Emily froze. She never expected that Harold would suddenly hug her.
When she came to her senses, she tried to break free.
From Dylan's point of view, Emily looked like she was pushing him away playfully.
He couldn't help frowning.
Brianna said, seemingly unintentionally, "I didn't know that she had a boyfriend."
For some reason, Dylan felt irritated.
He stepped on the accelerator and they sped off.
Brianna pursed her lips. "Are you mad?"
Dylan let out a cold laugh. "Why should I be?"
She'd got herself pregnant before, so it was only natural for her to have a boyfriend!
However, knowing that she had a boyfriend and actually seeing them together were two different matters. It made him inexplicably irritated!
Soon, they arrived at Brianna's place. She didn't get out of the car immediately and looked at Dylan instead. "Aren't you coming up?"
Seemingly afraid that he'd turn her down, Brianna added, "Dylan, I prepared your favourite..."
"Brianna." Dylan cut her off. He didn't know what was wrong with him, but he felt like his mind was in a mess. He ran his fingers through her hair. "I won't be going up today. You get some rest."
"But..." In the end, Brianna didn't say anything else. She got out of the car obediently. "Don't drive too fast, okay?"
Dylan hummed in agreement and drove away.
He headed home, driving at top speed. When he got back, Emily wasn't back yet.
As he unbuttoned his shirt, he asked, "When did she go out?"
"At noon." Aunt Layla took his coat. "Do you want to have dinner now?"
"No, not now." He didn't have the appetite at the moment.
Dylan had already unbuttoned the top two buttons of his shirt. There was nothing tugging at his neck, but he just felt smothered.
This strange feeling made him feel extremely uncomfortable!
He went into his study. Emily's note to him was still on the desk and he held it up while sneering, "You're one of a kind, Emily Davis. You act all miserable in front of me, but you play around with other men behind my back."
He crumpled the note up.
Emily took a taxi back to the villa. Harold wanted to send her, but she didn't want him to know about her and Dylan's relationship, so she turned him down.
She only saw Aunt Layla when entered the villa and thought that Dylan had yet to come back. She couldn't help feeling a lot more relaxed.
Seeing that Emily was in a good mood, Aunt Layla asked, "Did something good happen?"
In fact, nothing had happened, but Emily still smiled. "I just feel freer without him around."
Aunt Layla fell silent.
"Do you mean that I'm redundant?" Dylan leaned against the study's door lazily, a hint of mockery in his voice.
This voice...
Emily turned around stiffly and saw him standing there, his expression dark.
Why was he at home?
Emily had automatically assumed that Dylan wasn't at home when she hadn't seen him around, which was why she'd allowed herself to run her mouth off.
"I..." Emily was about to explain herself when Dylan walked past her into the dining room and asked Aunt Layla to serve dinner.
Emily sat down at the dining table and tried a few times to explain, but she just couldn't find the right words.
Dylan didn't even spare her a glance throughout the meal. It was only when they were done that he said, "You, come with me."
Emily put down her cutlery and followed him into the study.
Dylan sat down behind his desk and put the documents that she'd translated onto the desk. He glanced at her indifferently and said, "You know how to speak Country A's language?"
Emily nodded.
This came as a surprise to Dylan. "Why'd you pick this language up? It's not widely used internationally."
Emily's heart was filled with pain and sorrow at the mention of the place that she'd spent eight years of her life at.
However, no one could understand her pain. She was the only one who was truly privy to all her shame and hardship.
She didn't want to show that side of her to outsiders.
So, she smiled, seemingly relaxingly. "I picked it up because I liked it."
Dylan frowned. She probably thought that she'd concealed her emotions well, but he'd caught the pain and sorrow that had flashed in her eyes.
What was she hiding or covering up?
"Come here." He said.
Emily felt conflicted. She couldn't read Dylan, yet she had no choice but to deal with him.
She slowly walked over to him.
Dylan put another set of documents down in front of her. "Since you speak the language, translate this for me."
Emily looked down at it and saw Pixel Corporation's logo printed on the top right-hand corner of the file.
The night before, she'd been so focused on translating the documents that she hadn't even noticed the logo.
She couldn't help raising her head. "Didn't you guys hire a translator?"
Dylan raised an eyebrow.
Emily took the file and said lowly, "I interviewed for this job earlier. The interviewer was pretty happy with me at first, but he eventually changed his mind and told me that I wasn't suitable for the job."
"Is that so?" Dylan's every word and expression was hard to read.
Emily nodded. There was no need for her to lie.
"I can translate this for you, but..." Emily wasn't trying to reap some benefits for herself out of greed, but she truly had nothing to her name at the moment. She had to do something to help herself.
Dylan looked at her calmly. He didn't wait for her to continue and instead said, "If you're going to ask about Frozen Bay, I can't agree to that. The Davis family doesn't have the ability to handle it."
It was true that Emily wanted to bring up Frozen Bay, but it wasn't to ask him to hand it over to Mason. She had wanted to ask Dylan to hand it over to her so that she had something to bargain with Mason.
Now, though, Dylan had turned her down so directly.
A translated document obviously wasn't enough to exchange for a piece of land.
"Give me money, then." Since she couldn't get her mother's belongings back at the moment, she'd have to earn some money on her own to guarantee her mother and baby's livelihoods.
Emily flipped through the documents. There were around a dozen pages. "100 dollars per page. It's not too much to ask."
Dylan was speechless.
Was the Davis family so short on money?
Why was he finding it harder and harder to understand Emily's actions?
Emily thought that Dylan's silence was a sign of his reluctance. "It's really not a lot, but if you think it's not worth that price, I'll charge you lower?"
"No, that's fine."
"Great." Emily stood up with the documents in hand. "I can't get all of this done right now, so I'll take them with me. I'll give them back to you when I'm done."
"Hold on."
"Huh?"
Emily looked at him in confusion.
Dylan looked her in the eye, seemingly with a hint of warning. "I hope that you'll keep one thing in mind."
