The car ride home...
And here I thought the ride with Roger and George in the patrol car was bad? I have never been so uncomfortable in my life. It’s just a girl. Correction, she is a young lady. A very pretty young lady. I’ve ridden in a vehicle before with a female. My own partner Cass is a girl! So why am I feeling like this is different? I just know I’m smiling like a freaking i***t. My cheeks hurt. I decide to look out the window hoping that she doesn’t notice my stupid grin. I shouldn’t get used to this. She probably has a boyfriend—and she’s human. Her name is Tiffeny. Surely she can’t be Roger’s “Tiffany”? Great. Now I need to know if she is or not.
“So how long have you and Roger been dating,” I blurted out trying to act casual. Doing a quick double-take, she asked, “who’s Roger?” Her look when from friendly to a serious scowl in seconds. “I asked you a question, Sergeant Black. Who the hell is Roger? And why do you have the impression that he and I have been dating?” Suddenly my mouth went dry. I tried gulping hoping that would help loosen my heavy tongue. She’s definitely related to Hanna. Yikes.
“Turn here,” was all I could squeak out. After pulling into my drive, she helped me into the house and onto my couch.
“I’m still waiting for an answer, Sergeant,” she looked at me in all seriousness. Looking around at the mess that is my home, she makes her way over the kitchen and gets me something to drink. “Here, this should help with your dry throat. Now please, tell me who is Roger?” Taking the glass, I drink half of it. It has helped. So I proceed with caution and tell her.
“Roger Oren is a fellow officer in the department. He’s been recently promoted to detective,” I started to explain. Tiffeny is listening intently. So why does it seem that I’m trying to sell him to her? Facepalm! “About a week ago, I had car trouble on my way to work. Roger and his partner George Harper just happened to pass by and I hitched a ride from them. During the ride to the station, Roger kept going on about his girl “Tiffany”. I’m sorry to have assumed that it was you,” I said in all sincerity.
“Oren? Oren?” she kept repeating as she walked around my house while picking up my mess. She’s obviously lost in her thoughts. “Roger Oren!” she spoke loudly causing me to jump. “Sorry, now I remember who you’re referring to.” She made room on the couch next to me and sat down. I secretly like this. “My “dating” Roger may have begun in his mind when he ordered a beer at the bar. Our fingers accidentally touched as I handed him back his change.”
“So the jerk lied. I can’t believe we all fell for that.” I shook my head being dumbfounded by his lie. Roger may be a good law enforcement officer, but he’s horrible when it comes to women. We both broke out in laughter until we had tears, and another coughing fit started again. After taking another sip of the drink the coughing eased up. Tiffeny made a quick phone call to whom I don’t know. She then proceeded to check what food was available and fixed us both lunch/ dinner. She’s a great cook. Sometime during her visit, I must have dozed off on the couch. All I remember is thinking that Tiffeny has a nice laugh and a pretty smile.
Meanwhile, back at the Police Station...
Chief Edwards was followed by a very disgruntle Jabberwocky. Her presence at the Broken Badger wasn’t needed nor wanted. She prevented any further questioning with the Blackwater Industries men from happening.
“Do you want this case to move forward or not?!” Chief Edwards yelled.
“Of course I do,” Jabberwocky just blinked in disbelief that the Police Chief would actually reprimand her. “Why wouldn’t I? This “mess” needs to be cleaned up ASAP.”
The Chief rubbed his face in frustration and sighed heavily. “Madam Mayor, do you know exactly the steps we have taken at any possible or known crime scene? There are certain procedures that must be followed in order that we gather all the intel and evidence related to “said cases”. Some of the intel comes through an interview. And today when it's most vital to get as much as we can when we can, YOU just had to be well within earshot to prevent that from happening!”
“I don’t see how me being there would have caused any interference,” she stated nonchalantly. “There many around when I was giving my statement to the officers at the scene. Why would this be different?”
“Two different scenarios. The questions that needed to be asked dealt directly with the active case. And those cannot be discussed in the presence of those not involved. You know this, I shouldn’t have to tell you.” he continued to chide. “Do you want to be re-elected? Then I highly suggest that you butt out of any and all police business and let us do our damn job! I can easily write up those charges from earlier.”
“You wouldn’t dare!”
Standing up from his desk, Fenton Edwards moved passed Jabberwocky and headed out of his office. Leaving the mayor alone. After about fifteen minutes of being ignored a uniformed officer escorted her out of the building then returned to his work. Poor Jabberwocky, she had to walk all the way across the street by herself. Good thing traffic isn’t heavy this time of day.
By the time he made his way into Captain Winston’s office, Lieutenant Barton was already waiting on him. However, he wasn’t expecting the Chief, but Sergeant Black.
“Where’s Mike?” Isaiah asked with confusion written on his face.
“I sent him home. He had a health scare at the crime scene,” Chief Edwards stated.
“Damn. I hope it’s nothing serious,” Isaiah just rattled on. “So, he’s not going to be interviewing me today then?”
“Correct. I suspect within the next day or so.”
“Chief...” Lieutenant Barton started to say but was cut off when Fenton Edwards raised his hand.
“Go back to your desk and gather any and every information you have on the cases that Avery and Rhonda were assigned to. The more details the better. Have them sent directly to my office.”
Next morning...
I find myself waking up on the couch with a pillow placed under my head and a blanket gently placed over my body. Oddly, I think it was one of the better night’s sleep that I’ve had for quite some time. I know that I’m not anywhere near what I should be health-wise, but I’ll take whatever little improvement I can get. Time to get ready for work. Looking around my home, I’m shocked to find it neatly straighten. Tiffeny must have done this while I was out cold. The same dumb grin from yesterday found its way back onto my face. Could she be...? I don’t know, it’s too early to tell. Without my wolf, it’s hard to know for sure. He’s been silent for a long time.
