Chapter Nine It was a strange dream. Marie stood in front of a big red metal door, her hand on the latch. It seemed as if a warning of some kind had been painted on the door, but she couldnt read it. And, since there was nothing else to do, she opened the door and stepped through it. She found herself at the top of what seemed to be an immense staircase that dropped away into impenetrable darkness. Again, there was nothing else to do, so she began descending the stairs. She had to go carefully, because the steps seemed to vary in width and height. She was aware that she was fully dressed, but somehow couldnt make out any details as to what she was wearing.
