Chapter One
I am at the High School, helping my sister set up for the Decade Dance.
Allison: “Seriously, Caroline, what made you think the 60s would be a good idea for the Decade Dance?”
She playfully hits my shoulder.
Caroline: “Shut up. As head of the dance committee, I thought it would be fun. Everyone always picks the 70s and 80s.”
Allison: “Fair enough. However, I think the 20s would’ve been a cool idea. All of the elegance and jazz would’ve been fun to see.”
Caroline: “Well, we are doing the 60s, and it's too late to change that. Hand me that piece over there.”
She points out the decoration, and as I hand it to her, my phone vibrates in my pocket. I pull it out to see a text from Bonnie telling me to meet her and the others at the Salvatore house. Klaus has made his first move here at school.
Caroline: “Hey, why do you look worried? Did something happen?”
Allison: “No, nothing happened yet. Bonnie just needs to talk about something.”
Caroline: “Oh, why didn’t she text me?”
Allison: “I’m sure it’s nothing too serious. Otherwise, she would have texted you.”
Caroline: “You’re right. Just let me know if anything happens, okay.”
Allison: “Of course, Care. Text me if you need me. And don’t stress too much about the dance.”
Caroline: “Wow, look who’s talking.”
We laugh before I leave to meet Bonnie and the others.
We are waiting for Alaric's arrival, but Elena and Bonnie told us what happened.
Damon: “So we go to the dance, we find him.”
Stefan: “Really? How are we going to do that? We don’t even know what he looks like.”
Damon: “Something tells me he’s not going to be sixteen and pimply.”
Stefan: “He could be anywhere at any time. He compelled somebody at school. I guess it’s not as safe as you thought, huh?”
Allison: “When has that school ever truly been safe?”
There’s a knock at the door as it opens to reveal Alaric.
Damon: “There you are.”
Alaric: “Sorry I’m late.”
Damon: “Hey, I need you to put me down as a chaperone at the dance tonight. Klaus made his first move.”
Allison: “Caroline already signed me up.”
Alaric nods as he joins us.
Elena: “Okay, so we find him, and then what, hm? What’s our plan of attack?”
Bonnie: “Me. I’m the plan. He has no idea how much power I can channel. If you can find him, I can kill him.”
Alaric: “That’s not going to be that easy. I mean, he is the biggest, baddest vampire around.”
Damon: “Alaric has a point. I mean, what if he-”
Damon vamp-speeds toward Bonnie, and she uses her powers immediately, causing him to be thrown back, crashing into the table and the floor.
Stefan: “Well, I was impressed.”
Allison: “Yes, however, that’s just Damon. He’s not an original.”
Bonnie: “It doesn’t matter if he’s an original. I can take down anyone who comes at me. I can kill him, Elena. I know I can.”
Elena: “I trust you, Bonnie.”
Allison: “I guess we just send Bonnie then. I’ll meet you guys there.”
Alaric: “I’ll walk you out.”
Alaric and I leave at the same time.
When I get to the dance, in my red knee-length halter dress with white polkadots all over it, I realize I am the first of our group to arrive. I am scanning the crowd for anyone who could be Klaus and jump in surprise when a hand lands on my shoulder. I see it belongs to Alaric, and he is struggling not to laugh.
Allison: “God, Alaric, don’t do that.”
Alaric: “My apologies, Allison. I didn’t mean to frighten you.”
Allison: “Have you been able to spot him yet? I can’t seem to find him.”
Alaric: “No, unfortunately. But the night is still young. Looks like the others have just arrived.”
I see our friends walk in as he says that. When the song ends, Dana walks up to the mic.
Dana: “Thanks for being here, everybody.[Crowd cheers and applauses] We have a special shout-out tonight. This is for Allison, from Klaus.”
The crowd cheers again as the song starts. Alaric holds out a hand to me.
Alaric: “Since we are here, may I have this dance?”
Allison: “Sure, why not? I'm definitely not going to take his bait.”
I take his hand, and we dance to This is Dedicated to the One I Love by The Mamas and the Papas till Damon walks over to us.
Alaric: “Special dedication, huh? This guy’s a little twisted.”
Damon: “I’m not impressed.”
Alaric: “No?”
Allison: “I don't think it's a coincidence it happened when we are finally all here.”
Damon: “Agreed. Watch yourself, Allison. Let me know if you see anything out of whack.”
Alaric: “Oh.”
Allison: “Of course.”
Damon walks away. My sister walks in with Matt.
Alaric: “You look lovely, Allison.”
Allison: “Thanks, you don’t look so bad yourself, Ric. However, I would like to know why he dedicated the song to me and not Elena."
Alaric: "We should worry about that later and just enjoy the dance for now."
I nod, following his lead while we dance a little longer before I have to take care of my chaperone duties. Eventually, Elena finds me.
