Chapter 8:

1430 Words
The child felt heartbroken because of her biological mother. She didn’t know what had happened in her mother’s past, and though she had the ability to investigate, she chose not to. Unless her mother told her directly. It must have been something deeply painful, which is why her mother chose to forget the past. The man her mother loved was definitely not her father, yet he was still her father—why was that? She didn’t want to know either. Perhaps she didn’t care to find out. Maybe she was an illegitimate child. So what? Her mother treated her like a treasure, providing ample protection. For her sake, her mother hadn’t needed a man in all these years. So, she wanted to love her mother even more, to protect her mother even more. She wanted to give her mother all the best things in life. In Rony’s eyes, her mother was the best woman in the world. Optimistic, resilient, smart, beautiful, and clever—her mother was a favorite of the heavens, so God especially favored her. Rony walked up to Cersei and took her hand. In the darkness, Cersei had an air of solitary loneliness. “Mom, your baby will always be by your side.” Cersei was taken aback but smiled. “I know.” “Mom, your baby can satisfy all your wishes. Your baby is a very filial child; no matter what you want, your baby can give it to you.” Cersei suddenly laughed, “I want an aircraft carrier.” Rony calmly replied, “Mom, an aircraft carrier is really child’s play for me. Just wait.” Even though she knew Rony was just teasing her, Cersei still felt uplifted. Rony pursed his lips, a sly glint flashing in his eyes. Mom, your baby has never lied to you. If you want an aircraft carrier, then tomorrow your baby could really give you one. It’s just that I’m afraid you’d be too shocked to handle it. The next Monday, Cersei arrived at WPL for registration, dressed elegantly. Her delicate, refined face was complemented by a red blouse, white pants, and a pair of red high heels from Christian Louboutin. “So beautiful…” “Is she just a pretty face, or does she have real skills?” “Probably just a pretty face…” The entire design department buzzed with gossip like a swarm of bees. Cersei worked swiftly and efficiently, completing all the paperwork needed to secure a contract by the morning. The design department had over thirty people, and Cersei’s team consisted of six members: Yuna, Lenka, Davvis, Harry, Dominic, and herself—three men and three women. Dominic and Harry were engineers, while the others were designers. In the entire international WPL construction team, Cersei was the only person who was both a designer and an engineer. Very few women worked as construction engineers. To Cersei’s surprise, the design director at WPL was Wendy. Tony had arranged a time for their introduction. Cersei couldn’t help but groan inwardly. What a small world, just like the old saying. “You must be Cersei?” Wendy’s sharp voice was almost unsettling, barely disguising her flustered state. Who would have thought that the unkempt woman she met in the supermarket was the renowned Cersei? “Director Wendy, nice to meet you.” Cersei smiled gracefully and generously. Tony asked, “Director Wendy, do you and Ms. Martell know each other?” “We’ve met once.” Wendy quickly regained her composure, swiftly shook hands with Cersei, and also smiled. “Ms. Martell, it seems we’ll have many opportunities to collaborate in the future.” “Indeed, I look forward to learning from you, Director Wendy.” The two exchanged smiles. Wendy’s smile was tinged with mockery. Tony could sense a tense atmosphere. On her first day at work, Cersei was very busy, almost wishing she could be in two places at once. Wendy handed her a large stack of projects, all planned for the next few years at WPL. The way the branch office worked was different from the headquarters, and she needed to familiarize herself with it safely. Everything went smoothly until lunchtime. Yuna invited Cersei to have lunch together, and the two left the WPL building. “You’ve just returned to the country, and it’s your first day at work, so this meal is on me,” Yuna said cheerfully. “Alright.” Cersei was even more straightforward. They both enjoyed spicy food, so they chose a restaurant specializing in Sichuan cuisine. During lunch, Rony called Cersei, reminding her to eat. Her mother was always busy, with meals never on time. “I know, how’s your new school?” “No problem, I’ve already aced everything from elementary to high school.” “You’re so arrogant.” Cersei laughed, gave a few more instructions, and hung up the phone. Rony was a genius child, well beyond any normal level, and Cersei had let him skip straight to elementary school. “Your son is truly a priceless treasure.” Cersei smiled with squinted eyes, “Yes, he’s extremely adorable. By the way, don’t mention this at the company.” “I understand, don’t worry.” Yuna was very curious but also trustworthy. “President Tran isn’t a gossip, and Manager Truong even less so, so no one knows about this.” The food arrived quickly. The two of them ate and chatted happily, quickly bonding. “Why is Wendy the design director of WPL?” Cersei asked. “She’s also a designer, has been with the company for five years, comes from a powerful family. Her father is the mayor, and her fiancé is Alpha Louis. Many of the projects WPL and William collaborate on were brought in by her.” “The government approvals also need her help, which is why she was able to become the general manager.” Cersei understood. In this era, connections and background were very helpful. Unlike her, who had worked her way up step by step from the lowest level, having done everything. “How competent is she?” Yuna couldn’t help but mock, “Her management skills are average, her design ability is also average. She’s won a few big awards, but they were all bought.” “No other way, when your fiancé is a leader in the construction industry…” “But with her background, even if she makes big mistakes, President Tran turns a blind eye.” Cersei smiled but said nothing. Yuna added, “I really don’t mean to badmouth her behind her back, but tell me, who in this White Fang pack doesn’t envy her? Father and future husband are both number one—one a top businessman, the other a top politician.” “She’s really the princess of the White Fang pack.” “So, she’s a princess with many flaws.” “Many people in the design department don’t like her, of course, but there are also many who try to curry favor with her to advance their careers.” “She’s definitely going to mess with you.” Cersei frowned, “Why?” “Your qualifications are the highest in the design department, you were transferred from the headquarters, and most importantly, you’re the youngest and most beautiful in the whole design department.” “It would be strange if she didn’t mess with you.” Cersei, “…” o(╯□╰)o Having high qualifications and being young and beautiful can be obstacles in one’s career? Yuna said, “Everyone says, how can you be so beautiful and so capable?” Cersei calmly replied, “Good genes from my parents.” Yuna, “… Makes sense.” They both laughed. They had a thirty-minute lunch break, and by the time they got back to the company, they were five minutes late. As soon as Cersei and Yuna sat down, Wendy threw a stack of documents onto Cersei’s desk. “Here’s the material you need to review by the end of today,” Wendy said, as if handling routine business. Cersei thought to herself, this woman is definitely trying to mess with her. Who gives out so much work on the first day? Not even giving her a chance to get familiar with the work environment. She didn’t argue, just accepted the stack of documents. Wendy mockingly said, “White Fang pack isn’t New York, so leave your New York habits behind. If you’re late to the office again, I’ll deduct your entire punctuality bonus.”
