“We will like to announce that upperclassmen are now allowed to leave the school and go into local cities, villages, and towns. You will need to check out and check in at the front desk before leaving and receive a bracelet. The bracelet will allow you to leave and track your location for your own protection when you check in you will give it back. Curfew for freshmen and sophomore is eight and curfew for juniors and seniors is ten. If we see a decrease in performance we might have to add more restrictions.” We heard over the loudspeaker right before the last class of the day got out.
“Class don’t forget over the weekend to go over this week's spells. You might have to use them in our school games. They also just might come in handy if you decide to sign up to assist an officer in jobs.” The officer teaching the class said before the bell rang. They have us a lot of opportunities to stand out and get ourself one step closer to becoming officer is that’s what you wanted.
Everyone left fairly quickly which is probably because now we can freely leave this school. Now it was just me, Jezebeth and the officer in the class room. “Jez, come with me to the closest city for some shopping.” If felt good to be able to go shopping whenever we want now. Before I could only go with Red on school breaks.
She smiled. “Okay…”
“I need to find something for my date with Zander in a few hours. All I have are our uniforms and a few outfits Red bought me.” I explained. Jezebeth sighed but didn’t say anything more.
“Jezebeth.” The officer said as she walked to us. “Will you be signing up to accompany an officer on jobs? I have some forms with me now.” She handed one to Jezebeth but didn’t even offer me any. Jezebeth was a lot more officer material than me.
“Oh… thanks.” She said then left with me.
“You’re not really going to do that are you?” That usually put you one step closer to be considered for being an officer but that’s exactly what we didn’t want.
Jezebeth put the slip in her backpack and shook her head. “Of course not, I just didn’t want to be rude so I took it.”
We went to the first floor to check out but there was a really long line of students at the desk. A lot of students wanted to leave after not being able to for so long. We both stared at the line that nearly filled the first floor. “Okay getting an outfit for later isn’t that important.” We laughed and ran back to the elevator and pressed the sixth floor. The seventh and eight were off limits to students because the seventh is where the officers rooms and their lounge area. The eight floor is where the head officer's offices and meeting room are.
“I can make you an outfit.” Jezebeth offered.
I smiled. “Really?” Having an outfit custom made by Jezebeth was a lot better than getting one from a store.
Jezebeth nodded and when we got to our room she summoned what she’d need and started casting spells. While she did that I did my curly dyed blonde hair by putting it up in a high ponytail. Usually I just wear my hair down but why not change it up? I was more excited to go out into the city than to go on a date but that was okay. I wanted to give Zander a change because he made it clear he really liked me.
When she was done I tried on the blouse and skirt. When I was changing Jezebeth turned completely away. I never understood why she did that because we're both girls. It wasn’t a big deal since I still had my panties and bra on but she'd still make sure not to look. “How do I look?” I said once the outfit was on.
Jezebeth’s face was bright red. “Wow you look really good… Zanders lucky.”
I shrugged. “It’s just one date. Thanks for the outfit, this is perfect and you’re amazing." I looked down at my phone. "I should get going, he texted me saying he’s ready if I’m okay with going a bit early.” He was impatient for the date and I thought that was cute. “He already stood in the line and checked us both out since it shortened a lot in the past hour. I just need to pick up my bracelet since they couldn’t release it to him.”
She nodded. “Have a good time.” I watched her get into her bed and curl up. Something told me she was sad but also not to pry so I left.
I walked down the hall and saw Alice. She looked at me and laughed. “Humans are so funny.” She coldly mumbled just loud enough so I could hear. I don’t know why but it irritated me, she knew exactly how to get under my skin.
“See you in detention Monday Alice.” I said as I passed by her. Our week of detention starts Monday so I thought it’d bother her to bring it up since it was kind of her mistake for not accepting Jezebeth’s help.
I went to the first floor and got my bracelet from the front desk without waiting in line since Zander did that for me. Then I met Zander outside the building and he seemed to really like how I looked. “Wow, you look beautiful.”
“Thanks Zander, so dinner right?” I asked as we walked down the path towards a mage city.
Zander nodded and his face was red. He seemed nervous. “Your hair looks really good up, especially with your bangs.”
