I rapidly swished my hand at the small flame, which picked up the wolf and threw it a couple of meters away from us. All my comrades urgently gathered at one spot in the middle surrounded by trees, where the small flame flickered peacefully only a while ago. I added my other hand, making the fire grow into a big enough fire circle a few meters high around us to keep the wolves away.
“Iana, take others to the safe point!” I yelled at her through all the growling, howling and barking. I had to keep up the fire circle burning around us with the leftover mana I had for as long as I could. My arms were stretched with my palms facing the scorching hot flames.
“What about-”
“GO!” I yelled at her, drops of sweat coming down along my cheek and forehead. I wasn’t going to be able to hold it for too long. My mana was almost gone. Being this far from our land, mana was replenishing more slowly for everyone. I could afford to keep this protective burning spell for only about two minutes more. That was my limit. And I was nearing it too quickly. I gulped and closed my eyes to focus. I had to give them enough time to safely get away from here. At last, everyone got to know what they had to do. I heard the other witches swiftly warping away, one by one. I was keeping my mana flow as stable as possible but the flames around us were growing weaker each second.
“Last one! Rose, you going!” Iana shouted at me so I would hear her through the loud fire cracking, growls and howls that were encircling us. My flames grew weaker again. I poured the leftover mana out through my outstretched palms for the last time, so the wolves wouldn’t see me warping away. I leaped away from the fire and my body was slowly turning into dark gray air. But before I disappeared into air completely, something pulled me back. A sharp pain pierced my right leg. The burning sensation on the left one wasn’t even comparable.
I opened my eyes to a huge wolf above me. I couldn’t feel my legs, they were getting paralyzed from the dill-infused saliva. And those huge fangs were right above me, ready to bite my head off. I scraped the last few drops of mana left in me to keep the wolf’s head away from me with a mana shield. But he was stronger than me. I was bleeding, my mana was almost gone.
Am I going to end like this?! Head bitten off by this ugly beast?! I was pushing against him, keeping him away to save the last seconds of my life. But my shield was growing cracks every time I squeezed the last drops of my mana into it.
Liam Dalton
My wolf was storming through the forest. They finally found the group of witches that had been running away from us for so long! But finally, finally, we found them weak and unable to resist. This was the best catch of the past few months. A certain win.
“Liam, stay back in command! Gammas got to them!” I heard the rushed voice of the beta’s wolf.
“We’ll get there first!” Chase, my wolf, was in command now. I was seeing red. I wanted them dead at the spot for causing so much suffering to my people. The less witches there were, the safer we were.
I was getting closer to the fire wall. With each leap I was a few meters closer. I wasn’t letting them get away. Not this time. Not when I finally had them within my grasp.
“Alpha, we got one!” I took another victorious leap. But instead of stopping to see the scene, Chase didn’t stop, he kept rushing full-speed into Zack, who was standing above a witch. Chase threw him over and jumped over the witch. What are you doing, Chase?! They are our enemies! It’s only right to- I saw her haggard face. It was her. The woman that recognized me on the terrace back then at the ball. Chase howled. Chase… Chase?! You can’t mean this seriously! Chase! I was trying to talk to my wolf, pulling against him as hard as I could, but he wasn’t listening. He was in command. He was the one who decided that he was going to keep standing over her to protect her. Her widened eyes full of fear were staring right into mine, tying my stomach into tight knots. Chase! Stop it! You know who she is, let Zack take care of her! She’s his… prey. I almost didn’t say the last word as my throat tightened. She was Zack’s prey. And I couldn’t stomach it. There was no way I could let her get torn into pieces by him. My chest tightened at the thought of it, making me feel as if I was out of air.
