Jacob arrived at six on the dot. He had dressed casually in jeans and a t-shirt. He knocked at the door and waited, and waited, he checked his watch to make sure it was the right time and knocked again. This time the door was answered by Nina, the nanny.
“Mr Jacob, she is upstairs bathing Chloe you can go straight up.” He walked up the staircase, slightly annoyed that she wasn’t ready as she said she would be. He heard giggling in the bathroom. He walked straight in.
“Perfect timing Nina, she wouldn’t settle, so I had to jump in with her. Could you take Chloe from me.” She said as she turned and came face to face with Jacob. Jacob was finding it a little difficult to breathe. Standing in the bathtub holding Chloe, was the ever-beautiful Alex, bubbles covered some of her body, but there was enough exposure for Jacob to feel his pants grow tighter in response to what his eyes were devouring. Her soft, creamy skin glistering from the water and bubbles, those perfect breasts standing up solid and firm. Her tight, flat stomach, once again he marvelled at the shape of her post-baby figure. Then his eyes brushed over her most intimate part, tight curls covering her precious sensitive area.
“What are you doing in here!” she screamed at him. Her face in a panic, not knowing what to do, she couldn’t reach for a towel without dropping Chloe, so she stood there naked staring at him.
“Nina said you were bathing Chloe, I didn’t realise you were in with her!” He yelled back in his defence, but he was secretly glad he did come in.
“Grab her towel and take her please.” He did as he was told. As he grabbed Chloe, their hands brushed each other. It was like white-hot fire running through his body, if he hadn’t been holding Chloe, he would have pulled back.
“Thanks, take her into the first room on the left, I’ll be in there in a sec.” She seemed to be a little calmer now that she had reached for her own towel and was covering herself. He walked away with Chloe to where she directed him. Everything was set out on the change table, so he decided to dry and dress her. Although he had been an only child, he was older than most of his cousins and always had helped out babysitting them when all the parents would get together for a night out. He chatted away to Chloe as he dried, powdered and dressed her. She had quite a personality for such a young one. He was blowing raspberries on her belly.
“Blabhhh! Do you like that little Chloe? Blabhhh! Yes, you do don’t you?”
“It seems she does.” Jacob turned to see Alex standing in the doorway fully dressed in white cut off jeans and a green tank top. She looked amazing. He shook his head where did that come from? He decided to put it down to feelings of lust at seeing her naked.
“Sorry about before in the bath and all.” He fumbled out an apology.
“It’s ok. Nina didn’t know I had gotten in with Chloe, I shouldn’t have yelled. I was just a little surprised to see you there. Shall we head down for dinner?” He adjusted the all-in-one, so Chloe’s belly wasn’t hanging out. Alex came and took her from him and smiled a kind smile at him. He hadn’t seen that in a very long time.
After dinner Chloe lasted about half an hour before she crashed, so Alex put her to bed.
“Does she sleep well?” Jacob asked her.
“Mmmm, like a baby.” Alex smiled at the old saying she knew some people who had babies that hardly slept at all and hated that saying but Chloe was a gem.
They grabbed their wines and headed for the lounge room to discuss plans.
“Your dad seemed pretty pleased once he had all the paperwork was in hand,” Jacob said.
“I’m sure he did,” Alex replied with a slight edge to her voice.
“You really don’t seem to like him that much, do you?”
“I remember when you first started working for him, you didn’t seem to like him that much either. We seemed to agree on that back then. Actually, there was a lot we seemed to agree on back then.” Alex replied. Alex remembered back, at that time in her life she didn’t think it could get any better. She couldn't imagine anything destroying her happiness. She had been so wrong, so very wrong and it seemed to have gone downhill after that.
“I guess things change.” He said with a sad smile.
“People don’t. He uses his power to get what he wants. He finds out what people want, and then he offers it to them for a price. I mean look at us. You got the business but only on his terms. You are going to be stuck in this marriage forever!” She really wanted to know how he felt about all this. She was pushing buttons hoping to get a response and not a businessman response a genuine emotional reaction.
“It’s not all bad, we use to like each other once, maybe it won't be that bad.”
“That was a long time ago like you said things change.” She pushed a little more.
“Like you said people don’t!” he retaliated.
“The last time we were together, you didn’t think I was enough for you.” She threw at him. His eyes clouded over. She had hit a nerve. “How do you know, you won't be begging to be out of it as soon as we’re married?”
“How do you know, you won’t. I mean you haven’t really proved yourself as a one man woman, now have you?” Bastard. He had to throw that in her face, didn’t he?
“Maybe I haven’t found a guy worthy of me yet?” This conversation was getting really heated.
“Honey, let me be the one to break it to you. There isn’t a guy out there that could earn enough, for you to think him worthy.” How dare he she would never have taken money over love. Never.
“How dare you! I would have given up everything all the money the lot, for love. For someone to love me for who I am and not because I am ‘Grant Spencer’s Daughter’, but I guess there’s no one out there. Funny isn’t it, I thought I had found that once. How badly I was mistaken.” The look on his face he knew, she was talking about their past.
