The brambles had grown all over the flower beds and the grass was long on what had once been the green lawns. Some small trees had fallen down during the winter and had been left to lie amongst the bushes. At the same time, wild and riotous though it was, it was very beautiful. The fountain in the middle was very old but exquisitely carved and across the garden lay an artificial lake. Like many of the ancient Chateaux it had once been surrounded by the wonderful formal gardens which were so beloved by the French. It was overgrown and untidy now and yet it was possible to see the pattern of small shrubs and flowers which had been laid out by a Master hand.
