Chapter 4 – Out of the Walker Mansion

1831 Words
Alice Walker's POV Back in the car, I heard Wilson calling his boss and reporting that the mission was completed. Now I hope she will leave my children and I could flee with them to safety. I hope she won’t create any more chaos in my life. The entire drive was silent and it took about 40 minutes to reach the mansion. I hopped out of the car before Wilson and ran back to the mansion. But before that, I made sure to keep the visiting card that Jacob gave me, safely inside my bra. Even if Tessa chooses to check me they won’t be able to find the card. I didn’t bother to knock on the door and pushed open it and ran inside. I didn’t find Tessa or her husband in the living room. “Alinda, Toby where are you?” I called my children but no one replied, making me more tense. “Don’t worry my sister-in-law. I haven’t killed your children. I am not that of a b***h to s*******r small ones.” Tessa said while coming down the stairs. “You are worse than that,” I uttered in my mind but didn’t dare to say it out loud before seeing my kids. “Well, I and John were just admiring our new bedroom. You have maintained it well. I am sure mom is going to love her room too. She always dreamed of living in this mansion with my so-called father. She will be delighted to move in with her new boyfriend. I am sure; her boyfriend will be on his knees to marry her once he sees the mansion. I am thinking of posting him in our office.” Tessa told her husband. I was shocked to hear that her mother is still having a boyfriend. “Tessa, I have done as you told me to do. Now give me my children and I will be out of your life forever.” I said. “What’s the hurry, Alice? Wilson told me that you were alone with the bank manager for more than twenty minutes. What were you doing there? Making out with him just after hours of burying your loving husband.” Tessa’s words made me speechless for some time. “I am not a w***e like your mother who sucks whichever d**k she could get. Just hand over my children and leave me alone.” I hissed. “Ahh.. Then explain, ``What were you doing inside that room for twenty minutes?” Tessa asked with a smirk. I covered my nervousness and made out a quick story. “Well, he was really suspicious that I was in some trouble. He wanted to know every single detail of why I wanted to transfer the money to your account and that too within hours of Thomas’ funeral. I tried really hard to convince him that there is nothing suspicious. But he was not ready to believe me. I tried again and again to convince him but he didn’t budge and threatened me to inform the police. That’s when I barked at him and ordered him to do as I say and called Wilson inside.” I said. “Well, that’s a good story but I am not a fool like your late husband to buy anything you say.” Tessa walked towards me and stopped in front of me. She looked into my eyes as if she wanted to pierce through them and get into my mind. I stared back at her without blinking my lashes. “So, I am going to check you out,” she said and started to snake her hands all through my body. My heart skipped a beat when her hands reached my breasts. Thanks to the padded bra I am wearing, she didn’t feel the card inside. She checked all the pockets outside the shirt and pants. “Fine, I will buy your lie. You can take your children and leave. I will give you ten minutes to get out of the gate of the mansion.” Tessa said and motioned her man to bring my kids. “Tessa, I want to take my phone,” I said, pointing towards the side table in the living room. Tessa walked towards the table and took my phone and in the next second, she smashed it on the floor making it shatter into three pieces. I looked at her in shock. Now I won’t be able to call anyone for help, not even a cab. I will have to walk for about fifteen minutes to reach the main road and that too with two kids and four bags. It’s getting dark outside and it will be chilling at night. I gathered my bags and walked out of the mansion. After keeping the bags near the gate, I walked back to get my kids. Alinda and Toby were now in the living room. They came running towards me when they saw me. I hugged them as if I got back my heartbeat. “Come, my dear kiddies, let’s go,” I said while standing up. “Mamma, where are we going and where is daddy? Why hasn’t he come back yet? Who are these people and what are they doing in our house.” My little angel asked innocently. She hasn’t understood that her daddy will never come back. I saw Tessa coming towards us and before she could say anything I said. “Dear, we are moving out to another place. We sold this mansion and now they own the place.” I said and looked at Tessa and turned around and stepped out of the mansion. With each step, I promised myself that I will get revenge for all my losses. I will get the mansion back and I will make each one of them cry. I don’t know when but I will surely come back even if it takes years. I walked out of the gate with two kids and four bags. I had two shoulder bags and two suitcases. I struggled really hard to hold all the bags and two kids. I asked Alinda to hold Toby’s hand while I carried the bags. I was thankful as there were not many vehicles on the road at the time. It was only halfway when Toby started to cry and asked me to carry him. His small legs will be really hurt by walking this far. I sat on the side of the road and made my kids sit on either side of me. I opened one of the bags and rambled inside it to find sweaters and caps for my kids and me. I made my children wear their sweaters and cap first. When I was about to wear my sweater, I noticed a car stopped at a distance from where we were sitting. I recognised the car at once. I saw that car parked outside the mansion. It will probably be Tessa’s men following me. I was thinking of calling Jacob from the coin booth once I reach the bus stop but now it won’t be safe. I thought of a way to get away from Tessa’s men. It’s getting dark and there are no street lights on this road. I have to get to the main road before the daylight goes. I again rummaged inside the bag to find something to tie Toby with myself. I found a shawl long enough to securely tie Toby to my front. With the Help of Alinda, I securely tied Toby to me and again started to walk with the entire luggage. Alinda followed me silently. I knew that her legs were tired but I was really helpless. All through my walk, I was thinking of a way to escape from the men following me. I suddenly remembered a shelter home where I used to go with Thomas whenever we got the opportunity. It’s at a walkable distance from the main road. I know the nun who is in charge of the shelter home. I can seek her help for the night and can call Jacob from there. I increased the speed of my walk and Alinda really struggled to keep up with me. “Mamma, I am tired. Please walk slowly.” She said, “Baby, we have to reach the main road before the sun goes. You have to help your mamma. We will be in danger if we don’t reach the shelter in time.” I said looking at her with pleading eyes. As usual, my princess understood me, and without a word, she followed me. It took me another fifteen minutes to reach the shelter. I glanced backward and saw the car still behind me. I knocked at the door of the shelter. Sister Amelia opened the door and stood startled seeing me and the kids with bags. She opened the door and allowed me inside.   She took me to her room and gave me time to settle myself. Toby had fallen asleep on my shoulders. I laid him down on the single bed in the room. Then I helped Alinda to freshen up. By that time Sister Amelia brought two bowls of soup. “I am sorry Alice, I don’t have anything else right now except for this soup.” “Sister Amelia, you allowed me to spend the night here and that’s the biggest help you can do to me,” I said with teary eyes. “I was there at Thomas’ funeral. I am sorry for your loss. What happened that made you leave your house just after hours of his death.” She asked. “I will explain after I feed Alinda and put her to bed,” I said and she nodded and left the room. I fed Alinda and put her to bed near Toby. She fell asleep as soon as she hit the bed. After some time, sister Amelia came to the room and I explained everything that happened in the last few hours. She was shocked to hear everything. I asked her to make a call to Jacob and she took me to her office. I dialed Jacob’s number from the card. He took the call on the third ring. After hearing everything he asked me to go to his home. He told me that his wife was nine months pregnant and there was no one else at home. So, he asked me to reach his place on my own. I thought it was safer because if Tessa’s men saw Jacob at the shelter, they would become suspicious. I discussed it with Sister Amelia and she offered to help me escape to Jacob’s house without being noticed by Tessa’s men. She asked me to adjust for the night in her room and put a bed on the floor for me. I laid down and tried to sleep but I knew I couldn't before I reached a safe place.
