GRANDMA KELLY
Forgive the sudden change in tone here, because Grandma Kelly was originally written for inclusion in a young adult horror anthology. It was my first serious short story commission after the Autumn books had taken off, and I was asked to write a zombie story for teenagers. I was inspired to give Autumn away for free online by Marillion , one of my favourite bands, and one of the first bands to fully embrace the collective power of their fans and the Internet (you should check them out – they’re not the band you might remember anymore).
By way of a weird little tribute, I named the characters and places in this story after the band members. I wrote and told them what I’d done, but I must have scared them off. They never wrote back...
