Valeria POV
Five woke up with a scream, startling the rest of us.
I rubbed my eyes and crawled over to the door of the cage, seeing that others did the same thing.
I saw Nine’s eyes glow and we all entered a collective thought space. Nine was a telepath, he could use his powers so we could speak with our thoughts. That way no one could ever hear us.
The reason for everyone’s curiosity was that Five had the power to get visions of the future and we wondered if she had a new one in her dream.
“Are you alright?” I asked Five through the link.
I saw five shake her head through the bars.
“Our time is coming to an end.” She said through the link, fighting back tears. “I saw soldiers. They were coming for us.”
We all looked at each other worriedly.
“Should we tell the Masters?” Two asked.
Five shook her head.
“The future will not be bright for the world if we do.”
“Do you mean that we should let those soldiers come and take us?” Eight frowned.
Five didn’t say anything, instead she projected the vision that she had seen directly through the link.
I saw soldiers storming the factory where they were holding us and the Masters killing us one by one.
My stomach sank at the thought, but I refused to let it show.
“That’s bad.” Four said. “But I don’t understand why we shouldn’t tell the masters of your vision.”
Five projected a new image through the link.
I saw London in ruins.
“The Masters lied to us.” Five said with a tremble in her voice. “We were never supposed to exist. We will be the end of this world if we are left alive.”
We fell silent, letting the gut-wrenching information sink in.
“I-I don’t understand.” Eleven stammered through the link. “Why were we created if we are the end of the world? The-The Masters said that we were supposed to save the world, not destroy it.”
“Let’s face it.” Six muttered. “We were dead the second we got our powers. The Masters were right about that part. No one will ever accept us the way we are when we have powers like these.”
“There is some hope.” Five said. “In my vision, I saw one of us survive.”
We stare at her through the bars.
“Do you know who?” Three asked.
Five shook her head.
I frowned.
“I don’t want to be that person.” I said. “I couldn’t bear to live if the rest of you were dead.”
Ten smiled at me.
“If I die, I’ll be haunting the one that survives, no matter what.”
I chuckled at the comment.
The door opened and a guard yelled angrily.
“GET BACK TO SLEEP, FREAKS!”

I was startled awake from my dream and looked around my bedroom. The rain drummed on the windowsill and the lights shone on the wall.
My apartment was on the eighth floor, and the faint sound of traffic came through the open window.
I glanced at the time. 1:30 PM.
Groaning, I rolled out of bed and walked into the bathroom to take a shower.
I had been up until 4 in the morning, persuading this guy to give me access details to his boss’ office building. The persuasion included going to a club he frequented, seducing him and convincing him that I was some bimbo that didn’t understand anything about security protocols. Then he blabbed pretty good on his own.
That was my job these days.
10 years ago, director Sampson rescued me from the scientists that made me a genetically engineered soldier. His sister Annie and her husband Lucas had just lost their daughter, so when Mr Sampson told them about me, they decided to adopt me. Mr Sampson came to visit me a lot. He told me to keep my telekinetic powers hidden from other people, but took me to MI6’s special training facilities to help me control them.
Even though I was a freak, and a lot of people in the intelligence community were very wary of me, he was always kind and respectful to me.
When I turned 16, Mr Sampson asked if I wanted a summer job while I finished school. I accepted, and joined his department when I wasn’t in school.
For the next few summers, I traveled to several war zones, using my powers in battle to focus on protecting civilian villages from getting caught in the crossfire. This was never hard for me. I had been training to do this for seven years with the Masters in that factory.
Soon, I had really made a name for myself. I got the nickname ‘Valkyrie’ in the intelligence community and when I finished college, I worked for Mr Sampson full time.
I thought that the nickname was funny. The Valkyrie, in Norse mythology, brought the dead warriors’ souls to Valhalla, and I was half Swedish, so it was kind of fitting.
Annie and Lucas had a son that was seven years younger than me. His name was Aidan and we hit it off right away. I considered Aidan a genius. He had skipped two years in school and was studying Computer Science at Richmond American University in London even though he should still be in college. Since I had a flat in Kensington, he moved in with me because it was closer than where his parents lived. That way he could look after the flat while I was on missions abroad.