“OK. Stop, Alex this is not going to work if we are continuously at each other’s throats. We need to put the past behind us and work together, so we both get what we want. We’ve both made mistakes and throwing them in each other’s face isn’t going to change that. We need to start afresh. Agreed?”
He was right; screaming at each other wasn’t going to help. She just couldn’t stand that he thought so low of her. That was not her at all. She wished he could know the truth, but then what would that matter he apparently doesn’t like her and she apparently has too many feelings for him and most of them not bad. She took a deep breath.
“Agreed.”
“So we need to go out on a date. Bec’s having a party tomorrow night, do they know you’re back?” Did Bec know she was back? No. No one knew. It’s pretty hard to catch up with friends when they're all out clubbing, and you have a baby. Plus, she was single, and most of them were coupled. Worst of all Kevin would probably be there. Most of the crowd that would be there were Kevin and her friends from when they were going out. It would be awkward, but if she were ever going to be able to show her face around town again, she would have to face her demons.
“No, they don’t, probably a good idea to catch up at a friendly backyard BBQ.” She wondered why he got an invite Jacob had hung with some of them once upon a time, but when Kevin and Alex started dating, he seemed to just disappear from the group. “I didn’t know you were hanging out with that group again.”
“Well, I haven’t been exactly. Shelley invited me.” Shelley, why would she invite him?
“Shelley?” She asked.
“Yeah, well she’s been organising a lot of get-togethers lately. I always get invites, but I always seem to be busy and have been declining.” Shelley was after him! Why did that make her feel so angry, frustrated, pissed off! Alex had no right, Jacob had left her a long time ago, and he was free to see whomever he wanted. But Shelley!
“I’ll pick you up at Eight?” He was standing getting ready to leave. Alex felt a sense of sadness creep up on her; finally, they have been able to have a semi-civil conversation and now he was going. She stood too and regrettably walked him to the door.
“I’ll see you then. Night.” He lent towards her and ever so lightly placed a gentle kiss on her lips. She was frozen to the spot, why was her heart racing faster than a train? Why did her insides feel like a toasted marshmellow? Oh for heaven sake it was just a kiss a platonic peck at that!
“See Ya.” He said and left. She stood at the door, yet to have spoken a word. How is it possible he still had that effect on her?
She remembered the first time they kissed. Jacob was working for her father kinda of like her fathers go-for. Go for this, go for that. Her father had just finished an important meeting, and Jacob came into the kitchen with the dishes from their coffee and tea. He was struggling, and one of the dishes slipped she grabbed and saved it just in time. It was well known that if you broke a bowl, it would come out of your wage and since her father didn’t own any cheap dishes, it would have been quite a hefty amount. He smiled at her, and her legs went weak. All her friends use to ask her what Jacob was like, cause they all thought he was sooooo hot. Laura, Gwen, Stacey and even Shelley had all ask for her to get his phone number for them but Alex was always lost for words when he stood near her, and she certainly didn’t want him dating one of her friends.
“Thanks. You saved me a small fortune.” He touched her hand. To this day she remembers the heat he created rushing through her body just by a simple touch.
“It’s ok.” She remembered thinking. Great the hottest guy on the planet thanks you and all you say is ‘it’s ok’ say something to him, quick before he leaves. “Do you need a hand with any of the other stuff?” She spoke like a reasonable person, ohh the relief.
“Na, I’m nearly done.” Damn! She didn’t want him to leave for the night, and then she wouldn’t see him till tomorrow. She had been hanging out in the kitchen a lot lately hoping to bump into Jacob. Her dad was getting a little suspicious. He wanted her to go out and have fun on her holidays not be stuck inside. Her dad walked into the kitchen at that moment, and they both took a step back.
“Alex, I’m flying out this evening I won’t be back until late next week. Arnold has got tonight off a family emergency. I can leave you some money for takeout if you like.”
“Ahh, Mr Spencer, my mum is cooking a roast, and she would be happy for Alex to join us, if that was ok by you, of course.” Jacob was so polite around her father always treading carefully, there was an excellent opportunity for people to go up the ladder in her father's company. Jacob’s mum, Maria, was her mother’s, Justine, best friend when she was alive, and they spent a lot of time over there. That’s how Jacob, had landed the job in the first place.
“Splendid, tell Maria I appreciate it.” He turned to Alex “Call for the car when you need a lift home, I’m heading out to the airport now. Bye.” He was gone, but Jacob and Alex were in the kitchen alone, no one was in the house. The staff had all been dismissed for the weekend, and Arnold had his emergency.
“I hope you don’t mind me asking like that, I should have asked you first.”
“No, that’s fine. I would love to go.” She smiled at him. A strand of her blond hair fell over her eye, and he reached to move it out of the way. He pushed it behind her ear. Her heart was racing she was scared he would hear it. He ran his finger from her ear to her chin and tilted it up. He lent in very tenderly and so softly placed a kiss on her lips, much like the kiss he had to give her tonight, he pulled back slightly, as if assessing the situation. Did he honestly think she wouldn’t like him kissing her? She smiled, and he lent down again and gave her a passionate kiss that made her knees wobbly and her hands sweat ohhhh she was in love. She was sixteen at the time, and he was twenty-one, and they spent an incredible two years together until that horrible night when he broke her heart.
