Recruit

James - POV It has been a frustrating week. Despite several rounds of interviews, none of the candidates met the qualifications for the associate position. My mind wandered to when I first met Alice, with her soft skin, sharp features, and curly golden locks. I scowled at my own thoughts, feeling frustrated. A snort escaped my lips involuntarily, catching the attention of my colleague, Dave. "What's the matter?" he asked skeptically. "Nothing," I replied dismissively. "Why are you here? Didn't you hate being in the human realm?" Dave chuckled awkwardly, holding out a shiny envelope. "I thought you'd want to see this." As soon as I saw the letter from Ella, my heart began racing. It was an invitation to a dragon festival, and she asked for my forgiveness and about my health. I skimmed through the letter and folded it back into the envelope, tucking it away with the rest of the letters from Ella and Darcus. "Are you going?" Dave asked. I glared at him, not wanting to discuss my personal life. "Let's talk about something else. I still haven't found any suitable candidates for the job." Dave nodded sympathetically. "I think I may have found someone who meets the requirements." He handed me a form filled out by Alice. As I looked at her photo, memories of our past interactions flooded my mind. I felt a pang of longing but quickly pushed it aside. "I don't think she's fit for the job. Her timid nature won't work well in this position." Dave looked unconvinced. "Give her a chance to prove herself. Freshers are often meek at first." "I have work to do, Dave. Let's drop this for now," I said brusquely, grabbing my coat and heading out the door. As I made my way to court, I focused solely on winning the case. I could sense my client's (who is the defendant's) nervousness when I stepped out of the car. "Mr. Davis, you're here!" Richard exclaimed with relief. "Of course, I'm here. I'm your lawyer, after all," I replied with a reassuring smile. "What's the matter?" Richard looked apprehensive as he explained the situation, and I prepared myself for the upcoming legal battle. "Well, the plaintiff hasn't shown up yet. If she doesn't take her case back, I will be done for," Richard said, his frustration palpable. I listened to the problem, knowing that Richard, the CEO of Foods, had been falsely accused by his ex-fiancé, Ana. After investigating the matter, I discovered that Ana had falsely accused Richard of infidelity because she wanted money. Richard and I made a deal with her, and Ana agreed to take the case back. "You need to relax. We still have time," I said, trying to calm Richard down. I stepped out of the room to use my powers to locate Ana's whereabouts. Although I hated using my abilities in the human world, I couldn't resist when justice was at stake. I called Dave and asked him to teleport to Ana's location. "Who's Ana? Oh, wait, plaintiff," Dave asked, confused. "Yes, get her here. I can't afford to lose this case," I said urgently. "You know it's illegal to use your powers like this," Dave hissed. "As if you're a saint and have never broken the law," I snapped, irritated by his holier-than-thou attitude. "I broke a few, but I'm not going to Ana's place. Our recruit must accompany her to court," Dave replied. "How did you know Ana wouldn't show up, and who is this recruit?" I asked, trying to keep my cool. "I knew Ana would bail, so I knew only the right person could scare the s**t out of her," Dave said before hanging up. Richard walked up to me as I waited to see who Dave had recruited. "What's going to happen? Will we win the case or not?" Richard asked. Before I could answer, Alice walked in with Ana in tow. Alice was my newly recruited associate, and I couldn't believe Dave had known about her. I made a mental note to interrogate her later. "Mr. Davis, I brought the plaintiff, and thank you for hiring me," Alice said with a smile that irritated me. The case went smoothly in our favor, and I showed the court evidence against Ana. She was arrested for defaming Richard's reputation. I wouldn't have flipped the case on Ana, but she asked for it when she turned down the deal and put my client in the wrong. "Congratulations on your win, sir," Alice said softly, breaking me out of my thoughts. Holding her arm, I took her to a private corridor, and she looked pale at my touch. I quickly let go. "I'm sorry for touching you without your consent," I whispered, embarrassed. Alice looked at me, nodding her head. "I need you to be honest, Alice; how did Dave know you were the dragon?" I asked.
