13 - A prayer to the Goddess

847 Words
Her breath was shaking and her heart wasn’t beating regularly, she was arrhythmic. She had to be using way too much mana! “Give me mana flask, stone, anything!” I desperately mind-linked everyone around us. We had always kept the witches’ war supplies we had stolen or got from any dead ones. The less mana flasks they got back from their dead kin, the better for us. Them having limited mana meant a huge advantage to us on the battlefield. They wouldn’t be able to harm us so efficiently, they had to choose which spells they were to use very carefully. But now, now it was playing to my disadvantage. If I were to lose her over her not being able to finish healing because of the lack of mana flowing in her body, I would never… A growling gray wolf belonging to my beta carefully approached us with a blue flask in his mouth. A quick eye contact with him and he willingly gently set the flask on the ground in front of me to not break it. “Here.” I quickly grabbed it and pushed it against the witch. It burst into millions of tiny pieces while the blue liquid seeped inside of her body. But it wasn’t enough. She was still on the verge between life and death. I gasped for air, my throat growing tight. All my help was too late. If I had just had the mana flask with me, if I even had gotten here sooner, then Zack wouldn’t- “You can’t die, hear me? You can’t-” My voice grew silent. She didn’t hear me. Her mind was already somewhere else as I was holding her body which was growing heavy. Chase, what do we do?! Our mate… Our MATE! Her body was going limp. Her head was hanging down from my arms. My arms that were holding her body, which was growing colder, were shaking. Her lifeless body turned heavier with each second passing. Her breathing was shallow and too quiet. Then suddenly an idea crossed both our minds. My fangs grew bigger just before I sunk them inside of her neck. She was silent. Not even a single hiss or shriek from the pain it had to cause her. I pulled away quickly, with the last glimmers of hope I gazed at her face. She didn’t wince. Her face was the same as before. Blood wasn’t coming out from the mark I gave her, either. Was she really dead? Was I too late once again? I hugged her even more tight against my body, hoping my heat would warm her up. I closed my eyes, squeezing them tightly. I didn’t want to see anything bad happening to her. I was silently whispering, praying, with her in my arms: “Dear Moon Goddess, o’ mighty ruler of the night, the time in which you dwell is passing, pray give us mortals the last glimmer of light. We, your faithful children, are following your wishes. Mother of wolves and sister to… witches, the hour is passing. Do give us your blessing before your mark is lost in the last moments of night.” My breath grew more and more shaky. I can’t lose you. Please.I was on the verge of tears. The heart in my tight chest was almost barely beating. If she died, it might even stop altogether. I didn’t want to open my eyes. I didn’t want to see it. I buried my face in her hair. The first and the last time I could ever smell her scent so clearly. Her hair was roughed up from all the fighting she had to go through. Her hands grew calluses from trying to survive away from the palace. She was no longer the polished princess as I had met her before. Was this really the end? Me squeezing her lifeless body in my arms, not even being able to see her enchanting eyes again, her slightly wavy hair flowing down from her shoulders. Her tiny fingers pointing at me. Chase, what do we do? I was lost. My whole world came to a complete stop. I took a shaky breath, taking in her scent again. “i***t. Did your ears fall off? Listen properly, her heart is still beating. She probably just needs to rest somewhere safe.” Chase was on top of his game, while I was an i***t alpha to the rest of my pack and even to myself. I marked her as my mate without her consent or without her even being aware of it. Just how low had I fallen? And now I was kneeling down in front of her, completely naked, while she almost died right in front of my eyes. The agony I was feeling from all of it was something I could never imagine. I got educated to be a gentleman and a flawless leader. Not to be a complete wreck while almost losing my intended mate. Why did the Moon Goddess choose like this? A witch, our enemy.
