Misunderstanding

I looked up to see a big man scowling at me. He was really tall and I was like almost half his height. He tilted his head at me with a curious expression forming on his face. “Why aren’t you running?” Oh. Why wasn’t I running? I didn’t wait another second before bolting past him. In an instant, he had disappeared from his former position and appeared in front of me, making me almost bump my head into him again. That speed… My jaw dropped in shock. “I caught the intruder!” He announced at the top of his voice and when I heard the rushed footsteps that followed, I knew I needed to escape. These people could be hunters even. I changed directions once again, running to my left, opposite to where the footsteps sounded from. He didn’t stop me like I thought he would. He didn’t even move an inch but that didn’t make me relax, instead I grew worried. I felt his speed just now when he appeared before me. It was nothing like I had ever seen. It wasn’t ordinary at all. He wasn’t chasing me because he knew how easily he could catch me. Except that was wrong too and it was because he knew I was walking right into a trap. It was too late before I realized it. I stepped on a normal looking soil, but immediately, something had sprung out from it and caught my leg and I was instantly raised up in the air where I was hanged upside down on the branch of a tree. “Where is she?” The footsteps got closer to me, and I cursed furiously, trying to steal a look through the bunch of hair that now covered my vision. That man, along with his people. Three of them. They strolled to my position. One of them was really short and about my height if not shorter. He looked funny with a part of his front hair covering his face which made him look silly. He laughed, coming closer to take a good look at me. “Freddy, don’t you think she looks like one of your antelopes grilling on a stake?” “Shut up, Benny.” The other one who was taller came forward to push him away but he didn’t budge. “Look. She’s even glaring at me.” “Well, she didn’t expect to be caught so soon.” I looked at the one who spoke. The big, tall man who had a broody air around him. He was leaning on a tree, cracking some nuts and looking completely uninterested in what the other two were doing but I could tell his attention still remained. It remained precisely on me. I don’t know if he was just being vigilant, but I noticed how he was watching me closely even thought it might seem like he wasn’t to others. I tried the ropes binding my legs first but it only swinged me forward which caused me to almost bang my head on another tree which I swiftly avoided on time while hearing the laughter of the shorty who had been called Benny. The broody man came forward while I was still swinging side by side, feeling like the earth should swallow me whole. I hadn’t been in such a humiliating position after leaving my abusive relatives years ago. His eyes met mine before he stopped his footsteps and asked. “So you’re the rogue wolf who has been killing off children?” Rogue wolf? Children? A puzzled look entered my face. What was he talking about? Did he have me mixed up with someone else? “Don’t you recognize me?” I might not longer be Luna of the red lake but when I was, even the people outside the pack house would’ve either heard of me or seen me once or twice at least. “Am I supposed to recognize a child-eating monster?” he drawled out the words slowly, his eyes narrowing dangerously on me. And then it suddenly dawned upon me. The girl I had seen earlier covered in blood from head to toe was the girl they were looking for. She was a rogue too. Probably one who had gone wild. “I think you’ve gotten it all wrong. I’m not the person you’re looking for." I tried to explain only for him to push me which caused me to swing again. “Are you f*****g serious?! I just told you I’m not the person you’re looking for!” I yelled in both frustration and anger, trying hard to swing myself back so I don’t bump my face on a tree. When I came back to my earlier position still hanging upside down, the big man’s lips curled up wickedly. “Ready to talk?” He doesn’t believe me. Nothing I say would make him believe me unless I prove it. “Well, go f**k yourself!” I spat and his smirk only grew wider before he’s pushing me again, his expression telling me he was having the time of his life playing me around like this. I wasn’t too lucky this time around. I tried hard to avoid the tree that suddenly entered my vision, but it was too late. I felt the banging pain reverberating in my head before I blacked out completely. When I woke up again, I was no longer hung on the tree. The rotten stench of flesh had me crunching up my nose as I sat up, my heart picking up at the unfamiliar surroundings. I was inside what looked like a cell. It smelled terribly that I had to hold in my breath completely. “Sage, what is this place?” Silence. Like I half expected. Yeah. She was still mad at me. But it shouldn’t be at a time like this when we were supposed to be working together. Where did those people bring me to? What if they truly believed I was the child eating monster and kill me? What if they give me no chance at all to even prove myself? Oh goddess, what have I gotten myself into? Why do I have a series of bad lucks from yesterday alone? “You’re awake?” I looked