Goodbye, Mother

582 Words
I was sitting in the kitchen, and once again, mom and Aunt Kate were arguing. Mom had seen me and immediate started crying, berating Aunt Kate about my appearance.  'She's too skinny! Look at her! You haven't been feeding my baby! And you have her dressed like a baby prostitute, and what the hell is all this crap plastered on her face?'  Aunt Kate protested, but mom wasn't hearing any of it. Truthfully, I'd lost a lot of weight in the past 5 weeks, but I felt good, and strong. I'd never imagined that I'd be able to run as far or as fast as I had been doing, and I had energy and drive that I'd never felt before. My makeup was not even that heavy, I'd just put on a little foundation to hide the last red remnant of the pimples I'd had before, and a few slicks of mascara. I wore a loose tank top and a pair of skinny jeans with some cute, purple pumps. There was nothing provocative about my outfit, and I'd seen people baring more skin whilst walking out of the church back home.  'She looks beautiful, Celia! Look at her, she looks like a bloody supermodel. You're projecting your own insecurities and jealousy onto the poor girl!'  Mom didn't like that at all. With one hand, she grabbed my luggage. With the other, she grabbed my arm and tugged.'We're leaving!' she barked.  'No!' I growled back, with a force that startled even me. Where had that come from? Mom and Aunt Kate gawped at me, and for a second, mom was lost for words.  'WE ARE GOING' she stated again, emphasizing each word with as much force as she could muster.  I shook my head. 'I'm happy here, and I want some answers before I move from this chair. I want to know why you have something against William Wilk, and why you don't want me to feel beautiful. You've always fed me unhealthy food, discouraged me when I've wanted to exercise, and refused to allow me to wear makeup or have well fitting clothes. WHY mother?! ' She winced at the mention of his name, and again when I addressed her as "mother". I saw a guilty and ashamed look cross her face, which was quickly replaced with anger.  'I do not owe you any type of explanations for anything I do. I am your parent, you are my daughter. I said we are going, and you need to obey me.'  I had always known mom to overreact, but this tone was new to me. I thought for a second, and the spoke, calmly and clearly.  'I don't want to come home with you. I would like to stay with Aunt Kate. I feel at home here, and I don't think you have my best interests at heart.'  She looked at me with disappointment in her eyes.  'Fine.' she said, her voice seething with anger. 'I can't believe you could be so ungrateful for all that I've done for you. All that I've given up for you! When you realize what a mistake you've made, don't expect me to make it easy for you to come back.'  She turn and headed towards the front door. As she pulled it open, Aunt Kate called out 'I promise I'll take good care of her.'  Mom looked back once more, her eyes filled with tears.  'f**k you, Kate.' she said, and slammed the door behind her.
