CYRENIA
I laughed as my body hit the bed. My body felt light with a joy I hadn’t felt in a long time. I couldn’t stop imagining the look on Roman’s face when I had smacked.
“I’m not sure if you should be celebrating right now,” Myles said, shaking his head. “Alpha Roman could have kicked us out for insulting him like that.”
I rolled my eyes. “He is desperate for an alliance with you, the strongest alpha in the eastern territories. Even if he doesn’t like me, he’ll put up with me for the chance to get on your good side. He let it go, didn’t he?” I rolled over on the bed, lying on my stomach. “Besides, I couldn’t let those warriors harass that girl. She did nothing wrong.”
“Don’t put your shoes on the bed.” Myles grabbed my feet and practically ripped my heels off.
“Oh, come on. Don’t be mad. Wasn’t it just beautiful seeing that stunned look on his face?” I giggled, thinking back on it. Slapping Roman across the facing was more freeing than I had ever imagined. I put on my best mocking voice and said, “Your mate needs to be controlled. She hit my most promising warrior, Crason. He’s the one to watch in the Celestial Trials. And then you said—”
“I was there. I know exactly how it went down.”
“You’re grumpy.” It wasn’t hard to read Myles. He hadn’t said he was upset with me, but I could tell. His grunted response only confirmed my suspicions. “You can’t say it wasn’t satisfying to see that shocked look on Roman’s face.”
Myles was considered the strongest alpha in the eastern territories. It wasn’t because of his perfect muscles, either. He showed kindness and compassion where needed, and he put other alphas in their place when they got out of hand. If we were back home, he wouldn’t have hesitated to teach Roman a lesson.
Myles' stoic expression cracked and he finally flashed his brilliant smile. “Okay, it was pretty satisfying. I don’t think anyone has ever stood up to that man.” He started unbuttoning his shirt, revealing his toned muscles. He worked hard to keep his body in perfect physique.
I grabbed a pillow off the bed and threw it at him. “What are you doing?”
Myles batted the pillow away and raised an eyebrow at me. “I’m changing for bed. Did you want me to stay in these clothes while we sleep together?”
This time it was my turn to raise my eyebrows. “We are not sleeping in the same bed. You can sleep on the floor.” Despite the persona we adopted for our mission, Myles and I were just friends. We always had been, and nothing about that would change, especially with Myles’ interest in the male gender.
“Yeah, that’s not happening. If you’re going to be fickle, you can take the floor.” Myles shucked his shirt onto the armchair in the corner of the guest room.
“I’m not sleeping on the floor.” After several days of traveling and then touring the pack all day, I wanted a good night’s sleep. “Why don’t you act like a gentleman and give me the bed?”
Myles stalked over me. He jumped onto the bed and landed next to me. “There are two problems with that.” He held up his pointer finger. “First of all, aren’t you fighting for gender equality and all of that? Me suffering to make you more comfortable would go against your own beliefs. Two—” He held up a second finger. “You’d have to be a lady for me to act like a gentleman.”
I smacked Myles in the shoulder. “Jackass.”
Myles chuckled, pleased by my reaction. “What’s the big deal about sharing a bed, Cy? Are you worried you’re not going to be able to resist my good body?”
I let out a sharp laugh. “Like that would ever be an issue.”
Myles suddenly rolled over, pinning his hands on either side of my head. He dipped his head down, and his scent of rose and ocean air swirled around my face. “You don’t have to fight against it. I know you find me attractive.” He leaned forward a little more, brushing his nose against mine in the process. “I’m good in bed, too. Just ask Lance.”
I knew Myles was just messing with me, but my heart pounded from the close contact. I had only been intimate with a man once before, and the experience was less than appealing. After the incident with Roman, I hadn’t been interested in physical contact.
“Haha, very funny.” I slipped out from underneath my friend, not wanting him to pick up on the heat rising to my cheeks. Even though I wasn’t interested in a relationship, Myles was still one of the most attractive men I knew, and he was nice to look at. “You can take the bed tonight. I probably won’t sleep much anyway.” I crossed the room and riffled through my bag, looking for a change of clothes. As much as I needed proper sleep, adrenaline lined my veins, and I knew I wouldn’t be able to sit still for a while.
“And what will you be doing exactly?”
“I will be looking for information. We have to find out who all of their alliances are if we want to destroy them. Roman and Violet weren’t as talkative as I had hoped.” I quickly changed my clothes, not bothering to hide my body from Myles. Despite messing with him earlier, I had no shame in front of him. We had been naked around each other plenty of times before. It was natural in the werewolf community. I put on a red silk slip and tossed my hair in a bun on top of my head, adding in extra pins.
“You’re going to look for information looking like that?” Myles questioned. He shifted to the side of the bed. His forehead wrinkled with worry lines, and I knew he didn’t like my plan by his tone alone.
I shrugged. “If I get caught, I can pretend I was trying to get a glass of water and got lost. Wearing a nightie will help sell the bit.”