“Oh thanks.” I wasn’t sure what to say next so we stayed quiet all the way until the mage city. “Wow Zander.” The city was colorful and inventive which made sense when it’s a city of magic. “This place is so amazing.” I wanted to jump up and down in excitement but I concealed myself. I’ve been to cities in the demon realm briefly and they didn’t look too different but the differences stood out.
“I’m glad you like it.” He held my hand and it felt a little weird. We’re close but I’m not sure if we’re that close yet. I let it pass since we are on a date.
We walked into a restaurant and Zander had called in ahead so we got seated pretty quickly. We started looking at the menu. We made small talk about school until the waiter came and took our order. “Ruth, how was it like growing up in the human realm?”
I was surprised by his question. “The same as growing up here.” I was in the human realm for eleven years and in the magical realm for four years so I feel like I’ve grown up in both realms. “Only knowing one place, in the human realm I only ever knew my house. Me and my sisters didn't go to public school and we rarely left. Sometimes we bugged my dad enough to take us places but that was rare. My older sisters would take us to the park but it was in the neighborhood you know? IT felt just like it does here, we just stay in school. I feel like I don’t know the human realm or the magical realm very well besides what I see on TV in both. If anything I know the demon realm better. When me and Jezebeth have gone there for holidays and a couple summers we saw so much of the realm. Last summer we even snuck out of the castle at night and she showed me where she grew up.” Red and her husband were really against us seeing no man’s land. No man’s land is the barren part of the demon realm that isn’t a part of the kingdom where a lot of low class demons live. Low class demons are dangerous and blood thirsty but high class demons like Jezebeth are civil and have control.
“At least things are changing here now. I want to show you everything. There’s so much to see in this realm.” He said with a smile on his face.
We talked a little more before the food came and had a good time but I didn’t feel anything. He paid the bill and we left. “So? Did I do good?” He asked.
“You did great, you’d make a really good boyfriend just not to me.” I shrugged. “I’m sorry Zander, at least you can move on now.” I felt so bad but it’s not like I could force myself to like him. I’ve only ever seen him as my friend.
He frowned. “Yeah, is there a reason? Is there something you don’t like about me?” I guess there could have been a reason but there was no chemistry for me.
I shook my head. “No you’re fine, I just don’t feel a romantic attraction to you or a s****l one for the matter…” This had to be the most uncomfortable conversation I’ve ever had.
“You’re not attracted to me? Okay but what about me isn’t attractive?” I guess people just want something specific so it doesn’t feel personal. “Like is it because you’re not attracted to anyone outside your species? I know some people are like that.”
“Oh.” I started to think more, I never really thought about the kind of person I am or would be attracted to. “I don’t know.” It’s hard to pinpoint a reason when I’ve never had a serious crush or ever even thought about my type. “I think mages are good looking, I think elves, humans, dragon shifters, demons, all intelligent, civil, sentient life is attractive to me appearance wise.” I started thinking about specific people I’ve ever found attractive to see if there was a difference between them and Zander. “Oh.” I laughed. “Maybe I do have a type and you definitely don’t fall under it.” I joked.
“What? I’m not tall enough?” He asked.
I shook my head and chuckled a little because he's pretty tall already and the comment was over all silly. “You’re a boy.” I shrugged. “Women are pretty and I like pretty. Femininity is super attractive so maybe try on a dress.” I laughed because Zander was super masculine in my opinion.
“That’s not fair, you’re canceling out half of the population.” He whined.
I laughed harder. “You are too, don’t you only like girls?”
Zander’s face got red again. “Well yeah." He sighed. "Okay you’re right.” He started laughing with me a little. “I guess I’ll just have to give up on you then. It’s better this way, you’re my best friend so I at least you can just stay that.”
I stopped laughing and smiled. “Good, I think someone else likes you anyway.” I mentioned.
“Really who?” He asked quickly which made me laugh at how quickly he could just move onto the next. “Come on Ruth tell me.” He begged.
"No because I don't know for sure." I laughed as I started running back to school and he chased after me. Zander was one of my best friends too so I’m glad things are gonna stay the same.
