I close my eyes, ready to feel her fangs stabbing deep into my flesh, but all I can feel is something furry tickling my cheek.
I open my eyes, curious why death is still avoiding me.
The growlings are still filling the air with a tense atmosphere, but now, they come from not one, but two wolves. Arya's black wolf is standing two feet in front of me, and another black wolf, a huge one, is right above me.
Alexander...
He is not in an offensive position, he is just using his body to shield me. His sister backs off after a few moments and goes after a tree to change herself back into the human form.
Alexander takes a step forward, his tail now hugging me.
"Brother! She is Miraj! Miraj!" Arya comes fuming to us. "Why are you protecting her?"
Alexander growls again, probably using the pack link to tell something to his little sister. They stay like that for a few moments, until Alexander goes behind a tree to regain his human form.
Now Arya cries, trembling with all her small body.
No matter how much she hates me no, no matter why, I always considered her my little sister too, my family. I love her and it hurts to see her cry. So I make the mistake to approach her, putting a hand on her shoulder, ready to comfort her.
This obviously is a bad idea since after feeling my hand touching her she instantly freezes. She slaps my hand with such power that I almost fall back.
"Don't touch me!"
She grabs my hair and pulls it so hard that she makes me kneel. I can, of course, put her down easily in human form, she is still a child after all, but fighting with Arya, no matter what she does, would probably kill a part of my soul.
"Arya! Let her go!" I hear Alexander scream as he comes running to us.
She obeys only after he uses his Alpha's voice to force her.
But that doesn't stop her from screaming at him. "You are protecting her. Brother, you promised me. You promised me when mama and papa died!"
That seems to hit a nerve since Alexander is no longer frowning at his sister, but looks sad and defeated. He almost looks broken. But he has all the right to be. He loved his parents so much. Everyone loved them. Alpha Michael was a great warrior, admired by all werewolves, especially by his son. And Luna Cloe was the kindest person I ever met. My parents adored them. I still remember how they used to laugh after a few glasses of wine when they thought me and Alexander went to sleep.
But they died protecting the castle. They died protecting the royal family as they swore they would do. And I still hear my parents cry their names from time to time.
Is their death the reason Alexander and his sister hate me? Somehow I doubt that's it. They were so dedicated to their duty and saw it as such an honor. I never understood that, but I admired them for their dedication. Just as Alexander and Arya did.
Alexander's voice pulls me out of my daydreaming.
"I am sorry Arya." When he says that I think, for a second, a blissful moment of hope that he will say that I am his mate and he will protect me. But instead, what he says breaks my foolish heart again. "I swear I am going to make them pay. I swear she and her cursed family will meet their ends in my hand and you will finally be able to sleep to the sound of their screams."
I get chills all over my body. He is so serious, so determined.
"But what have I done? What my family has done? Alexander, at least answer me!" I crack and scream, crying and trembling on the ground.
A punch in my chest makes me stop screaming and start gasping desperately for air. It came from Arya, but what hursts the most is that Alexander didn't try to stop her this time...
I'm not even surprised at this point, only hurt, inside and outside.
"How can you, Alexander..." I whisper, more to myself than to him. He stands there, frozen in his spot with so many emotions mixed in his eyes.
"Speak up, traitor, I can't hear you." Says Arya standing above me.
"I asked my mate how can he allow this!" I scream, not at her, but in general.
"Mate?" She asks taking a step back like something just hit her. "Brother is this...?"
But as his sister asks him, he does something that hurts me more than all the kicks, the slaps, the burns I suffered all these years. He turns his head, ashamed. My mate is ashamed of our bond.
"I am sorry, Arya. I didn't mean for this to happen." Is his only answer.
More members of his pack gathered around and are now whispering. Their Alpha has such a mate. Such a curse. Such a shame. They are looking at him with pity, at me with hate and disbelief. Some recognize me, some remember me. But no matter what, they all seem angry.
"I..." Says Alexander loud enough for anyone to hear. "Reject you, Miraj..." The words sound broken like it physically hurts him to say them, but that doesn't stop him. "As my mate, chosen by The Moon Goddess."
When he finishes talking I hear my wolf howling in pain.
"Alexander, please..." I cry out old as the pain in my soul gets increasingly worse and worse until I feel I am no longer able to breathe. I just lay on the cold ground, sobbing, gasping for air as everyone looks at me with dead eyes.
"Take her to the dungeon!" Is the last thing I hear before passing out. It was Alexander's voice...
