After Sithaeth had shouted the technique’s name, a large storm of lightning began raining down in the area within the 8 electrical pillars he had created earlier.
Queen Yvette had reacted in the split-second Sitheth executed his skill and stabbed her sword into the ground before hastily casting a spell that encased her entire body in an armor of earth.
The lightning Sithaeth summoned bombarded the area around Yvette but a large brunt of the impact was mitigated by the earth armor she had encased herself and her greatsword in.
Since her sword was stabbed into the earth, the electricity conducted itself into the ground so the electrifying effect of the lightning was somewhat abated. However, Yvette had to continue channeling her mana into the armor of earth because the impact from the numerous thunder strikes was still deadly even without the electrocuting effects.
Although she was safe from the fatal electrocution, small bits of lightning seeped through her earth armor and coursed into her body which caused her body to slowly numb.
The skill, Thundergod’s Wrath, would continue until the caster stopped channeling mana into the spell. Sithaeth kept on increasing the input of his mana into the skill and the torrential downpour of lightning and thunder thoroughly decimated the battlefield.
A few stray lightning bolts even managed to invade Julius’s battlefield but he was smart enough not to get hit and sometimes pushed the ArchBishop into a stray lightning bolt’s path.
At the blood clone’s side, it too had noticed the large lightning field that was created just behind him. Since Sammael wasn’t in his best condition, Julius sinisterly ordered the blood clone to drive or pull the Holy Knight into the lightning field.
The blood clone didn’t hesitate to complete Julius’s orders. At first, the clone tried attacking and pushing Sammael into the lightning field, but the holy knight seemed to have noticed its intentions and dodged in the direction away from the deadly lightning field.
Since that didn’t work, the blood clone took the more direct approach. It rushed at the holy knight and grabbed him.
“What?!”
The clone locked the holy knight tightly and threw itself towards the lightning field, completely disregarding its well-being. Well, it didn’t need to care because it was just a clone. Julius could simply just make more of it if it perished.
“Y-You crazy bastard!!!”
The ArchBishop saw that but he could only helplessly watch since he still had to deal with Julius.
“AHHHH!!”
The sharp cry of pain from the Holy Knight after he was plunged into the lightning field rang through the air. The lightning mercilessly bombarded both the clone and the holy night.
And as this was happening, the ArchBishop raised a cry of dismay, “No! You heathens! You will not get away with this!”
The holy knight’s condition was unknown and he could care less about Queen Yvette who was similarly caught within Sithaeth’s skill.
The ArchBishop cast a voice amplification magic and shouted towards his church’s army, “God’s faithful, hear me!”
The church’s forces that weren’t yet engaging the fiends and dwarves in battle quickly turned towards the direction of the ArchBishop’s voice.
“Today, we shall vanquish the evil before us! Raise your hands in prayer! Send me your strength and help me!”
Julius chuckled at the ArchBishop’s antics. After his earlier shout, Julius felt a steady stream of mana began moving towards the ArchBishop from the church’s soldiers and even from some of the soldiers from the other armies that were within close proximity of one of the church’s people.
It wasn’t only mana, but he could feel that their life forces were being drained and channeled into the ArchBishop. A change happened in the ArchBishop’s body. His somewhat middle-aged face grew more youthful as more mana and life entered his body.
Torres then raised his staff and began chanting. Julius could feel that some kind of barrier had appeared around the man when he began chanting. Approaching him now was going to take some effort but Julius wanted to see what the ArchBishop was going to pull from his bag of tricks.
[Warning: Pseudo Ancient-tier magic detected!]
The system immediately alerted Julius but he didn’t really need the prompt. He could feel the enormous amount of mana the ArchBishop was gathering for his spell and knew that this technique was going to be devastating.
Instead of being wary, Julius was anticipating it. Earlier, his [Unholy] was cast quite haphazardly so now, he wanted to see what would happen if he poured all of his mana into the technique and fired it off at the ArchBishop that was similarly preparing an attack that would supposedly ‘vanquish’ him.
Julus began casting [Unholy] and this didn’t go unnoticed by Torres. The ‘saintly’ face he had on since earlier twisted maliciously for a split second before it turned back to his ‘normal’ face when he saw Julius’s actions.
‘Foolish demon! Your arrogance will be your undoing!’
Torres could only think like this for a few seconds before his face soon turned ghastly. The reason being that the black mass of darkness that was twisting around Julius’s hand was radiating with energy that was on par with his own technique.
The wriggling darkness was accumulating and building up energy much faster than his pseudo-ancient-tier spell and this was with his church’s believers who were present providing him with their energy to hasten the completion of the spell.
“Believers of the Holy Light! Stay strong and pray! We will vanquish this evil together!”
ArchBishop Torres activated another spell and this one began sucking in more of his believers’ mana and life force. Finally, the speed of his spell’s completion overtook Julius’s [Unholy] and after a few more seconds, the spell was completed.
“Behold, the power of my God’s believers!”
Julius had a smile on his face even after the ArchBishop’s spell was finished. Torres didn’t mind this because the important thing was that the pale devil’s spell wasn’t finished yet.
“Your day of reckoning has come, demon!”
