Mark slowed down the car and Adan left us alone a minute later. He hesitated only for a brief moment, then he turned his back on us and walked away in the darkness. His steps were firm and confident and he seemed determined to never come back. I stared at him, wondering what had just happened. I couldn’t believe he was gone even though I was the one who forced him to leave once again. But it was the way our story always ended.
