Chapter 3 - Jordan
I should be home already, but there I was, stuck in the same place for more than five minutes, looking into the puppy's eyes while he kept bitting the hem of my pants with more strength than he seemed to have.
His big blue eyes seemed to try to convince me that I should stay with him, or that I should take him with me, but I knew I couldn't do that.
One of the rules that the owner of the apartment that I lived in, insisted on reviewing with me almost ten times, was about the fact that animals were strictly prohibited in the building.
... However, it was clear that the puppy that held me back hadn't received this memo while he continued to cry to me...
"C'mon, Buddy. I know this isn't the best place for a dog, but I can't take you with me." Getting down on my knees, I said, running my hand over his wet fur. "I would really love to have you as a roommate, but I can't, I'm sorry."
And as if he could understand me, he started to cry, even more, pulling my shirt as he tried to get into my arms.
"Wow! Wow! I'm sorry, buddy! But I really can't!" Even if I thought that I was completely crazy for apologizing to an animal that couldn't understand me... I did it anyway as I put him back in the makeshift house that I had made for him a few minutes earlier, just to see the sadder expression than one dog could do on his face as he looked back to me.
Thinking how it could end terribly if someone found out about him, I really couldn't take him with me, especially when I didn't know anyone who could help me with him.
... I mean, the only closest friend that I could ask for a favor like that was Ria, but the way she lived her life wasn't the best for a dog as she was always traveling without a fixed destination...
"... C'mon! You must be kidding!" Looking at the sky, I said frustrated when it started to rain again. "I swear if I end up without a place to live too, it will be all your fault.
The puppy just looked at me confused, before something like a smile appeared on his face when I picked him up, placing him inside my backpack that was too small for him, making me ask myself what kind of breed he should be as I didn't understand much about dogs, and my place was too small for a big one.
... Running home, everything seemed to be going well, and I was already at the door of my apartment when my neighbor appeared...
"Good evening, Mr. Seiler. You arrived pretty late today." Mrs. Wilson commented with her friendly smile that no longer deceives any of the residents, and despite having nothing against the old lady, like everybody else who lived here, I knew she was the most gossipy person in the building.
"G-good evening, Mrs. Wilson..." Holding the backpack even tight against my chest, I hoped she wouldn't see the head of the puppy that was looking at me. "Yeah, my-my car broke down on the way, so I came back by foot today."
"Oh, dear! I'm so sorry about that, I'm going to stop holding you back here, and I'm going to let you get inside now because I can see that you really need a nice hot shower." She told me, putting her hand on my back before left, and I could have sworn I never got into my apartment so fast as today.
... My heart was beating so fast in my chest that it was almost like I had killed someone when I leaned against the door while thinking that I was repeating the same silly mistake...
... Again.
"... Oh, damn, Gods! This was so closer." I said to myself after sighing before I noticed that the puppy was staring at me with an expression that said he didn't know what was going on. "Sorry, buddy, but if you want to live here with me, we both will have to keep you a secret, okay?"
And as simple as that, he seemed to have nodded to me, after hearing what I said, and I was beginning to think that I really needed a good hot shower just like Mrs. Wilson had suggested.
"Well, now that you're here, what do you think about the two of us take a hot shower before I start to regret all of this?" Throwing my backpack on the couch, I said, taking him to the bathroom with me, and once again, the puppy seemed to agree with me, happily licking my face after I mentioned the hot water.
... Crazy or not, at least I didn't have to worry about him running from the bath as other dogs did all the time in movies...
About half an hour later, we were both completely clean and warm when I placed him on my desk with an old towel wrapped around his body while I went to get a pair of clean pajamas from my closet for me.
... However, before I could even decide what to wear, his crying made me go back to the bedroom...
"What is wrong, buddy?" Running a hand over his furry head, I asked when he fell silent after seeing me before I could hear the sound of my phone ringing in the living room. "Are you calling me over because of my cell phone?"
Confused about what was going on, I ended up talking unintentionally just to hear a high-pitched bark as his answer while he wagged his tail happily.
"Shhhh !!! Ok! ok! ok! I get it! You want me to go and answer my phone, right, but you can't bark, ok? You shouldn't be here, remember?" Once again, I said as if he could understand me while picking him up before going to the living room...
But there wasn't any way that I could deny that his joy seemed to disappear after hearing my words, being completely quiet while I answered my phone, just to hear the voice of the guilty person for my delay in this morning on the other side.