When I had finished showering, I threw on a sports bra, a tank top and some sweatpants. I walked out into the kitchen and stuffed the clothes I had been wearing the night before in the washing machine.
While the washing machine started humming, I opened the fridge to look for something to eat.
I spotted the Ramen noodles, but I knew that Aidan would kill me if I ate them, so I settled with the last Oatmeal balls (Swedish delicacy) that I made two days earlier.
While I munched on the balls, I turned on the TV to watch the news when I heard the front door open and Aidan walked in along with his best friend Ned.
“Oi!” Aidan shouted and dropped his bag on the floor. “Is that the last of the Oatmeal balls?”
I nodded and grinned at him as I popped the last of it in my mouth.
“Not fair!” Aidan muttered. “When did you get back last night?”
I shrugged.
“Late.”
“Another guy’s arse getting kicked?”
I chuckled.
“Of course.”
I stood up to wash off the plate and he smirked at me.
“Wouldn’t expect anything less from you.”
Aidan didn’t know exactly what I was doing, but he had managed to get an internship last summer in the Tech Department thanks to director Sampson, so he had some idea what my job was.
Ned just knew that I was in the military, but didn’t know to what extent. He knew about my powers though. He was Aidan’s best friend since childhood, so I gave Aidan permission to tell him, but no one else.
My phone pinged and I glanced at the text message.
Arcade is on the move, now is the time.
I smirked, excused myself from the kitchen and went to put some clothes on while Aidan and Ned started to work on some assignments from school.
Back in my bedroom, I pulled out a red top, black sequined shorts, and black stockings. I de-tangled my curls and put on some makeup. I had dyed my hair brown, trying to cover up the shine it emanated every time I tapped into my powers. Even if it didn’t cover it completely, it was definitely an improvement.
Putting on a pair of black stiletto heels, I shrugged my black jean jacket on, said goodbye to Aidan and Ned and exited the flat.
I took the stairs to the roof, looking out over the street below.
Tapping into my powers, I activated the quantum field on my left arm.
Working closely with one of the best Technology scientists of the 22nd century came with some perks and I was equipped with a quantum field, like a second invisible skin.
The quantum field left a device on my arm, where I could activate a simple cloaking mechanism. That way I could fly over the city without being noticed by people on the streets.
And yes, thanks to my powers, I could fly.
The quantum field also provided me with a friction-proof suit if I activated it fully. It engulfed me and allowed me to basically change outfits in the blink of an eye. With the suit, I could fly at a very high speed without ruining my clothes from the friction. Since it had stopped raining and I wasn’t going that far, I didn’t need the suit today.
Activating the cloaking, I set off into the sky.
I was heading to a corporate building area near Covent Garden, and landed carefully in a secluded alley.
The cloaking didn’t make me all invisible. It just made me hard to spot when I was in the sky. So I still had to be careful when using it.
I slowly made my way into the building to access the office. I had a flash drive in my pocket to copy the hard drive.
Quickly in and out, not much of a fuss.
Sneaking past the guards by hiding in the ceiling, blocking out camera signals, and short-circuting the access panels, I got into the empty office.
I only had a minute before the backup security system would kick in, so I had to be quick.
Plugging the flashdrive into the computer, I started to work on downloading data.
I frowned when I realized that the data I was looking for wasn’t on there.
Maybe Arcade had hidden it somewhere?
I tapped into my powers and started scanning the room for hidden safes, but I found none.
Plan B, it is.
I waited until the alarm went off, then I quickly exited the office and started running down the corridor.
It didn’t take long until I was surrounded by Security.
The security guards quickly threw me to the ground and cuffed my hands behind my back.
I did little effort to resist them, hoping that Arcade would spill the information I needed once I got face to face with him and his big ego thought that he had me trapped.
While they threw a bag over my head, I smirked knowing that those poor guards were playing right in my hands.
And I didn’t have to do a damn thing.