around instantly when I heard that voice except, I couldn’t find anyone around. Except that the voice sounded right inside my cell. It was the shortie from earlier. Benny if I recall correctly. He was wrapped in gauze from head to toe along with his nose. I guess the stench had been too much for him to. How could they put a breathing person in a place like this if they were not animals? “Why are you also locked up?” “Did you think we were going to leave you alone?” he scoffed. “The last rogue managed to escape by digging out the ground like a damn squirrel. I’m here to stop you in case you also have that kind plan of escaping.” “I told you I’m not who you’re looking for. Now if you had a goddamn brain, you’d have actually checked and confirmed my identity first.” “Rogues don’t have identities idiot.” He fired back, leaving me speechless. “Or do you also want to say you’re not a rogue?” he came forward with a scary looking whip in his hand. “Look woman, as you’ve already seen, lying won’t get you anywhere so you better start confessing. Who ordered you to eat those children?” “I think you’re the dumb one here.” I threw him a glare and crossed my arms. “My name is Madeline Greywood. I am the Luna to the Red lake Pack. Your Luna. Or perhaps former Luna.” I added the last part hesitantly. Benny looked at me unblinkingly for a few seconds before he stifled a laugh then he stretched his hands towards me. “My name is Skylar Howard, Alpha to the Red lake pack. I am your husband and Alpha.” I looked at his outstretched hands and the frustration kicked in again. He didn’t believe me. Not that I thought he would so easily but it should’ve made him go ahead to do the investigations right? Why was he so slow? “She’s already awake? That was fast.” I heard footsteps and the other one I thought was taller and at least more reasonable, Fred, entered along with a couple of different looking guards behind him. Different because they didn’t carry the Red flame emblem on their shoulder but a different pack’s own. “She’s refusing to talk and claiming to be some Luna of some Red Lake pack!” “Isn’t that our neighboring pack?” the taller one spoke. I think I heard Benny call him Fred. I wasn’t within the Red Lake territories, and this was some neighboring pack?! I couldn’t think of any one that wasn’t the Ember pack who shared a border with us. “Well, I brought some guards. The Alpha wants her to be taken to the torture chamber.” “Now, isn’t that nice?” Benny looked at me and gloated before he roughly started to push me towards the door. “Careful with her. She’s fast and strong. We wouldn’t have been able to catch her if Dylan hadn’t offered his help.” “She’d die under my knife if she tried anything.” The shortie patted his sides and his expression froze before he was looking at me. I gave him a small smile before bringing out the dagger I had stolen from him just now. My movements were quick as I lunged towards him, aiming straight for his heart, for his life. I usually never miss. I was only stunned when the shortie suddenly disappeared from his earlier position and I cut through air instead, making me feel like an i***t. The shortie was suddenly behind me, his other dagger which I didn’t know he had on pressing coolly and dangerously to my neck. “Think you got some moves, girl.” I remained still, not even daring to talk back because that would mean submitting myself to death. It was a wolfbane coated dagger for goodness sake. How did these people manage to get their hands on something like this? Fred looked at us for a minute before he shook his head. “Do what you need to do with her, Benny. But don’t kill her before you bring her to the torture room.” He was just about to leave when his eyes seemed to have caught something in front and he staggered back. Footsteps followed. I could also feel the air freezing as they neared and Fred continued to back away like he was seeing a ghost. “Hands off her, Benny.” Said the ghost—I mean an unfamiliar looking yet strikingly handsome man. Once my eyes met with his, I couldn’t seem to look away. It was as though a spell was casted on me and I could only look at him-I could only see him. “But Alpha, she is-" “If you let me repeat myself, Benny, you’ll be losing those hands.” His eyes dangerously narrowed in on the shortie who hesitantly let me go. Once the dagger was out of my neck, I took in a deep breath. “Open the door.” The man ordered, glancing at fred who hurriedly and shakily fumbled with the locks before he managed to get it right at last. The man pulled it open with force before he entered. My heart rate picked up with every step he took closer to me, and when I looked up at him and my eyes took in his closely, I almost forgot to breath as my wolf whispered the thing I already knew we were. “Mate!” My mate. This must be a dream. A f*****g dream. There’s no way I’d find my mate after so many years. So many years of waiting and searching. And even after I had been married, I still secretly waited for this day. For this moment where the rest of the world would disappear and I’d be able to see just him. He stopped right in front of me, eyes burning, piercing right into me, and I could almost predict what he was going to say next. Mate. Mine. Except he didn’t say any of those things but instead started off by giving me a shocking surprise.
