Was it because I ate his chocolates, used his table or maybe because I never respected him from the very beginning?
I scratched my head with both my hands.
"You screwed up." I said to myself. "You fvcking screwed up this time, Cameron."
I couldn't believe I was only thinking about me, myself and I. I forgot about Steve being Zeus' employee and Zeus could kick him out of his company because of what I did.
"Fvck." I muttered and slapped my cheeks and turned my phone on to check the time. Five minutes before seven twenty. Steve would be around that hour and as if in cue, I heard the front door opened.
"Cameron!" Steve called and my heart suddenly jumped in horror. "Cameron! Let's talk."
"Oh, God." I muttered and stood up. I breathed and Steve was already knocking on my door. I walked to the door and just stood there.
"I'm so sorry, uncle!" I said through the door and I jumped when Steve knocked again.
"What?" He asked and I didn't want to open it but I deserve being scolded. Steve lost his job and it was because of me. I didn't think about the hospital bills, mom.
"Uncle, I'm so sorry." I said as I opened the door and Steve was frowning.
"What are you apologizing for?" He asked making me frown. "Did you get a girl pregnant?"
"What? No. No. No. Of course, not." I said and shook my head.
"Then what is it?"
"What are we going to talk?" I asked back and he raised a brow before he smiled which was strange.
"So, you didn't get fired?" I asked.
He frowned at me. "What do you mean get fired?" He placed his arm around the back of my shoulders. "I got promoted!" He happily announced and I was dumbfounded.
Promoted?
"Really?"
Steve nodded and walked me down stairs. "And I bought dinner. I forgot to inform you through text about it but I assume you forget making dinner." He said and I nodded.
I was so nervous that I forgot to make dinner.
"Good so we won't have a lot of left overs." He said and let go of me and went to the kitchen.
**
"Why were you promoted?" I asked and Steve looked at me. We were having our dinner that he take-out from a Chinese restaurant.
"I've been working there for a long time and my supervisor kept on talking about me getting promoted for the last month." He said and I nodded.
"But I'm consulting you about this promotion." He said making me look at him.
"D-Did I do something?"
"No. I got promoted to a much higher position and work to our other branch in Europe." He said and I was stunned for a while.
"You're going to Europe?"
"Yes. As much as I don't want to leave you and Selene here but I think this is the best opportunity. You know how expensive those hospital bills and I—"
"It's fine." I cut him. I knew he was just worrying about us. "Thank you so much and you don't have to worry about me and mom here. I'm not a kid anymore and I can live on my own. I'll find ways."
"I know you can but I promised Selene to take good care of you. I can't stop worrying unless if you're with someone I can trust." He said making me frown. He sounds like he would look for a babysitter for me.
"I'm really good on my own, you know that."
"No, I know you. That you wouldn't talk if something's off or if you need anything. That's why I'm worried. And I know that I'm doing this also for me." He said. "Its for my own assurance that you'll be doing well."
"So you're going to hire a babysitter who will report back to you that I got A pluses to all my subjects, that I am look for a part time job and that I will hang out with my friends?"
"Not a babysitter. More like I asked a friend of mine to look for you." He said.
I groaned. "That friend of yours will just check if I am doing good right? Like just a peek and not a stalker? Then no problem." I was already playing with my food with the fork.
"No. You'll be staying with him." Steve said and I rolled my eyes back at him.
"What!?" I exclaimed. "What about this house?"
"You can just visit this house occasionally." He said and resumed on eating.
"Seriously?"
"Yes. Seriously."
"When are you leaving?"
"Next week. It was kind of a rush and they already told me about this a month ago." He said and I sighed.
I was the one to wash the dishes as always and Steve left me alone in the kitchen then I heard his shuffling footsteps, because of his slippers, again entering the kitchen.
"I forgot to tell you that my friend is offering an internship after he knew your course." He said making me turn to look at him. He was making himself a glass of milk.
"I forgot to introduce him to you during the company gathering because he just stepped in for a few minutes and needed to go somewhere else." He said and I nodded.
"So, how do you know you can trust him?" I asked and he looked at me.
"He's an old classmate and acquaintance and believe me, he can be trusted. He's the perfect babysitter for you. I know he could handle your attitude."
I frowned. "What's my attitude then?"
He chuckled. "Kind of Cameron attitude." I laughed. What the hell.
"Do I know the guy?"
"I mentioned him a few times and he's not that hard to find. He's quiet known since he's my boss right now."
