CYRENIA
Kylian’s eyes met mine. He had known someone was in his brother’s office, but his wide eyes told me he hadn’t expected to find me.
“What are you doing here?” His voice was gruff and demanding.
I calmed my heart, grateful it was just Kylian. He was going to be easier to manipulate than his brother. “I was thirsty, so I thought I would look for a glass of water.”
“In my brother’s desk drawer?”
Shit. I kept my face still. It wasn’t too late to lie my way out of this mess. “The door was unlocked, and I’ll admit I got a little curious. I saw the list of participants for the Celestial trials, and I wanted to understand why there was only one woman on the list.” Half-truths were always more successful than half lies.
“Do you really think I’m that naive?”
I watched his eyes closely, looking for any sign that he was linking his brother to inform him about finding me in his office. If I needed to, I could incapacitate Kylian and slip out of the office.
Or you could kill him now, Xia purred.
I ignored my wolf. Killing the brother of the alpha would get messy fast, even though I had fantasized about getting revenge on the man who rejected me. “I don’t really know what to think of you. I know nothing about you, other than you’re not a great host.” He wasn’t believing my lies, but maybe I could distract him. I stepped around to the front of the desk and crossed my arms, emphasizing my breasts.
Kylian’s eyes flicked down to my chest. His gaze narrowed onto my hardened n*****s, and I saw a flash of desire in his eyes. He cleared his throat and forced himself to look at my face again. “Have we met before?”
Out of all the things he could’ve said at that moment, that wasn’t what I had expected. I couldn’t show the shock on my face, though. I tilted my head to the side. “I doubt it. I have never been to the western territories before. Unless you’ve been to the eastern territories, then I don’t know how that’d be possible.”
“I haven’t,” Kylian confirmed, but his gaze intensified, and I felt like he could see straight through my soul.
“Then there’s no way we could’ve met.” Another lie, but there was no way he could see through it. If I still had Alana as my wolf companion, then his recognition would’ve made sense, but she was long gone.
Kylian stalked forward, closing the distance between us. I stepped back, but my butt pressed against the wooden desk, stopping me from moving any further. He didn’t stop moving until he was standing directly in front of me. The scent of apples and cinnamon filled my nose, clouding my thoughts. It was stupid to prolong the conversation, but curiosity got the best of me. Why hadn’t he linked anyone yet?
“I suppose I would’ve remembered meeting someone like you before.” He leaned forward and pressed his hands on the desk.
I leaned back, trying to keep space between us, but there were only a few inches separating our bodies. His leg pressed between my legs, causing my silk slip to slide up my legs, revealing more of my thighs than intended. My tattoo of a dripping coy fish on my upper thigh peeked out from under my clothes, but thankfully Kylian’s eyes were on mine. I shifted, trying to hide the tattoo, but the only thing that did was cause my core to rub against his thigh.
“What are you doing?” I whispered. A new surge of adrenaline pumped through my veins. I needed to get out of the office and back to Myles, but something inside of me didn’t want to.
“I’m trying to figure out who you are exactly, because I know you’re lying about something.” Kylian licked his lips, pulling my attention to them. My heart thumped harder, but it was different from the panic. It was filled with desire for a man I hated with every cell of my body.
“You should take a step back. I am engaged to Alpha Myles. I’m his fated mate.” My voice was breathy, and my core pulsed against his thigh. I had never wanted a man to touch me more than I wanted Kylian. It was confusing and infuriating, and I knew I needed to get out of the situation as soon as possible, yet my body was frozen.
Kylian tilted his head and studied my face. “Are you?”
My jaw tightened as rage replaced every other sensation. I pressed my hands against Kylian’s chest, but he didn’t budge. I could’ve pushed hard, but I was distracted by the muscles beneath my fingertips. “Of course, I am, and he's going to be furious once he hears about this.”
“Hears about you breaking into my brother’s office?” Kylian leaned forward, and his lips brushed against my ear. “I know you’re lying about something, and I’m determined to find out what. I may not know who you are, but there is something you should know about me. I have worked too hard to help this pack. Like hell, I’m going to let a stranger like you destroy everything I have worked hard for. Whatever you’re planning, stop now.”
“I’m not planning anything.” My fingers curled against his muscular chest. Even through his shirt, I felt just how hard his muscles were, and all I wanted to do was keep touching him.
Kylian nipped my earlobe, making me squeak and squirm beneath him. “Lie to me all you want, but I’m going to be watching your every move. If you’re planning on hurting anyone in this pack, I will stop you.”
His threat brought back my senses. I slammed my knee between his legs and shoved him away from me. I rushed to the door, knowing I had to get away from him as soon as possible to clear my head. I grabbed the door and yanked it open, but then I paused. I glanced at him over my shoulder, and his eyes were burning into me. “You have the wrong idea about me.”
I ran back to my room as fast as I could, cursing myself under my breath with each step. Everything was ruined. The moment Kylian told Roman I was rifling through his desk, we would never gain the alpha’s trust. I slipped into our room and glanced over at Myles. He was passed out on the bed, his legs splayed across the queen-sized mattress. I sat in the armchair and tucked my legs into myself before looking at the sticky note. It wasn’t much to go off, but I hoped it was what I needed, because it was the only lead I managed to get, and I didn’t want my little escapade to go to waste.

KYLIAN
I watched Cyrenia flee the office, and I knew I should’ve gone straight to my brother to warn him about his guests. Instead, I found myself trying to convince myself not to go after her, even with the pain she inflicted on me.
She’s not our mate, Calhoun muttered.
I know, but she’s…something. I was even more confused now than I was before. I knew there was something strange about Cyrenia, and finding her in Roman's office was proof enough that she wasn’t trustworthy. However, I didn’t understand my inexplicable desire to shove my tongue in her mouth and take her as my own. There was only one person who had ever elicited those kinds of feelings from me before, but my stupid, younger self-made sure I would never see her again.
There was only one reason I could think of for my uncontrollable desire for this strange woman. She was my second chance mate. Only that didn’t make sense either. Calhoun would’ve known if she was my second chance mate. Besides, Cyrenia was mated to Alpha Myles, one of the most powerful alphas in the world. Even if they weren’t fated mates, Cyrenia was engaged to him. If I upset our guest alpha by trying to claim his mate, it’d cause problems for the entire pack, not just me.
I needed to get those feelings under control before it was too late. I may have already been too late. If Cyrenia told Alpha Myles about the way I touched her, it’d ruin everything.
