Eight: Elijah
“Hey man, I’m really sorry if I offended you by what I said.” I finally close my mouth as I look at Chad. His words were racing around in my head as suddenly Char elbows him hard in his side. “Of course, he is offended. F*ck dude you called him a name that reflects on a s****l preference that is degrading when he is not one.” I look over at Char as she is glaring at Chad. “Oh yeah, and how would you know? Huh?” I watch as the two argue and hear Char say. “Oh, believe me. Us she-wolves know.” As I hear Leo beside me. “You haven’t had your first shift yet have you?”
Looking at Leo and he must have seen the answer written all over my face. I sigh looking down at my hands as I whisper out one word that is my complete undoing. “Tomorrow Night.” I say as the whole table get quiet. “What the hell are you doing here then. You should be home until after your first shift. What dumb ass sent you here before you’ve had your first shift?” Chad says shock evident on his face as he is staring at me.
“That’s easy, his father. You know the King of Alpha’s.” I hear the sarcasm in Char’s voice as I look at her and see the pissed off expression on her face. “His parents are worst than our own Alpha and Luna.” Char continues as I hear a low growl coming from Chad making Char lower her head, shutting her mouth. “You will not talk about my parents like that regardless of your personal feelings. Understand.” Leo says with finality in his voice as both of them say “Yes, Alpha.” At the same time.
“Now Elijah, are they due to come tomorrow for your shift?” Leo asks as I feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end as everyone at the table is looking at me. “No, I will be by myself.” The three of them gasp as I feel my face turn red. “Don’t worry I will be fine.” I say nodding my head with conviction. “But you are a Royal….” Char says as I see her looking from me to Leo. “Leo, we have to help him.” I’m surprised when Chad says this. He doesn’t seem like the caring type of person.
“I will be fine. Don’t worry about me.” I hear Leo chuckle at my words as he looks over at me with a smile lighting his eyes. “You do know that tomorrow night is the full moon right. With you being a Royal it is going to be ten times worst for you.” I start to think of my family’s secret as I think about his words. The truth is, the Royal’s suffer more because of our Lycan. Having two different spirits, instead of one. That is why we feel so much more pain than any other wolf out there. Only a handful of trusted wolves know that we have Lycan’s. Hopefully, mine will wake up tomorrow night.
“No, we will go with you. It will be easier having other wolves to help you shoulder the pain.” Leo says as Char and Chad agree with him. For some reason I bow my head as my eyes fill with tears. Here I am, my parents ship me off to Alpha training totally forgetting about my coming of age. Then these wolves who don’t know me at all, but still have taken me under their wing. For some reason they make me feel like I’m apart of there group.
As we eat, I watch how they all easily get along with each other. Which is common for wolves who grow up together as I suspect that they have done. It makes me wonder about my own friends back home. Especially Corbin. “Hey, have any of you guys met your mates yet?” I ask as the table once again becomes quiet.
“I haven’t met my mate yet. It has been a year since I had my coming of age.” Chad side hugs her as he looks at me. “I also haven’t met my mate but can wait. I want to have lots of fun until I me her or him.” He winks at me as a shiver works its way up my spin. “Her or him?” I say as he smiles. “Absolutely, I like both sides of the spectrum.” I hear Leo’s deep laugh as my face must have shown the horror of him winking at me. “Don’t worry about Chad. He is just teasing you.” I gulp looking at Leo.
“Hey, Leo met his mate on our break.” Char says as she smiles at her Alpha. “Yeah?” I ask, looking at Leo as he gets this dreamy look on his face. “Yeah, Leah is the best she-wolf I have ever seen.” I smile at the look on his face. “Can I ask what it feels like?” Leo looks at me and a frown forms on his face. “Your parents must really be a piece of work.” Leo says as I look down at my plate once more. Almost faceplanting into it as he slaps my shoulder.
“It’s the best feeling in the world. The first time you smell her or his scent. The first time you look into their eyes. If feels like your life finally makes sense. Like you are looking and smelling you’re forever. That very first touch makes you giddy. Then the mating and marking, completes you.” The way he describes it all I can see is Corbin in my mind’s eyes. Doing all those things with her and only her. “Did you know her before?”
He sighs as he gets this far away look. “Yeah, we knew each other growing up. We were never very close. Have very different opinions. Makes things interesting. If you know what I mean.” He looks at me wiggling his eyebrows up and down. I cannot hold back the laugh that leave me as everyone else joins in.