Julius spat after hearing the ArchBishop’s words. He blatantly showed his utter disdain and disregard for the man’s words and presence.
The disrespectful act finally snapped Torres’s patience and he roared, “The Lord’s Judgement will smite you, demon! [Divine Providence]!”
The large amount of mana that the ArchBishop had gathered immediately dispersed and disappeared...and nothing happened.
At least, that’s what Sithaeth thought as he finally stopped channeling his mana into his [Thundergod’s Wrath].
However, he soon noticed Julius looking straight up into the air and turned his eyes upwards as well. He didn’t have to worry about Queen Yvette nor Holy Knight Sammael. The queen of Auxpex was currently immobile due to the lightning strikes that numbed her body while Holy Knight Sammael was completely charred and unmoving, his life and death currently unknown.
The sky began to brighten suddenly as a large white flame began descending from the skies over Julius’s head.
“King Julius! Get out of there!” Sithaeth cried out when he noticed the slowly approaching flame.
“It’s useless! The flame will follow him where he goes! It’s moving slowly now but it’ll soon pick up speed!” ArchBishop Torres said before letting out a sinister laugh.
Julius had tried moving from his spot but it was just like the ArchBishop said, it would follow after him.
He smirked before moving above the human army’s people but ArchBishop Torres had something else to say about that.
“Demon, this spell will target you and only you! Even if it explodes, the flames will only heal everything it touches while it will definitely kill you, its target!”
“...Thanks for the explanation, but it’s about time for you―”
A sickening squelch suddenly pierced through the air and ArchBishop Torres noticed that something red was protruding from his chest. It was a hand steeped in blood and within its grasp was a still-beating heart―his heart.
“You...how....?”
The ArchBishop slowly turned his head around and saw Julius’s face behind him. He didn’t know how, but the pale devil had suddenly appeared behind him when he should have obviously been in front of him.
The Julius that Torres’s spell, [Divine Providence,] was targeting quickly rushed up towards the white flame targeting him and collided with the attack, causing the white flame to burst into an explosion, completely disintegrating that Julius’s body into nothing while the white flames fell and spread through the army and began healing the humans of their injuries.
“That really is interesting…” the Julius, who was behind Torres, spoke up curiously after seeing the aftereffects of the white flame which healed everything it touched after it exploded.
”Oh, I bet you’re wondering why I suddenly appeared behind you when obviously, I was standing in front of you,” Julius said as he pulled his hand out from the back of the ArchBishop’s chest and stored the heart he was holding.
[Acquired: Lucent Creature’s Heart]
Julius smirked when he read the prompt before turning towards the ArchBishop who was slowly losing his levitation abilities. "Sorry, but I don't feel like talking to a corpse. You won't need this information for where you're going anyway."
The ArchBishop’s body began plummeting to the ground after Julius wrenched his arm from the man’s chest. This was witnessed by every one of the church’s believers that were present on the battlefield.
Julius looked at them and smirked before lightly saying, completing the incantation for his spell, “Ctholos, exhume malevolent darkness…[Unholy].”
The ashes from the previous Julius which had spread throughout the battlefield where the humans were after the church’s spell had exploded after making contact with him, began to rise into the air as black particles of light before suddenly blossoming into small flowers.
From these black flowers, darkness began pouring out and it ate away at the white flames that were left behind by the church’s [Divine Providence] spell and it quickly engulfed the area where the humans were in as cries of pain, despair, and agony rang through the air in the next instant.
Julius apathetically witnessed all of this from above. It was like music to Julius’s ear when he heard the humans squeal like pigs in their last moments before their deaths as their bodies began melting after being touched by the darkness pouring out of the flowers.
Trying to run away was useless as Julius’s skill had formed a ring around the area where his ‘previous’ self’s ashes had spread through.
When he looked down at the ground just below him, Julius saw the pure look of confusion and disbelief on the ArchBishop’s face as the man went through the final moments of his life just before death. Even in his last moments, Torres still couldn’t understand how he had so easily died to the pale devil hovering in the sky above him.
Julius wasn’t so kind as to explain it to the man as well and just watched as the ArchBishop took his last breath, eyes still wide open in disbelief and terror. After Julius saw that the relatively large red indicator on his map had disappeared which represented the ArchBishop who was below him, he let out a sigh of relief before chuckling to himself.
The man was dead. He had killed a man of the church and he did it so easily after applying a few tricks to deceive the man into letting down his guard after he cast his ultimate spell at him.
Being weakened from casting the spell gave Julius the opening he needed to quickly do away with the ArchBishop. Fighting a head-on battle with the zombie-like human wasn’t something he was keen on doing.
Julius had already planned things out from the beginning and he executed his plan the moment he used his first [Unholy] spell. He was never arrogant, Julius had been thoroughly prepared for their confrontation while the ArchBishop who was now dead obviously didn’t. Otherwise, he’d still be alive right now. Someone of Torres’s stature wasn’t an easy target for Julius to kill and he knew that.
In the end, the ArchBishop had to eat his own words for coming to the fight with a knife while Julius had brought with him a gun.
“My arrogance will be my undoing, huh? Well, I could say the same thing about you.”
