CHAPTER 5 – Meeting Anastasia
Cherry’s POV
What a shitty life I was living. But it was a great opportunity for me to find out the truth behind my death. I had to convince Mr. Clerk to send me there.
“Dad, I am willing to go there. I think it will be a great opportunity for me to get well soon. Plus, I guess I need a change of scenery also.” The word ‘Dad’ was useless for me to use. It was meaningless and was nothing more than just a word to me.
“I am glad to hear that, Evie. Doctor, I will take the necessary steps to send her there,” he said, turning to face the doctor.
“Sure, of course. I will leave you all alone now. Oh, and Ms. Evie, I hope you can go home soon,” the doctor said and left the room.
“Patricia, I think we should leave now. Evie is fine and the medical team will monitor her health. We will come again in the evening.” Mr. Clerk patted Mrs. Clerk’s shoulder and kissed her forehead.
“I want to stay here, Michael. Please?” she pleaded, reluctant to part with her daughter.
If she stays here, I won’t be able to plan what I should do next.
“It’s okay, Mom, I’ll be alright. I am feeling well now. Dad is right, the medical team will pay strict attention to me and their service is very good here. So, you don’t have to worry,” I said, convincing her to leave.
“Okay. But, sweetheart, please take care of yourself.” Mrs. Clerk leaned down and kissed my forehead. Sparks jolted through my body, probably due to the bond between the mother and daughter. I didn’t want to be insensitive and harsh towards them. So, I just smiled and nodded obediently.
As soon as they disappeared, I opened up Evie’s mobile phone. I started to check through her contacts, but she didn’t have much. Even when I went through her call log, there were only a few dialed numbers recently. The list mainly had the numbers of her parents and there was one under the name Ana.
Who is this Ana? Could be a friend or a cousin? Or was she another mafia girl?
Unfortunately, I couldn’t move for another two days, I had to stick my b***t to the hospital bed and sit back. It was useless to call the chief and inform him since he killed me. Plus, who would believe such a crazy story?
Two Days Later
“You are good to go now, Ms. Evie,” the doctor declared as he removed the machine plugs from my body.
“Doctor, is she really completely fine now?” Mrs. Clerk asked.
“She is out of the danger zone, Mrs. Clerk. The newly transplanted heart is working in her body positively. She is absolutely fine. I will prescribe some vitamins and medicine. You can purchase them from the hospital pharmacy. Take a lot of bed rest, Ms. Evie. Do not do any extreme activities or any hard work. Mrs. Clerk, it is your responsibility to look after her for a whole week,” the doctor explained while writing the prescription.
“What about her physiotherapy sessions?” Mr. Clerk inquired.
“You can send her there after a week, Mr. Clerk. I mean, you can even send her there now, but my advice, for her own good, is to send her after a week passes,” the doctor replied.
Mr. Clerk nodded at him in acknowledgment. “Okay, Doctor, I will talk to the academy today itself and make an appointment for her.”
This is going to be a great opportunity, Cherry. Go and find the truth!
Soon, I was officially discharged from the hospital and led to the car park. A luxury vehicle stopped in front of the entrance and I slowly got into it. It was a dark purple Range Rover and a brand-new one too. It was driven by a driver while Mr. Clerk sat in the front seat. Mrs. Clerk and I sat in the back seat. On top of that, I noticed two additional vehicles escorting us from behind and another one driving in front of us. All probably for safety reasons.
Mr. Clerk has a lot of enemies outside, I presume.
“Today Ms. Evie is silent and didn’t fight for the front seat with the master,” the driver voiced out, a little astonished.
Oh no, the cat has got my tongue. What should I say? Oh god, I have to learn everything about this girl’s life, every single thing! I am a parasite now.
I thought back to the movie ‘Venom’ that I had watched. I particularly recollected how Venom and Eddie fought to live with each other and how Venom became Eddie’s parasite to reach his goals. It looked like the time had come for me to become the Venom in my new situation.
“She has totally changed upside down now. The feisty Evie had disappeared after the surgery,” Mr. Michael Clerk said with a mocking smile. The driver chuckled as he looked at me through the rearview mirror.
As we were traveling, suddenly my phone started to ring.
Uh oh! I don’t want to answer this. How would I know who is calling?
“Evie, your phone is ringing. Answer it, baby,” Mrs. Clerk advised.
Think of a lie, Cherry!
I pulled out the phone and checked the screen. There was a single name flashing on the screen, ‘Ana’.
Oh no, who is this now?
Most of Evie’s calls were either made or received from this person and number. My mind started to contemplate whether I should answer the call or ignore it. Even if I did answer it, I had no idea of what I should talk to her about and I didn’t know how Evie and Ana talked to each other.
