Emily slowly raised her head. When she saw the man's face, she said in surprise, "Dr. Johns."
She was even more surprised to see a group of people standing behind him. "What are you doing here?"
Harold was the doctor who'd treated her brother. Over the years, they'd got to know each other.
Harold smiled gently. Before he could say anything, the dean of the hospital said, "Dr. Johns is here for a seminar."
Harold was a famous psychiatrist, and he specialised in treating autism.
"What about you? What are you doing here? Are you ill?" Harold asked.
Emily shivered as she recalled Ellen's firm attitude.
"Emily!" Ellen hurried over from the other end of the corridor, still holding Emily's test results. She'd got a shock when the nurse told her that Emily had fled and couldn't help calling out Emily's name agitatedly.
Emily pursed her lips, feeling like she was going to cry again. "Mum..."
Harold said to the dean, "You guys should get going. I have something to attend to."
"We'll leave you to it, then, Dr. Johns. We just want you to know that we're sincerely inviting you to take up a position at our hospital. We'll try our best to meet any conditions that you might have."
Harold said, "I'll think about it."
"This isn't the best place to talk. Let's head out, shall we?" There were people milling about the hospital.
Ellen knew who Harold was. After all, he'd helped foot the bill when they'd really run out of money to pay for her son's treatment.
He was someone that Ellen truly respected.
Ellen held on to Emily's wrist tightly, afraid that she'd run again.
The moment they were out of the hospital, Emily knelt down in front of Ellen. "Mum, please. We've already lost Tristian. Please, let me keep the baby."
Harold frowned. What was she talking about? Soon, he realised what was going on and his gaze fell on her abdomen.
When he saw the tests in Ellen's hand, he was almost certain that Emily was pregnant.
He was filled with shock and disbelief.
He really wanted to know what was going on, but this wasn't the right time to ask.
Emily rarely cried in front of Ellen. Even when her brother had died, Emily had secretly cried, but never in Ellen's presence.
Ellen wasn't trying to run Emily into a corner, but would Emily still have a future if she were to keep the baby?
A woman would become much stronger when she was a mother. It looked like it would be extremely hard to talk Emily out of this, so Ellen sighed and said, "Do what you want."
After that, she turned and left, feeling terrible. She didn't know how to face Emily.
Emily was trying her best to stay strong, but she couldn't stop herself from crying. The pain that she'd been trying so hard to suppress was eating away at her.
Before coming here, Harold had gone to see Emily and Ellen. It was only then that he'd found out that they'd left the country after her brother had died in an accident.
He had no idea what had happened since then.
Harold squatted down and stroked Emily's back comfortingly. She'd only been a teenager when they'd first met, but she was already mature enough to take care of her brother and mother.
Once, he'd witnessed her telling Ellen that she'd already eaten despite only having enough money to get food for two people.
She was so sensible and obedient that it made one's heart ache.
Harold reached out, wanting to caress Emily's head as a gesture of comfort, but she raised her head and looked up at him. "Thank you for everything you've done for us in the past. I'll definitely pay you back when I have the money."
Harold's hand hovered above her head for a short moment before pulling it back. He smiled and said, "Don't be silly. I helped you because I wanted to. You don't owe me anything."
Emily shook her head. "You're kind, and I'll always remember it."
She would definitely pay him back once she had the ability to do so.
Harold helped her up. "Where are you staying? I'll send you home."
Emily was worried about Ellen, so she nodded and gave him her address.
When they arrived, Emily got out of the car. Harold asked her, "Are you going back in the future?"
Emily turned back to look at him and shook her head. "No, I'm not."
It had been an ordeal for her to get out of there.
When Emily got back to their house, she saw Ellen wiping her tears away. She felt like her heart was being ripped in half.
Ellen didn't look at her. "I'm fine, you should go back."
"Mum..."
"It's all my fault for not taking better care of you." Ellen continued wiping her tears away, but they seemed to be endless.
Emily ran over and threw her arms around Ellen. They cried together, venting their pain and hurt.
It took them a long time to calm down. Emily told Ellen all about her deal with Dylan and told Ellen not to worry about her.
Ellen was shocked. How could they treat marriage so casually?
Though Ellen was against this whole arrangement, Emily was pregnant. Her so-called husband probably wouldn't be able to accept this anyway. Perhaps this was for the best.
She would take care of her daughter from now on.
Emily only returned to the villa that night, but Dylan wasn't around. After dinner, she walked around the garden, taking the chance to familiarise herself with her surroundings.
Later, she returned to the bedroom. However, she felt thirsty and went to the kitchen to get herself a glass of water.
After drinking some water, Emily got ready to go to bed when the door was suddenly pushed open.
A tall figure strode in, followed by a beautiful woman.
Emily was taken aback.
It had never occurred to her that Dylan would bring his girlfriend home at such a late hour.
Brianna was just as taken aback as she was. Wasn't this the woman from the hospital?
She looked up at Dylan. His expression was cold and stern.
What had he been angry about?
Did it have something to do with this woman?
Women were always more sensitive to such things. Dylan's out-of-character behaviour made Brianna wary of Emily.
"Uh, I'll be heading to my room." Emily didn't want to stick around.
"Hold on." Dylan looked at her grimly. She was dressed in a conservative nightgown that reached her ankles and exposed her slender arms. It made her look rather innocent.
However, he felt disgusted when he thought of her actions. "Brianna's the only other master around here, aside from me. Do you understand me?"
Emily felt that he really didn't need to mention this. She'd never viewed herself as the matriarch of this family.
"Yes, I know. I'm going to bed." Emily turned and started walking towards the bedroom.
"Miss Davis." Brianna looked at her. "I'm sorry."
Emily was confused and met her gaze in surprise.
Brianna looked apologetic. "I know that you and Dylan had an engagement, but Dylan and I have known each other for a much longer time. If not for you, I would be the one marrying him. We love each other, so..."
"So what?" Emily found her very strange.
She knew exactly what she was here for and what her role was. It wasn't like she was interfering with them.
Why was Brianna saying all of this?
"I just feel guilty. You married Dylan, but he doesn't love you because of me."
"There's no need for that." Wouldn't a normal person try their best to stay out of such awkward situations?
Was Brianna trying to show off her kindness in front of Dylan?
Somehow, this left Emily with a bad impression.
Dylan narrowed his eyes at Emily. "What's that attitude of yours for?"
Emily pursed her lips. All she wanted was to make it through this month so that she could get back what belonged to her and leave.
This woman was the strange one. Why was she saying all of these things?
What could Emily say?
"What do you want me to say?" Emily couldn't think of any way to continue with this conversation.
