Chapter 4

They pulled up to his parent’s house, she remembered it well. They had many dinners here with his family. She often wondered if they knew about the other woman he had dumped her for and if she too visited for meals with them. She shook her head; she certainly didn’t need old images bouncing around in her head. They were here to get the paperwork signed. Jacob pulled up in front of their house, he exited, and she made no attempt to move. He walked over and opened her door for her. “Surely you are coming in?” He said in a tone that left no room for questioning. “I was going to wait here for you?” She replied tight-lipped and without moving a muscle. “My mum knows you’re coming with me, Alex, she would be very disappointed if you didn’t come in.” Great, she thought seeing his parents again was not on the top of her to do list. Too much emotion, what would they think of her now she was a single mum? Her heart sunk, why did she need to deal with his parents. Wasn’t it hard enough people were judging her on a daily basis? Did she need more of this? “Fine, I’ll come in.” Regret already building inside of her. She followed him into the house, and he called out to his mum. She came out from the kitchen and stopped dead. “Alexandria! Oh my,” she came rushing over and hugged her so tight she could barely breathe. “Hi, Maria. It’s good to see you.” She said after recovering from Maria’s hug. Alex had always felt close to Maria this was undoubtedly an emotional time. “It’s been too long; you should not stay away from us like that I missed you,” Maria screamed out to Antonio to come. Shortly after Jacob’s dad was standing staring at her. “Come here and cuddle me, girl. Where have you been? Look at you; you’re all grown up.” He hugged her tight. She was surprised; she didn’t think that they would miss her to this degree. It made her feel special. They indeed had treated her better than her father had in the time she had spent with them. Alex felt this could be a place to offer her savour from the viciousness of what was going on in her life. She looked over at Jacob who looked embarrassed by his parent’s affection to her. His feelings didn’t align with his parent’s. “Alex, you have time for a coffee in the kitchen with me don’t you?” His mum asked. Every time she would come and visit, Maria would take her in the kitchen for a coffee, and they would gossip. Maria had such a large extended family, although she only had Jacob her sisters and brothers all nine of them had three to four children each and someone of them have already started on grandchildren. Maria loved talking about who was doing what or who was doing whom. She was very cheeky for her age. Alex wondered if Maria now gossiped about Alex’s situation. They walked off into the kitchen together. “Alexandria” she sighed as she turned the on kettle. “It’s been too long, darling. Why don’t you come and see me anymore?” Maria and Antonio were the only people who called her Alexandria and got away with it. “I didn’t think it was appropriate to visit still. Jacob has made it quite clear he didn’t want me around at all, and truly it would just have broken my heart to have to see him regularly.” “My, my, little one it must have been hard for you. What is this that I hear you have a baby now? Where is the father? Why is he not involved?” Leave it to Maria to be so direct. “The father is an arrogant jerk, who will think of no one but himself. He deserves nothing.” Alex felt these words fit the situation without giving anything away. “And this little girl, you don’t think she needs a daddy?” “Maria I can assure you this father, I know, would only bring pain and suffering. He has already caused a terrible amount of pain for her.” “Is he married?” Maria asked looking tenderly at Alex. Alex wanted to scream ‘no he just ran away from his responsibilities and is leaving everything up to me!’ “Not anymore.” “Do you love him?” she asked looking at her so sweetly. How was she meant to answer that? “Once I thought I did, but I don’t know now.” “You seem to have been dealing with a lot of pain recently. I heard about Meagan that must have broken your heart. So soon after Chloe was born too. I remember how close you were. Have you even had time to grieve for your beautiful friend?” “It’s been hard.” Tears were threatening to let loose. “In the end, there was only me, Chloe and some friends from Tuscany at her funeral. My father didn’t even fly over. We were meant to be her family, and he didn’t even come.” Tears won the battle and were now moving freely down her cheeks. Maria was standing next to her hugging her, soothing her just like Alex did with Chloe when she was upset. Maria was the closest thing to a mum that Alex had. When she and Jacob were no longer together, she felt like she lost her mum all over again. Maria tried to keep in contact with her, but Alex made it near impossible. Any time Maria would call Alex felt like her heart was tearing over and over again. “No tears now baby, time for happiness and a wedding.” “Maria, it’s an arranged marriage, it’s a business deal.” “Tutt, Tutt, no, no, I know my son. I’ve known him all his life my little Alexandria, and I