Freya

Having a rambunctious four year old kept my life busy! My little girl was my whole life. At first the thought of raising her by myself was terrifying,  But if the Marine corps had taught me anything it was that I was self resilient. So with the help of my wonderful family and awesome best friend Kellum. I was doing very well. I had my own home with a yard, and a job I loved. I was also partners with my brother in the local bar, and stayed busy with just a couple good friends and that was all I needed. Except now that I knew Chase was back in town I was having thoughts of him. Thoughts I had buried a long time ago.       I even had hot sexy dreams about him last night. I hadn't had a s*x dream in years! I woke up with my sheets tangled around my legs and feeling very sexually frustrated. I reached for my housecoat and slipping it on I padded to my kitchen where I could already smell the coffee. Kellum was seated at the kitchen table with my daughter April. She was scarfing down her cheerios and he had his nose in the newspaper.      I dropped a kiss on my daughter head. brushed my hand across Kellum's shoulder. "Good morning." I grabbed a coffee cup out of the cupboard and dumped coffee into it. Then I plopped into my chair.       Kellum grinned at me. "Long night?"      "No, not particularly. I got home before midnight. I had a quick meeting with Scott then came home. You working at the bar today?"      "Yeah, Darren called and asked me to come in. He has tux fittings and stuff to do in New Port News. I guess his buddy made it in last night so they are going shopping. Asked me to run the place till close tonight. I won't be able to pick April up this afternoon." He folded the paper and laid it on the table.       "I saw Chase at the bar last night. I caught Tommy pissing off the front sidewalk while I was patrolling." I shook my head. "Dumb ass. Then when he saw me coming he wagged it at me."      Kellum started laughing. "I think the man has a crush on you Sheriff."      "Haha, not funny!" I gave him a little push.      April set her bowl on the table after she had drank down the milk from the bottom. A little milk mustache on her upper lip. Her light green eyes meeting mine. "All done mommy."      "I see that." I took a napkin and wiped her mouth. "Lets go get you dressed and ready to go to Maw Maws." She jumped out of her booster seat. She'd be five in a few more months. I needed to find a kindergarten to get her enrolled. She was growing up so fast it seemed.      I followed her to her room and helped her into a purple shorts set. Purple was her favorite color right now. It changed from week to week. She grabbed her favorite bear off the bed." I'll go watch cartoons mommy while you get dressed."      "Okay bug. I won't be long." I laid a clean uniform out on the bed and then headed for the shower.      After dropping April at my moms I went to the station. Two of my deputies were in there talking with Janet, the day time dispatcher. She was pretty. Freshly graduated from high school and looking to go to college in the fall. She had only worked weekends during school, but now that summer was here I let her come in all day, Shara taking over at night, and Rhonda on the days off.      "Morning boys." I sung out to the deputies. "Don't you have neighborhoods to patrol?' I asked heading to my office.      "Morning Sheriff" They chorused. Grabbing keys off the hook they headed out to the squad cars and went off to patrol.      "Sheriff" Janet came to the doorway. "Mayor Bishop has called twice. He'd like to speak to you about the carnival coming up in two weeks. I think he's worried because of Darren's wedding falling into the same time frame." She scrunched her face.      "Okay, let me get some coffee and I call him back." I grabbed my cup up and poured a cup then grabbed the phone and called city hall. "Mayor Bishop! Good morning!" I greeted when he answered.      "Good morning Freya, I realize you have a lot going on right now with Darren's wedding and all, but I just need to make sure your office is on board for the carnival in a couple weeks. We'll need security for the entertainment and the riff raff that like to populate these events."      I chuckled. He meant the local trouble makers that like to run through crowds and cause mayhem. Usually teenage boys bored with small town life. "Don't worry Mayor, I've hired on a couple part-timers to handle the event. I won't stretch my deputies too far out. Darren will be back from his honeymoon by that time too, so I'll have him to help out as well. I've got it covered." I assured.      "Good job Freya! I'm so happy we put you in office. Okay then, I'll back off and let you handle it. You have a good morning and I'll see you at the wedding."      I managed to get through the morning without any major crimes and even let Tommy out of his cell to go home and clean up.       He offered me apologies profusely. He cheeks stained red as he met my eyes. "I'm so sorry Freya. I was an ass."      "Yes Tommy you were, but you always are when your drunk. When are you going to to learn?"      "I'm...um...well" He rubbed a hand over his face. "I'm sorry Freya." He said again." He ducked his chin and left.      I made my way to the bar for lunch. I knew Kellum was there and we could share a sandwich together. I grabbed a stool at the bar and pushed a bag at him. He opened it and grinned. "Grilled cheese! My favorite!" He popped a fry in his mouth. "You want water or soda?"      "Mumm, water please. I have had so much coffee this morning. My brother get off?" I bit into my grilled cheese.      "I don't know. I haven't seen him. May have." He plopped down on a stool next to me. He wore a prosthetic leg on his right leg that went from the knee down, but other than that Kellum was a handsome man. Since coming here to live with me and April he'd dated a couple girls here in town, but nothing very serious. War messed with his mind and sometimes he had a hard time around loud noises. I'd make him a cop if he'd want, but he was still fighting demons and said putting a gun in his hand at this point was too dangerous. After having to talk him down some nights I agreed with. He had been with Peter when he was killed. He still relives it in his night mares. He's my best friend. He was Peter's best friend. I love him and want only the very best for him. I think being a part of our lives keeps him sane. April makes him smile.      I reach over and steal a fry. "I can bring you dinner when I get off. Then I'll go get April and have a movie night on the sofa with her."      He grinned. "I watched that Frozen movie with her four times last night. She sure loves herself some Elsa."      "Don't I know it!" I giggled. She wants to be Elsa for Halloween. She's already planning."      "That's months away yet. She'll change her mind about six times by then."       "Maybe more." I gulped my water down and wiped my hands on a napkin. "Whelp!" I pushed off my chair. "I need to get back on duty." I ruffled his hair. "You have yourself and awesome afternoon handsome!" He swatted my ass as I walked by. Darren and Chase walked in the door just as he did that.      "Hey, hey, hey!" Darren grinned. "No fraternizing with the help little sis."      "Oh can it!" I remarked. "He's my brother too.  Hi Chase, good to see you again. This lug talked you into tux shopping?"      Chase looked from Kellum to me. "A yeah. We were headed for fittings."      I smiled. "Well my lunch is over, need to get back. Bye guys!" I called as I went through the door. "Roast beef sandwich with pickles for dinner Kellum?"      "Sounds good Freya thank you!" He called back. I waved and climbed back into my patrol car.
