The ear-battering batter of a volley of cannon shook the air around them, followed by another, and then another. The infantry marched on, grey coats seemingly constricting, eyes fixed ahead. "We"re entering a battle," Jack shouted above the noise. "From the Russian side." Maxwell flicked the reins again, pulled the droshky aside and headed for the meagre shelter of a dip beside the road.