know my son is still in love with you!” Alex’s breath held in her throat. She couldn’t allow herself to think that way. Maria just wanted it to be so, that was all. She was a romantic at heart. She was still entirely in love with her husband Antonio and wants everyone else to feel the same way. “Oh, Maria. You are such a romantic. He made his choice a long time ago, and he was pretty definite about his decision.” Maria turned, faced her and held Alex’s hands in hers. “I thought you of all people would understand that sometimes the decision is out of our hands.” She smiled and tapped her hands. Alex considered for a moment could there have been more to the break up then Jacob has said? No, there couldn’t be. He was so hurtful. It had to be true. Alex hated that she wanted to know more about this woman that Jacob chose over her. She couldn’t help herself she needed to know. “Maria, please tell me. Did you know the other girl?” Maria looked deep into her eyes so Alex would know that she was speaking the truth. “There was no other girl. My boy was besotted with only one girl, and he never looked sideways at anyone else. I’m surprised that you believed him.” Alex felt anger rise in her. “Maria, you were not there, you didn’t see his eyes. I begged him, I said I would change I would do anything, but he just brushed me aside.” Maria gave her another hug. “If you speak the truth and there was no other girl, then why did he break my heart? I think I would rather know there was another girl then think there was no reason at all for him to do that to me.” “I’m sorry darling, I know it must have been hard but maybe now you could ask some questions and maybe find out why.” What did that mean! No, she got over that a long time ago, and she didn’t want to go back and think about that night. It was too painful. Jacob walked into the kitchen at that moment. He gave them a strange look. “What’s going on?” “Girl talk, let's get this paperwork signed?” Maria shot back at him. They all wondered into the lounge room, and Jacob told them where to sign. “Are you ready to leave?” he was talking to Alex, but still looking sternly at his mum. “Yes, I’m ready.” Maria leaned over, kissed her and whispered to her. “Remember what I said. Take care, my beautiful girl.” “You must come over and catch up soon,” Alex said to Maria They said goodbye to his father and headed for the car. “What was my mum talking with you about?” He was so abrupt. She wanted to turn around and tell him to mind his own business. “Chloe, and her father.” She watched as the expression on his face turned to pure anger. “So what did mum want to know about him?” Jacob asked he tried to seem all blaze about it, but she knew he wanted to know, just like everyone else. “Just the general questions I get all the time, who is he? Do I still love him? Yadda Yadda Yadda, blah blah blah!” She could tell he was dying to know the answers too. “And what did you say?” “The father swore me to secrecy.” She answered. “And do you still love him?” Jacob asked, his eyes did not leave the road. Why did he want to know that? Maria's words did they have an ounce of truth? Did he still love her after all this time? Don’t be stupid, Alex. She chastised herself, only someone as silly as you could be in love with someone that doesn’t want you, for over five years. “I did once, but he makes it very hard for someone to love him.” That was the gods’ honest truth. She felt another tear escape and travel down her cheek. Jacob hated that Alex could walk straight back into his home and his parents love. After all, she did! His mum would have called anyone else all the names under the sun for sleeping around and getting pregnant, then coming home to sponge off her dad. But not innocent little Alexandria! She was sitting there right now expecting sympathy because she had fallen in love with the wrong guy! He could even see a tear running down her cheek. She would get no sympathy for him. She made her bed, and now she was going to lie in it! Poor, Poor Alex, slept around and fell pregnant. Her damn fault! Daddy’s money couldn’t buy her way out of that one, now could it! “So do you want to come with me to drop the paperwork off to your dad?” “No, I need to check in on Chloe, I’ve been gone the whole morning. She hasn’t been without me that long before. Could you drop me at the house before you travel over there?” “Sure.” His eyes sticking to the road, he didn’t want to look at her. “I guess we need to chat about the whole dating scene and stuff. Did you want to come by for dinner and do that tonight?” “Fine.” He said. He wasn’t fine though he didn’t want to spend tonight at her place but sooner or later they needed to start dating again, and from the way Grant was acting, he wanted it sooner rather than later. “Six sound ok?” She asked. “Six, it is. See you then.” She let herself out and went inside. Jacob drove off not looking forward to spending time with her tonight. Well, that’s what he kept telling himself, but when he was around her old feeling started to surface. Did Jacob still have feelings for her? No, he couldn’t possibly. She was a spoilt little rich girl, and he had moved on a long time ago.
