Chapter 6 Three of Them Together

1403 Words
Dylan frowned, feeling like he'd been tricked. Aunt Layla had already got up to prepare breakfast. When she saw Emily sitting on the sofa in the living room, still in her pyjamas, Aunt Layla said cheerily, "Did you get a good night's sleep?" She thought that Dylan would've spent the night with Brianna, but she'd heard him come in the night before. She also knew that he'd slept in his own room. This was the wife that Dylan's mother had picked out for him, so she had to be the best. Now that Dylan was married, Aunt Layla was happy for him as well. Aunt Layla's tone and expression were overly enthusiastic. It made the situation seem somewhat ambiguous. Emily forced out a smile. "Um, yeah." "You should hurry up and get changed. Breakfast will be ready soon." Aunt Layla walked into the kitchen. Emily looked down at her pyjamas. Her clothes were back in the bedroom. Dylan was probably done by now, right? She got up and headed to the bedroom. She stopped by the door and knocked on it. No one responded. She knocked again. There was still no response. Left with no other choice, Emily pushed the door open tentatively. To her surprise, it wasn't locked. However, the moment the door swung open, she was greeted by a gust of cold wind. Dylan sat by the bed, staring at a piece of paper frostily. That was... Emily soon realised what he was looking at. Her gaze swept over the things strewn over the floor and felt humiliated at having her privacy violated. She ran over and snatched the ultrasound out of Dylan's hands, saying accusatorily, "What right do you have to look at someone else's things without their permission? Don't you know what privacy is?" ... Dylan sneered. "Privacy?" That jeering look on his face made Emily's hair stand on end. "You married me while pregnant with some other man's child, yet you're trying to lecture me on respecting your privacy?" "I... I..." Emily wanted to explain, but she couldn't think of the right words to say. Dylan got to his feet and slowly approached her. With every step that he took, the atmosphere became even more oppressive. "Tell me what you're up to." Was she trying to pass the child off as his so that it would be the Clay family's first grandchild? Their earlier deal was merely a part of her plan? The more he thought about it, the darker his expression became. Emily pursed her lips as she backed away while trembling. She had her hands over her abdomen, terrified that Dylan would hurt her child. "I didn't mean to keep this from you. I didn't tell you because we only got married as part of a deal. I don't have any other intentions." Dylan's tone was eerily threatening. "Is that so?" Emily forced herself to stay calm as she backed away. "I swear. How could I possibly lie about something like this? Look, I really don't have any ulterior motives. Anyway, I'm sure that you'll have plenty of ways to get rid of me if I were to latch onto you, right?" Although she didn't make any obvious movements, Dylan still noticed how she protected her abdomen. He fixed his gaze on her face. "Why didn't you make things clear right from the start?" Dylan wouldn't trust her so easily. Emily slowly tightened her hands over her abdomen. This child had come as a surprise, but it was still hers. She'd already lost her brother, so she wanted to give birth to this baby. That way, she and Ellen could go back to how things used to be. It'd be just the three of them relying on each other. She couldn't help trembling at the thought of that night, and her palms became clammy. "I... I've just found out about this." In fact, Emily had yet to tell Ellen about this. She hadn't even dared to leave the ultrasound at their house, in case Ellen were to come across it. She hadn't expected it to cause such a huge ruckus. It made Dylan suspect that she had ulterior motives. She was only 18 years old, yet... How loose of a woman was she? Dylan looked thunderous. He said warningly, "You'd better watch yourself over the next month. If I catch you causing trouble..." "I swear I won't. I'll make sure I toe the line, and you can do anything you want to me if I cause any trouble." Emily hurriedly interjected. Even if she couldn't get him to trust her, at the very least, she couldn't allow him to think that she had ulterior motives. She was already in enough of a pickle. Having yet another enemy would not be beneficial to her getting back what belonged to her. Dylan stared at her, his gaze probing. He seemed to be trying to determine how much of her words he could trust. Suddenly, someone knocked on the door. It was Aunt Layla. "Breakfast is ready." Dylan looked away from Emily and suppressed his oppressive aura. "Clean all of this up." After that, he turned and left. The moment Dylan left, Emily's knees buckled. She leaned against the armoire behind her, taking some time to regain her strength. After that, she squatted down and started picking her clothes up. When she looked at her ultrasound, she couldn't help tearing up. A single tear fell onto the ultrasound. She wiped her face. She couldn't cry. It was a sign of weakness. She couldn't be weak. Both her mother and her baby needed her. Emily folded the ultrasound up and put it into her bag before changing and walking out of the room. No one was in the dining room. There was only an empty coffee mug and plate on the table. Dylan had probably already left after having his breakfast. For some reason, Emily felt relieved. It was so oppressive being around him. She walked to the dining table and had her breakfast. After breakfast, Emily left the villa to head home. She'd promised Ellen that she'd be back, and she didn't want her to worry. The moment she entered the house, Ellen asked, "That Mr. Clay..." "Mum." Emily's tone was forceful. She didn't want to say much on the matter. "He's a nice guy. Don't worry about me." Ellen sighed. She couldn't help feeling disappointed by Emily not wanting to listen to her now that she was all grown up. "I'm just concerned." She was afraid that that man wouldn't treat her well. Emily hugged Ellen. She hadn't meant to be so terse with her mother, but her standoff with Dylan had worn her out. "Mum, I'm just a little tired. I didn't mean it like that." "I know, I don't blame you." Ellen rubbed Emily's back soothingly, seemingly able to sense her fatigue. "If you're tired, you should take a nap." Emily nodded. She wasn't sleepy, but she did feel exhausted. Back in her room, she fell asleep without even realising. At noon, Ellen woke Emily up for lunch. They sat down at the table, and Ellen piled Emily's plate with food. "I cooked your favourite fish and chips." Ellen felt guilty. She'd brought Emily into this world, but she hadn't given her a happy life. In fact, Emily had to suffer with her. Emily looked at the fish and chips. The vague zesty scent of the lemon juice had always been her favourite part of this dish, but at this moment, it just made her stomach roil. She couldn't hold it in any longer and retched. "Emily." Emily covered her mouth and rushed into the washroom. She bent over the sink and let out a few dry heaves. Ellen followed her worriedly, and her face paled at Emily's actions. She'd been through this before, and she had her suspicions, but she couldn't bring herself to believe it. Emily had always been an obedient child, and she hadn't had a boyfriend before. Ellen's voice quavered as she asked, "Emily, what's wrong?" Emily stiffened. Her hands tightened around the edge of the sink. Since she'd decided to keep the baby, Ellen would have to know sooner or later. She turned around and looked at Ellen, then mustered up all the courage she had and said, "Mum, I'm pregnant." ... Ellen staggered back in disbelief. Emily was only 18!
