Alice Walker's POV
I have learned how dangerous Tessa and her man are in the last 24 hours and I can’t risk my kids’ life. Even when I need the money in the account to start a new life, I have to give it to Tessa to save my kids. Tessa ordered the accountant to take me to the bank and I had to obey her without a word. I silently followed that traitor whose name I remembered to be Wilson Thompson. He led me to his car and I got in the back seat. Tears fell from my eyes, as I thought how happy we were a day back. I looked out of the glass and the car was moving through the familiar roads of New York. Seven wonderful years in this city never allowed me to miss my hometown. Now I will have to leave this place where my beloved is buried. My kids won’t have any memories of their father or motherland.
I looked at the man in the driver seat who cheated my husband for some stacks of currency. Thomas trusted his employees and loved them as his family. He always took care of each of his subordinates and backed them whenever they needed him. If Thomas did know this man’s real face, he would have been deeply hurt.
“Wilson, how could you betray the man who helped you to stand on your feet? You were on the verge of suicide when Thomas helped you and gave you a job in his company. You are a double-headed monster and one day you will pay for your sins.” I said with hatred. He laughed looking at me through the mirror.
“Mrs. Walker, I didn’t do anything that’s illegal. I am a faithful man and I am loyal to my boss. Mr. Thomas Walker was never my boss. Tessa gave me the assignment to sneak into the Walker enterprises and work for her. I was not broken. It was all a drama to convince Thomas to give me a job. So, I don’t have any commitment towards your husband. I am doing my job.” Wilson said with an evil smirk.
“Oh, so this is all being planned years back. You have been in the company for the last six years.” I sighed.
“Yeah, Tessa really is beautiful with brains. After all, she is the mastermind behind everything.” Wilson agreed.
After that, I sat silently watching out of the window. Wilson pulled the car inside the parking lot of a busy building. I identified the building as I did come here before with Thomas. That day, Thomas asked me to sit inside the car itself. He came back after about half an hour and handed me some papers and asked me to sign them. I didn’t question him about the papers and signed them. Now I realize that those papers were for opening an account in the bank. I came out of my trance when Wilson tapped on the glass motioning me to get down. I silently followed him inside the building. Waiting for the elevator, my eyes wandered through the list of names of offices functioning in the building. My eyes stopped at the name of a bank- Imperial Bank, which is on the sixth floor. When the elevator came I stepped inside after Wilson and got down on the sixth floor. Wilson went straight to the transaction counter and asked them about my account. He gave me the account number and my details and asked to transfer the amount to Tessa’s account. The lady behind the desk asked about the account holder and Wilson pushed me in front.
“Madam do you have any identity proof?” She asked.
“No, I haven’t..” Before I could complete my sentence, Wilson gave her my driving license. I wondered from where he got it but then remembered about Tessa invading my home. It must be her who handed over the card to Wilson.
The lady behind the desk took the card and checked my identity. She then checked something on her computer and looked at us. She looked at me and then at Wilson and said.
“Madam, who is the man with you and why do you want to transfer the money all of a sudden to another account?” She asked suspiciously.
“I am her financial consultant and why are you questioning us?” Wilson questioned her.
“I am sorry sir. This account has been inactive for the last two years. We will have to check the details before allowing you to do any transactions. Do you have your passbook madam?” She asked again. I looked at Wilson for an answer and he came with an excuse.
“Well, it’s an account opened by her late husband and she got to know about it recently. She doesn’t know where her husband had kept the bank documents. She needs the money to look after her kids.” Wilson didn’t realize that his words would backfire on him.
“If she is in need of money, then why do you want to transfer the amount to another account? She can apply for a bank card and use it for transactions.” The lady asked and I saw Wilson biting his tongue.
“Okay, then can we please get a statement of the account?” Wilson asked in a humble tone.
“Well, you will have to meet the manager and give a request letter for that. If he approves, we could allow you to transfer the funds.” She replied.
“Then, make an appointment with your manager,” Wilson said.
“Please wait in the lounge area madam. I will go and talk to the manager.” She said and got up from her seat and walked to a room at the left end corner. She knocked on the door and disappeared behind it. We waited in the lounge area for about fifteen minutes. After fifteen minutes, I saw her coming towards us.
“Madam, the manager is waiting for you in his office.” She said pointing towards the manager’s room. Wilson stood up and walked in the front and I followed him after thanking the lady. Wilson knocked on the door and opened it after getting permission. He went to the manager and introduced himself and then pointed towards me and introduced me. I smiled at the manager for some unknown reason. I looked at the nameplate on the table and it read Jacob Wiseman.
“Hello, Mrs. Walker, please take a seat.” The manager stood up from his seat and welcomed me. Wilson sat on one of the chairs before me and I sat beside him.
“How can I help you Mrs. Walker?” the manager asked. Before I could say anything, Wilson blabbered with his filthy mouth about our purpose for coming to the bank. After hearing everything, Mr. Jacob Wiseman looked at Wilson suspiciously.
“Mr. Wilson, can I see your ID?” Mr. Jacob asked.
“Why?” Wilson asked back.
“I believe Mrs. Walker is educated enough to carry out her bank transactions on her own without the help of a financial advisor. I am sorry, but I can’t allow you to be here when she does the transaction. So, please wait outside.” Mr. Jacob’s words gave a blow to Wilson’s intention. He looked at me and whispered.
“Don’t try to be smart or else you can say your farewell to your kids. Just transfer the full amount to Tessa’s account. Her account details are on this paper. After transferring the amount make sure to close your account.” He gave me a piece of paper from his pocket and left the office. I looked at the door and back at the piece of paper in my hand. What should I do? Should I empty my account to fill Tessa’s or should I keep some for myself and my kids? I was fighting within my mind when Mr. Jacob’s words pulled me out of my thoughts.
“Mrs. Walker, are you alright? Please have some water.” He gave me a glass of water. I took it and emptied it in one go. After putting the glass down, I looked at the manager and said,
“Thank you, Mr. Wiseman.”
“You are welcome and please call me Jacob. Thomas was a really good friend of mine and I am sorry for your loss. I know something is bothering you and I am here to help you. Please, tell me your problem.” Jacob’s words gave me hope but again thinking about my kids I remained silent.
“Mrs. Walker, Thomas opened this account two years back because he was afraid that he was being followed. He wanted to make yours and your children’s life safe and that’s why he opened the account and has been depositing money since the last two years. I heard Wilson threatening you to transfer the amount and close the account. So, please tell me what’s happening.” Jacob’s words made me open my mouth and tell him everything that has happened in the last few hours. After hearing everything he asked.
“Should I inform the police?”
“No, I can’t take risks with my children’s life. She is very dangerous and she will not think twice about killing my kids. I just want to save my kids and if that means to give her everything I have, I will.” I said with a sigh.
“I can’t allow that to happen. I won’t allow Thomas’s hard work to go in vain.” I looked at him with new hope.
