orphanage has been my home for the past eighteen years. From what I could gather, my parents abandoned me at the main entrance of the orphanage when I was only three months old. Sister Mercy was kind enough to take me in.
Since I have been here for 18 years, I don't know how living in the outside world feels like. What I know so well is navigating my way inside the closed walls of Mercy Orphanage.
Sister Mercy normally tells us that if we become good girls we might get lucky and get adopted by billionaires and this is what I was looking forward to so as to get to know about the world once I am out. I have always followed the rules of this place since I was old enough to understand them. I wanted to be the apple of Sister Mercy's eye but she didn't seem to like me.
I have been the most disciplined girl ever but years have passed yet no one is interested in adopting me.
It is frustrating. Does this mean that I am not attractive enough? What is wrong with me? Why am I not good enough?
Today is just another normal day in Mercy Orphanage. I was styling my hair when Sister Mercy came in with a new girl. She was so beautiful and perfect. Her ocean blue eyes and her pretty face made me get attracted to her like a moth to a flame.
"This is your bed from today onwards. I will leave you to settle in," Sister Mercy told her as I watched them from the corner of my eyes.
"f**k you!" She cursed at Sister Mercy and I was immediately worried on her behalf. Abusing the Sister was a big offence here at the orphanage and she will be punished dearly for it.
"Mind your tongue Hannah or else you will hate it here! I can make your life a living hell. Don't push me!"Sister Mercy said before leaving her by herself.
I watched closely as she threw herself on her bed exhaustively.
"What are you staring at?" She turned to look at me and caught me staring.
"Nothing,"I said looking away. I was so embarrassed.
Here at the orphan, the other girls knew that I am introverted and that is why they never hang out with me. I am always by myself, writing in my journal or taking myself for a walk. I was my own best friend and I didn't see a problem in that.
I finished styling my hair and walked to my cabinet to pick my plate. The time was 12:30pm and I didn't want to miss my lunch.
The girl, Hannah, as Sister had called her earlier, was staring at the ceiling board while lying on her bed. Her sharp gaze threatened to pierce through the white ceiling board. She didn't say something to me as I walked past her and therefore I decided to mind my business.
She has her program. She should know that right now it's time for lunch and she was supposed to be heading to the dining hall.
I scurried to the kitchen and I was served rice and beans. I took an orange and went to sit at the corner.
The other girls were in one group discussing the new accountant saying that he was hot as hell but I didn't care about that. I don't normally care so I secluded myself and ate my lunch.
After lunch I busied myself knitting a sweater in the common hall. I only went back to the room a few minutes to dinner.
I was shocked to find Hannah still lying in the same position I left her in. She had not moved an inch and neither had she slept.
I wanted to ignore her but something in me forced me to go and try talking to her.
"Hi, " I greeted her, forcing a smile.
"Go away,"She said, barely looking at me.
"You should go and get dinner. " I reminded her.
"Why?" She turned to look at me.
"I noticed that you didn't have lunch. I know that you are starving,"I told her.
"Are you watching me? Were you paid to watch me?" She asked, sitting upright.
"Paid? Of course not." I told her.
"Leave me alone. Mind your own business." She said through gritted teeth as she stared through the window.
"I am just trying to be your friend,"I defended myself.
"Who told you that I want friends?" She asked and she had a point. I was trying to force myself to help her out yet she didn't need my help.
"You are right. I should go now,"I told her.
"Stay away from me,"She repeated without looking at me.
