She thought it was doubtless the first time he had been really puzzled by somebody who came under his command.
She knew too that it was his long experience of leadership when dealing with all sorts and conditions of people which told him that she was not exactly what she appeared to be, although he could find no logical explanation for it.
Because she thought it was a mistake to let him dwell too long on this aspect of her behaviour she said:
“I refuse to worry about it just now, and if you remember we had arranged this afternoon to see if we could catch any fish in the lake as you used to do when you were a boy.
“I had not forgotten, but I thought you had,” the Earl replied.
“Now you are fishing in a different sort of way,”
