Chapter 6.0: First Task

1020 Words
Chapter 6 I was summoned by Miss Ava early in the morning. I wasn’t able to get much sleep because one of her men knocked at my door only a few hours before I got to close my eyes. He told me that I needed to be in her office after lunch. I got up and started cleaning my room for the time being. I dusted off the furniture and swept the floor. I then grabbed some rags and wiped the walls. Thankfully, Canary lent me a simple dress to wear last night. I thanked her and promised to repay her when I get my own money. But currently, I have nothing. Since everyone is busy with their respective chores and jobs, Canary agreed to go with me. It’s my first day at the job so I still need some guidance so that I don’t mess up and drag everyone else with me. Last night, Canary and I talked about a lot of things. She told me more about herself, she retold her story of how she was sold here but with greater detail. She also told me everything she knew about the dark organization. She’s a very bright and enthusiastic person, who still manages to smile brightly no matter how grim her current situation is. I really admire her for that. I was taken to this place when it was night time, so I couldn’t really see it properly. But now that I’m seeing it on time, it looks completely different. The streets we passed through were busy and we bumped into a lot of people who were just going through their daily business. It took some time, but we finally arrived at the place we went to yesterday. There are a lot of suspicious carriages coming in and out of the way, but no one ever stopped to point it out. It seems that illegal transactions are still going on even in broad daylight, people just choose to turn a blind eye to it. They must have known that it would be bad for them to stick their noses into the organization’s operations. It pains me toI remember how I got here. The two of us went to the establishment I came from last time. Canary knocked three times and waited for a while. The door finally opened and we were welcomed by the same woman who guided us yesterday. I believe her name was Evelyn. She must be Miss Ava’s secretary. She bowed her head and ushered us to go in. “Miss Ava is waiting inside.” When we got in, we found Miss Ava sitting on her office chair. It looked just as professional-looking as I remember, with all the books on display and its neat interior. When she heard our footsteps, she quickly turned to us. She was holding a bottle of wine in her hand, and it looked like she already drank half of it by herself . “Good morning Miss Ava. I heard you called for me.” I greeted her with a respectful tone and bowed deeply. “Yes, it’s a good thing you bought Canary with you. I actually have a task for you today. I was already planning to call someone to help you since it’s your first day. But it's good that Canary is already with you, that saves the effort.” She told me and the 2 of us nodded. It's good to hear that Canary can lend me a hand because I’m still feeling nervous. “But, the p*****t shall be split into two. The total reward will be 500 birks.” She added. “That’s fine with me.” Canary answered without hesitation and I agreed as well. “Now, both of you sit.” Miss Ava said, her aloof expression morphed into a more serious one. She ordered Evelyn to give the two of us several pieces of paper and a letter. The paper had a detailed address written on it, as well as a person’s name and face sketch. The name of the person on the file was Martin Forest. More detailed information about him was indicated on the piece of paper. “Find that guy around that address and give him the letter that Evelyn gave you. Tell him he doesn’t need to write back and just have him dictate his answer to the two of you. Also, after reading the letter, burn it.” She ordered us before taking a sip of the wine in her hand. “Are there any warnings or things we should take note of?” I asked her worriedly. “If someone tries to interfere or asks you about the transaction, kill them. I want this transaction to be as quiet as possible.” She said with annoyance. “You don’t need to kill him yet. I’m just giving him an ultimatum through this letter.” She added nonchalantly. So we are required to kill if someone finds out? “What did this man do?” I asked out of curiosity. I didn’t expect my job to require taking a person’s life all of a sudden, so I couldn’t help but want to know. “I don’t like people who ask questions, Sheena.” She said. Her tone gave off a silent but dangerous warning, causing me to freeze. She took a deep breath, maybe to calm herself down, and turned away from us. “Now off you two go.” She said while waving her hand dismissively. I can tell that even Canary was shocked that I even tried to question the task. “Yes, Miss Ava.” Canary politely responded before grabbing the papers and guiding me out. We both left Miss Ava’s office awkwardly, with Miss Ava’s cold look still etched into our minds. Unlike the stuffy feeling I got in that office, the breeze outside the building was more refreshing and calming. The people here are just busy moving around their own worlds without knowing about the illegal transactions happening just beside them. That, or they just choose not to know.
