Alice - POV
"Please have a seat; we'll begin the interview," Mr. James Davis said firmly. I nodded as he maintained his composed demeanor and inquired about my interest in the associate lawyer position rather than the paralegal role.
"I'm sorry to interrupt, but I applied for the Paralegal position, correct?" I asked, seeking clarification from Mr. Davis.
"Are you not aware of the job you have applied for?" Mr. Davis responded briskly, making me uneasy as confusion overtook me.
"Ms. Brooks, the Paralegal position, has been filled. We currently have an opening for an Associate Lawyer. Are you interested in this role?" Mr. Davis asked, this time in a softer tone. I could sense his empathy as I struggled to keep my composure, eager to secure any job.
"Yes, Mr. Davis, I would be interested in applying for the Associate
Lawyer position," I whispered, trying to hide my disappointment at not getting the job I originally applied for.
"Very well, the interview rounds are complete. You will receive a call from the Human Resources team regarding the next steps," he said. I collected my certificates from him and walked towards the exit, feeling dejected.
As I stepped out of the building, I grumbled, "Ugh, I need to look for more job opportunities," realizing that Mr. Davis wouldn't offer me a job. I felt even worse because he was my second mate, who seemed unhappy to have me around.
My confusion deepened as I reflected on the application form I filled out, realizing I hadn't read the position I was applying for. The entire encounter left me feeling frustrated and defeated.
"I need a coffee to calm down," I muttered as I headed toward the café. I got the latté coffee. Suddenly, my phone rang, and Levy's name appeared on the screen.
"Ouch!" I exclaimed as I spilled hot coffee on my clothes as bumped into someone.
"I'm so sorry, miss," the man said apologetically.
"It's okay," I muttered, angry about the ruined clothes. As I took a second to compose myself, I noticed that the man's energy reminded me of Mr. Davis.
"Can I buy you a coffee as an apology?" he asked.
"Um, sure," I said, hoping to get away quickly to fix my ruined clothes. I asked for a latte and headed to the restroom to try and remove the stains from my blouse and skirt. As I scrubbed the coffee stains, I couldn't help but curse my unlucky day.
I stepped out, feeling frustrated, only to find the man who had spilled coffee on me waiting for me. I scrutinized him closely. He seemed quite handsome, as evidenced by the number of women who turned to smile at him. When he handed me the latte cup, he smiled at me. I looked down at the name on the coffee cup: Terry.
"You are a gentleman, Terry," I said.
"What gives you that impression?" he replied teasingly.
"You could have yelled at me and walked away grumbling and cursing. Instead, you apologized and offered me a coffee," I explained. Terry smiled at my reasoning.
"You have a point. I've been in a similar situation before, Ms.?"
"Alice," I said, sipping my latte as we left the café.
"You're not human, are you?" he asked, pausing for a few seconds as he met my gaze.
"I could say the same about you, Terry," I responded, averting my gaze from his olive eyes staring at me.
"Don't be alarmed, Alice. I mean no harm. All mystical creatures enjoy traveling in the human realm," he said with a serene smile. I sighed inwardly and offered him a small smile.
"Oh, you dropped this form," Terry said, handing me the photocopy of the application form I had filled out.
"Thank you," I whispered.
"So, how did your interview go?" he asked. I looked at him, a little confused about how he knew, but then I noticed his gaze directed at the paper I was holding from the California Law Firm.
"It went well," I replied with a fake smile, and he nodded.
"I hope you get the job soon, Alice. See you around," Terry said as he got a call from someone and walked away in a different direction. I met with Levy and told her about my shitty day, not mentioning the mate bond thing to her. When I got home, I changed into my pajamas. I made some scrambled eggs for dinner, feeling scared about staying alone in the enormous apartment. Why did Levy have to go on a trip? I hate being alone. I watched a Korean drama while devouring mint chocolate ice cream.
"How are you doing, Hydra?" I suddenly felt weak.
"I am fine," Hydra's voice came weakly. I felt anxious about rejecting my second mate without even consulting my Dragon. Hydra had to suffer because of my foolish decision.
"Don't be too hard on yourself, Alice. I can handle anything. You should live your life in peace rather than worry about your second mate," Hydra scolded me like a mother would her child. Tears pricked my eyes at her words. Hydra was not only my Dragon but also my guardian.
It had been weeks since I had been interviewing with various firms. I just wished to get a job soon because staying home alone and doing nothing made me sicker, and my mind played the same horror of the past years with Jeffery. His abuse made me sleepless at night.
The doorbell startled me, as Levy had no visitors coming over. Who could it be at the door? I walked over to the Doorcam to see that it was Isha. Seeing Isha on the other side made me happy as I opened the door.
"Alice, I'm sorry I didn't inform you of my arrival in advance," Isha said.
"I'm so happy to see you, Isha. How are you doing? And what about Grandma? Is she doing okay?" I asked. Isha beamed.
"Grandma is doing fine; as you can see, I am healthy. I came by to see if you and your Dragon are doing fine," Isha asked concernedly.
"We try to cope with the effects of the rejection spell," I added, trying to hide my melancholic voice, but it was useless. Isha knew I was suffering as her face creased with concern.
"I knew this could be the case, so I asked the witches to give me some potions to reduce the suffering from the spell." I took the vial and thanked Isha for thinking about my well-being.
"What is going on? You look lost in thought," Isha asked. Should I tell Isha I found my second mate? I thought not to at the moment as I had to speak with Mr. James before talking to others about our mate bond.
"Alice, what is going on? Your silence is killing me. Are you in trouble?" Isha asked with a worried tone.
"Nothing serious, just a little stressed about finding a job," I said with a smile to put Isha at ease. She examined my expression for a moment and sighed.
"Don't worry, Alice. You will get a job soon," Isha reassured me. I smiled at her. Then Isha showed me a letter with a name that shocked me. It was for Mr. James Davis, and it had the royal seal of the Dragon. I recognized the seal from my court case, where Queen Ella had used it. Could Queen Ella and Mr. James be trying to rekindle their relationship?