“And when they wonder why you’re nowhere near the kitchen?”
I clasped my hands in front of me, intentionally squeezing my chest together. “Then I’ll just do this, and hopefully they’ll be distracted by my body and not question the logistics of my statement.”
“Maybe you should just stay here tonight,” Myles said. “We just got here. We have time to get the information we need. I’m sure once I get some one-on-one man time with Roman, he’ll start to brag about his accomplishments and let things slip through the cracks.”
“I’m sure he will,” I agreed. “However, he’s smart. He’s not going to tell you the worst things he’s done. His office is sure to have information about his alliances. The sooner we have that, the sooner you can start waving your magic wand to destroy said alliances.”
Myles stood up and started walking towards me. “Cy…” He didn’t like my plan, but I wasn’t interested in letting him try to talk me out of it.
I lifted my hand. “Get rest. I’ll be fine. I’m going to be careful.”
“Just don’t go around slapping any other alphas,” Myles said.
I stuck my tongue out at my friend before slipping out of the room. It was late, which made the pack house unusually quiet. I stepped carefully with my bare feet, keeping my movements as silent as possible.
The guest room was on the second floor of the pack house, and I knew the alpha’s office was on the top floor. I hoped most of the residents were tucked into bed—just as I should’ve been. That wasn’t going to stop me tonight, though.
As I approached the stairway, voices echoed from the first floor of the pack house, and I crouched down, peering through the banister blocking off the ledge at the top of the stairs. Two male warriors walked through the pack house, whispering to each other.
“Did you hear about the alpha from the eastern territories?” the slender looking warrior asked, trying to keep his voice quiet and failing miserably. Whispering didn’t do much to block a werewolf’s hearing.
“I heard about his mate. Apparently, she’s uncultured. She has no filter, and is the opposite of a lady. She even had the audacity to attack Alpha Roman.”
I smirked, pleased by the rumor already spreading. Alpha Roman had built a reputation for being strong, but pack members would start to question that as they heard about a woman smacking the alpha, especially when they heard that he didn’t do anything in return.
“Yeah, but I also heard she is absolutely stunning. I’d love to see her lips wrapped around my c**k. I’d love to show the feisty b***h her place.”
I bit my cheek so hard I tasted iron. The urge to rush down there and make them eat their words surged through my body, but I pushed it down. They would learn their lessons soon enough. I couldn’t let my rage get in the way of achieving my goal. Not tonight.
I moved to the stairs that led up to the third floor, knowing the warriors patrolling the pack house were too distracted to notice me. When I reached the landing on the top floor, I peeked around the corner to make sure no one was in the hallway. When I didn’t hear or see anything, I went straight to the alpha’s office. I had been there once before with the former alpha after I had received a particular brutal beating at school.
I shuddered at the memory. The former alpha made it clear that it was my fault for getting the beating. He warned me that if I continued to cause problems at the school, he would ensure I never graduated, and I was assigned to the most brutal of the omega jobs in the pack. After that day, I did my best to become invisible, wanting to graduate at the very least. The joke was on me, though, because I left the pack two months before graduation day.
I only wished the former alpha was still alive, so I could take his life with my own hands.
I pulled at the office door, but it was locked. I expected as much and quickly dug into my hair, pulling out two sharp pins and causing my hair to tumble around my shoulders. I made quick work on the lock, and when I heard the click indicating I was successful, I checked the hallway one more time before slipping into the alpha’s office.
The room smelled like Roman and s*x, and my nose instantly crinkled. It brought back the memory of him trying to force himself on me. My stomach churned and bile crawled up my throat. My wolf claws emerged, and the need for blood grew stronger. I wanted to kill him tonight, but I knew it was more complicated than that. I had to be patient.
I resorted to breathing through my mouth to limit the unpleasant scent, and I went straight to his desk. I rifled through his papers, hoping to find something useful sitting out in the open. All the documents were about financial requests from the school and other small businesses, requests for meetings from various influential figures, including a meeting with Alpha Ricardo.
I started on his top drawer next, and the first thing I found was a list of the warriors who were meant to participate in the Celestial Trials. The ages of the warriors ranged from eighteen all the way to twenty-five, and the majority of the list was filled with men. One name stood out to me. Hana Nakayama. She was the only female on the list.
I stared at her name for a moment before setting the list to the side. A blue sticky note with a time, day, and location pulled my attention. I grabbed the note, but before I could examine it further, the door to the office turned. I shut the drawer as quickly and quietly as possible, keeping the sticky note in my hand.
I pressed myself against the wall, hoping whoever it was would come in and leave without noticing me. After the confrontation with Roman earlier, he wouldn’t let me get away with breaking into his office. I held my breath, waiting for silence. The door closed. Papers shuffled. Then the door opened and closed again. I let out my breath and stepped out from my hiding spot, only to come face to face with Kylian’s brown eyes.
