Chapter 14 Couldn’t Understand Her

1365 Words
"What is it?" Emily was confused. Dylan stood up and walked towards her with the lights shining on him from behind. He stopped in front of Emily and looked down at her domineeringly. "While we're still married, you can't be intimate with other men." Regardless of the reason for their marriage, there was no way he could allow her to cheat on him while they were still married! This was his bottom line and it concerned his dignity as a man! It took Emily a long time to realise what he was talking about. Who had she been intimate with? She instinctively retorted, "Well, you spent the night with another woman, didn't you? As your wife, should I also demand you to do the same?" Dylan's frown deepened. "I didn't sleep with her." Emily was taken aback. Brianna had definitely spent the night here. Who would believe that he hadn't slept with her? Wait, what did it have to do with her? Dylan's expression shifted. What was he doing? Emily didn't want things to be too awkward between them, so she softened her tone and said, "I'll try my best to do as you say. So..." She waved the documents in her hand. It was obvious what she meant. Dylan hummed in agreement, a hint of anger in his tone. He wasn't angry at Emily, but at himself! Why had he bothered explaining himself to her? He'd lost his mind! This sort of abnormal behaviour made him feel extremely uncomfortable! In fact, he hated it! Emily wanted to finish translating the documents as soon as she could now that she'd got the job at the restaurant. By midnight, she was only halfway done, but she could barely keep her eyes open. To wake herself up, she took the documents to the living room. At this hour, the villa was silent as both Dylan and Aunt Layla were probably fast asleep. Emily put the documents down on the coffee table and went to the kitchen to get herself a glass of water. When she was done, she put the glass down and went back to the living room. She sat down on the floor to continue translating. Dylan happened to come down at this time to get himself a glass of water. When he saw Emily still translating, he frowned slightly. However, he didn't say anything. Emily noticed him, but she didn't say anything either. Dylan was used to there not being any outsiders here. When he saw a glass of water on the table, he picked it up and drank from it. "Uh..." Emily wanted to tell him that she'd drank from that glass, but Dylan had already sipped at the water. She didn't know whether to finish her sentence. Dylan glanced at her and seemed to understand her hesitance. He stared at her for several seconds before looking down at the glass in his hand. He saw the overlapping lip stains on the side of the glass. One of them was his, of course. He could obviously see the other stain under his, which meant that someone had used this glass before him. Judging from Emily's reaction earlier, it had to be her. Emily lowered her head and acted as if nothing had happened. For some reason, though, her face burned. She and Dylan barely knew each other. Sharing a glass was much too intimate. Though he hadn't meant to do so, it still made Emily feel embarrassed. Dylan moved his lips and licked his bottom lip. He didn't know what he was thinking, but he downed the rest of the water. He put down the empty glass and checked the time. It was already one o'clock. "Aren't you going to sleep?" Emily's head was still bowed. She didn't dare to look at him. "I'm not sleepy yet." Dylan watched her silently for a few seconds before turning to head upstairs. When he got to the foot of the stairs, he suddenly recalled Emily saying that she'd failed the interview at his company. This struck him as odd. When he was back in his room, he called Jacob. Being rudely awakened in the middle of the night put Jacob in a bad mood. He grabbed his phone, ready to throw out a string of expletives at the person who was calling when he saw who it was. He immediately lost his nerve and answered the phone. "Mr. Clay." "Go and find out why human resources turned down the person who interviewed for the translator position." "Huh?" Jacob had yet to wrap his head around what was happening, but Dylan had already hung up. Jacob looked at his phone. Had Dylan called him in the middle of the night for such a small matter? His face was almost twisted with anger. Was Dylan deliberately trying to disrupt his sleep? Despite his complaints, Jacob didn't dare to delay matters. The next day, when Aunt Layla woke up, she found Emily asleep on the floor with a stack of papers in front of her. Aunt Layla couldn't understand what was written on them, but she knew that this was probably related to Emily's work. She sighed. "You don't need to push yourself so hard for a job." Although she couldn't understand Emily's actions, she still got a quilt and covered Emily with it. At this moment, Dylan came down and saw Aunt Layla covering Emily with the quilt. He walked over and picked up the translated documents. She'd written down the translations by hand for all 22 pages. It was probably already dawn by the time she was done. Had she spent the whole night working on this? Dylan couldn't help glancing at Emily. Aunt Layla sighed, not knowing what to say. She headed to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. When Emily woke up, Dylan was already having breakfast. She rubbed her eyes and tried to get to her feet, but they were numb. It took her a long time to recover enough to walk. She went to the bathroom to wash up and take a shower to wake herself up. When she was done, she passed the translated documents to Dylan. "Here you go. I've translated all of them." She sat down at her usual spot, then said after some time, "If it's not too much of a hassle for you, you can pay me right now." Emily was afraid that he'd forget. Dylan put down his coffee and looked at her for a few seconds. "I don't have the habit of carrying cash around. Come and see me at the company later." After that, he got up. Emily sipped at her milk, not too bothered by this. As long as he paid her, it didn't matter. The reason why she'd pushed herself to finish translating the documents was that she didn't want it to affect her new job. Not long after Dylan left, Emily went out as well. The restaurant provided a uniform for all of their staff, which consisted of a white shirt, black vest and skirt, and a bowtie. Emily changed into the uniform, which showed off her long, slender legs. Seated at a table near the window, Brianna was in a good mood. Dylan had taken the initiative to ask her out on this day. Although Dylan had admitted that they were in a relationship and had also said that he would marry her, he had never asked her out before. She'd always been the one making the first move. "Dylan..." "I heard that Emily Davis interviewed for the translator position, but you gave the order not to hire her?" Jacob had reported this to Dylan the moment he'd stepped into the office. Brianna was the one behind this. Brianna clenched her fists. How'd he find out about this? Dylan leaned back against his seat. The warm sunlight shone in through the window and landed on him. He propped his chin up lazily and looked at Brianna inquisitively. She was a kind woman who'd saved him when they were kids, and she'd even acted as his antidote for the snake venom. However, at this moment, he found that he couldn't understand her.