Elena: “Allison, where’s Stefan? I need to find him.”
Allison: “Elena, slow down. What’s happening?”
Elena: “It’s Klaus, he’s in Alaric’s body. He’s trying to kill Bonnie.”
Part of me starts to panic because of the realization of who I danced with. Stefan finds us, and I guard the door to ensure no one discovers what is happening while they go after Klaus. After a little while, Stefan comes to get me.
Stefan: “It’s over. Damon said he needs your help outside. It’s Bonnie.”
I can tell he is upset as he takes a crying Elena out of the school. I find Damon shutting the trunk of his car with Jeremy.
Allison: “Hey, what happened to Bonnie?”
Damon: “She couldn’t kill Klaus, but we got the next best thing. I’ll fill you in later.”
Allison: “Alright, I’ll meet you at your place. I can’t believe I danced with Klaus and had no idea.”
Damon: “It’s alright; none of us knew till he revealed himself.”
Allison: “I should’ve known, though.”
I get in my car and go to the Salvatore boarding house. I comfort an upset Elena until Damon arrives and reveals Bonnie is alive.
Two days later, I am working when I receive a text from Damon. Klaus released Alaric; he wants me to meet him and Alaric at the Grill. I finish my work and go to the Mystic Grill, where I find them drinking and Damon sulking.
Damon: “I screwed up.”
Alaric: “Yeah, yeah, you did.”
Allison: “At least you two get to do something. All I ever get to do is collateral damage control.”
I drink a shot of bourbon as I sit on Alaric’s right, and Damon is seated on Alaric’s left.
?: “Gentlemen, Allison, why so glum?”
We turn to our left to see a man standing there.
Damon: “Ugh, Klaus, I presume.”
Klaus: “In the flesh. Thanks for the loaner, mate. And the dance, love.”
We glare at him.
Damon: “Any reason you stopped by to say hi?”
Klaus: “I'm told you and your brother fancy my doppelganger. Just thought I’d remind you not to do anything you’ll regret.”
Damon: “[Sarcastic laugh] Thanks for the advice. I don’t suppose I could talk you into a postponement by any chance, huh?”
Klaus: “You are kidding.[Looks at us] He is kidding, right?”
Allison: “I don’t think so.”
Alaric: “No, not really.”
Damon: “I mean, come on, what’s one month in the whole grand scheme of things?”
Klaus: “Let me be clear; I have my vampire. I have my werewolf. I have everything I need. The ritual will happen tonight. So if you want to live to see tomorrow, don’t screw it up.”
Klaus goes to walk away, but just before he does, he looks my way.
Klaus: “I’ll see you later, Allison.”
I give him a confused look, and he just walks away.
Allison: “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Damon sits down.
Alaric: “No idea, but it can’t be good.”
Damon: “That was fun.”
Alaric: “You’re gonna screw it up, aren’t you?”
Damon: “You think if I took his werewolf out of the equation, she might… get over the fact I tried to turn her into a vampire?”
Alaric: “I think it won’t matter because you’ll be dead.”
Damon: “But without the werewolf, he can’t perform the ritual tonight, which means I would have bought her one month before the next full moon.”
Allison: “But you’ll still be dead.”
Damon: “Are you gonna help me or what?”
Alaric: “What do you want me to do?”
Allison: “I’ll help.”
Alaric: “No, you’ll stay in the safe house now that we know he wants to see you again.”
Allison: “No way. I’m not staying put while you two go off to do some crazy stuff without me. What’s the harm in me staying with you?”
Damon: “If we’re too worried about you, we can’t very well make sure we get the job done.”
Allison: “Ugh, fine. I’ll go to my house. I have an event to organize. Fill me in on whatever happens.”
Damon: “Deal.”
We take a shot together and then go our separate ways. A few hours later, Alaric arrives at my door.
Alaric: “Hey, come on, we have to go.”
Allison: “Go where? What happened?”
Alaric: “Klaus took Tyler and Caroline for the werewolf and vampire to sacrifice in the ritual.”
Allison: “Are you serious? I have to save them. He can’t take my sister. I won’t let him sacrifice my little sister.”
I go to my room to get my vampire weapons, with Alaric following me.
Alaric: “You don't need to worry about Caroline. Damon went to save her. For now, I just need you to come with me to where Bonnie is.”
Allison: “No, I need to go help my sister.”
I put a wooden stake in each of my boots and hide a couple under my shirt. I go to walk past him as I hide a pistol full of wooden bullets in my jacket pocket, and he grabs my arm.
Alaric: “I can’t let you. I promise Damon is going to save Caroline. He will do it because he thinks by saving her, he is buying Elena another month.”
Allison: “Alright, fine. Take me to Bonnie.”
