CHAPTER SIXThe carriage was bumping very awkwardly over rough ground, perhaps even grass without a track, and she wondered frantically where she was being taken and who was beside her. Even through the thickness of the cloth which covered her down to her knees she was uncomfortably aware of a man sitting there. He had taken his arms from her once he had thrown her down in the carriage, but the mere fact that he was close was frightening to the point where all she wanted to do was to scream. She realised however that this was hopeless, first because she was sensible enough to know that nobody else would hear her, and secondly, it was difficult anyway to breathe because of the thickness of the material in which she was enveloped.
