EVAN'S POV
"I have gathered everyone that she spoke to, sir. But I am also afraid that they too don't know much." My servant says in an anxious voice.
"Let them in here, I will question them myself." I order. He bows again and leaves my office.
Apprehension can actually make breathing hard. Why the f**k did she run?
She was literally the most beautiful girl I have ever laid eyes on. She wore no make up or jewelry, yet her natural beauty was honestly breathtaking.
She was extraordinary just like I imagined my mate would be. I knew she was in the room the moment I inhaled that alluring scent, nothing in this world can smell so good and pure afterall.
Strange thing is despite looking like an angel among humans, her facial features did look familiar. But a dream is the only place I could have seen such beauty. If I had seen her in reality I would have chased her to the end of the world. Just like I am going to do now.
"Try to relax. Your girl will come back to you. Just give her a day or two." Mother tries to comfort. She may have been right about my mate showing up today, but hearing her keep talk unrealistic things while I am trying to think is irritating.
She has developed a habit of following me everywhere, her senseless reason being that her gossipers are spreading rumors that I don't like her. She wants to show off how close we are by literally being wherever I am like a bodyguard.
"And how do you know that she will come back?" I question.
"Because any girl would be delighted to be mated to you." She answers, making it sound like it's absurd for any girl to not like me.
"My mate didn't look delighted." I point.
"She must have gotten overwhelmed by the realization that she is the lucky girl, The mate of the powerful Prince Evan. A huge success is sometimes hard to take in." She explains.
"So being mated to me should be some form of success?" I ask, surprised that my own mother sounds more concerned about what a girl would gain from being my mate rather than the life we would have together. Can she ever value anything else that is not fortunate or power?
"That is not what I meant. Of course she is supposed to love you." She corrects. "I was only pointing out that you're the actual embodiment of human perfection and your mate should be thanking her lucky stars that she will get to share a bed with you."
It takes five deep breathes to calm my rage and avoid hitting my own mother. I may not know much about my stunning mate, but it sucks to listen to anyone blurb about her like she is some cheap p********e that will be eager to accept me just because I got wealth and power.
"I need you to leave my office." I order.
"What?!" She exclaims.
"I asked you to leave. You have annoyed me enough."
Her jaw drops. "Evan I -"
"Please leave!"
She snorts, stands and stomps towards door. It swings open just as she is about to reach for the knob.
My servant steps in followed by a huge group of men, women and some teenage girls. They all pile into my office, their curious eyes gazing at every wall.
"She spoke to this group." My servant announces.
Not what I expected. People don't reveal much when speaking to a group of people.
"There isn't a person she spoke to privately?" I ask.
"No, she arrived alone and didn't stay for long." He answers.
I need someone that can tell me everything I need to know about her, every single detail there is to know. It however doesn't look like I am going to get that as fast as I wish.
"You know what? I am going to stay and be quiet if that's what you want." Mother turns away from the door and walks back to her seat. Guess she wouldn't want to miss a single piece of information of course.
I ignore her presence and focus my attention on the group that is supposed to have the answers I need.
"Had anyone of you met my mate before today?" I ask. They all shake their heads.
I sigh in frustration. I only have a bunch of people that she greeted on her way in?
"Does any of you at least know her name?" I ask.
"Hilda." They all answer in unison. Hilda isn't exactly the name I was expecting for someone so uniquely created. But it's good as long as it's my mate's.
"She is a cousin to Talia Abrams sir." The woman in front adds. Mother gasps and glare at her. The woman can hardly stay quiet even when she has promised to do so.
"Who is Talia Abrams?" I ask my group of guests. Everyone hesitates to answer.
"It's the girl that was executed three years ago after she and her family tried to poison you." The same woman answers.
I had my heart throbbing hard before now it pounds hard enough to force it's way up my throat.
I now understand why she ran. She was scared of me, of what I would do if I knew she is related to that family. Or she hates me and was afraid of rejecting me face to face.
I look at my mother but this time she seems too appalled to have answers. And she probably won't say anything helpful since she loathes that family and dislikes hearing anything that reminds her of them.
But having seen and smelled my mate, I know there is no evil that can exist in her. I should find her and help her understand that there is a very justifiable reason why her cousin was executed.
"She wanted to know what slave masters bought her aunt and other cousins, sir." One of the men in the group supplies.
I look at mother as she was the one that had them sold. "Who bought them?"I ask.
She shrugs her shoulders. "I don't remember."
"Excuse me?"
"It's been three years and you know I have a bad memory. I am sorry but I honestly don't remember the names of any of the people that bought them." She says, looking everywhere except at me.
How on earth would she forget who she sold those kids to? It's not like it's a business she does everyday.
"Can you at least remember what soldiers you sent to deliver them?"
She shakes her head. "Do you really think I would remember the names or faced of soldiers? We have so many of them for lords sake!"
Damn! Isn't she useless?
Those are the people that my mate would be most interested in finding. But my young mother's memory is too old to remember where she sold them.
I don't want the woman that tried to kill me to come back here, she probably is dead anyway. I can at however find the kids and show my mate that I am doing something to fix things.
"Thanks all of you for your help." I say to my informants, my servant holds the door open for them as they leave my office.
"Evan I . . . I am so sorry! I hated that family so much that I wanted to forget they ever existed." Mother apologizes.
I can't blame her for hating the woman that tried to kill me after pretending to be her friend for years. She reacted with as much rage as any mother would have.
"I want you to have your mate, but bringing those people back here really scares me." She adds.
"The little kids were innocent and didn't deserve s*****y. I could buy them back if you could at least remember who you sold them to." I correct.
"Sorry." She apologises again. She however sounds like she is just uttering the word and not actually feeling rueful.
"William I need you to get twenty of my soldiers to go out there and search for my mate. Also tell them to report to me any information that they find." I order my servant who is still in my office.
"Wait." Mother stops him from leaving before she turns to me again. "Honey you just became the new King and there is so much that requires your attention. Let me help find your mate so you can focus on everything else." She offers.
"You won't be dedicated enough in finding her. I can't risk having her disappear again." I object.
"I will have hundred men searching for her tomorrow. I will also send messengers to every pack so we learn where her home is. Is that not enough?"
I think for a moment. There is of course a million things waiting for me to handle. My mate is my first priority. But as long as my mother will search for her with as much dedication as she is promising, then I have nothing to worry about.
"Okay. I am depending on you to bring her back here by tomorrow evening." I say and notice that mother looks a little uncomfortable with that.
"I will do my best." She replies and smiles with determination.