“Evie?” Mrs. Clerk shook my shoulder all of a sudden, derailing my train of thought.
I looked at her with surprise, “Huh?”
“What are you thinking so much about, sweetheart? It’s your best friend, Ana, calling. Where did you get lost? I was talking to you but you were deep in thought,” she said.
“No…it’s just….ummmm….I will talk to her later, Mom. You know that she will keep talking and won’t put down the phone if I answer. Plus, my head hurts.” Raising my hand, I pinched my forehead.
“Baby, are you feeling alright?” Mrs. Clerk placed the back of her right palm on my forehead to check my temperature.
“No, I’m fine. I just want to sleep for a little bit. I guess it should be alright after that,” I lied.
After about a half an hour drive, we reached their mansion. I had never seen a huge, luxurious mansion like that before. I mean, I had seen them in movies, but never in real life.
The large black gates were guarded by four guards and two Rottweiler dogs. By the looks of the dogs, they were ready to taste meat at any given moment. The guards were dressed in black suits, paired with a pair of black sunglasses and a Bluetooth earpiece. The gates were even monitored by CCTV cameras. As soon as our vehicle reached the gate, it was opened via remote control by someone stationed at the gate checkpoint. The guards saluted the vehicle and we drove along a concrete road where we were in between lands of shining green grass and a few huge trees for shelter.
On the way, the vehicle stopped in front of another massive gate and a red laser started to scan the vehicle. The security was tighter at this point and there were another three guards stationed at this gate. When the scan was complete, the vehicle moved forward and the gate opened via remote control again.
Once the vehicle drove forward, the mansion started to be seen. It was a white mansion with three floors and so enormous that I couldn’t even measure how big it was. In front of it was a white water fountain with a mermaid sculpture. The astonishing property surprised me beyond belief and my jaw dropped at the sight.
“Evie, you are looking at the mansion like you are visiting for the first time,” Mrs. Clerk blurted out.
A reply immediately popped up in my mind. Of course, I am, Mrs. Clerk.
The driver opened the door of the vehicle and I got down slowly. Another guard came to pick up my bags—I mean, Evie’s bags. Luckily, her clothes fitted me perfectly.
In front of the mansion doors, two middle-aged maids stood attentively to welcome us. They were dressed in a complete maid uniform, which was a black pinafore and a white shirt with a lace apron.
“Welcome, Ms. Evie. We were so worried about you!” Their faces brightened up with a smile as soon as they saw me.
What should I call them? I don’t know their names nor how Evie interacts with them.
“Hey….umm…thanks. I am good now,” I replied instantly to manage the situation.
“Mrs. Clerk, lunch is ready. You can go straight to the dining room,” one of the maids informed, bowing before us.
“Thank you, Jane. Evie must be hungry as well. Come, sweetheart. Let’s have lunch together.” Mrs. Clerk patted my shoulder and led me in. I smiled politely and stepped foot inside the mansion.
The floor was carpeted with a dark red posh carpet. By the looks of it, the maids must have been maintaining the mansion properly. The mahogany wood dining table could seat twelve people at once. The head chair was designed to be different than the other chairs and I assumed that it belonged to Mr. Clerk.
The chandeliers, candle holders, ceiling carvings, furniture, and basically everything there just screamed of the luxury they had in the world.
“Evie, come sit here.” Mrs. Clerk patted the chair next to her while Mr. Clerk sat on the head chair of the table.
The maids quickly started to serve us. The spread of food before us looked mouthwatering and attractive. They had to have been spending millions of dollars just on food. There were too many dishes laid out for just three people.
“Are we expecting company?” I asked inquisitively.
“Why is that, angel?” Mr. Clerk asked, laying a napkin on his lap.
Shaking my head, I looked at the food lined up across the whole table. “The food here is way too much for just the three of us. It looks like at least another ten or twelve people can eat from this spread.”
Everyone including maids started to look at me with their jaws dropped. It was like they had frozen in place all of a sudden.
“Why? Did I say something wrong?” I arched my eyebrows at them.
“No…no…it’s just…ummmm…nothing, let’s start enjoying our lunch,” Mrs. Clerk said, breaking the silence.
The maids returned to their serving positions and we started eating our lunch. The delightful taste of the food made me continue eating and soon, I had eaten more than my tummy could hold.
“Thank you. Lunch was remarkable and very delicious. You must have worked hard,” I expressed, turning to face the maids. They looked at me with complete bafflement.
“Evie, it’s their duty.” Mr. Clerk’s voice was laced with irritation.
Cherry, stop saying sorry or thank you here. It doesn’t suit your appearance. You are Evie, forget about Cherry! If you continue this polite behavior, you will get into trouble and you will get caught soon.
“Mom, I want to take a nap. I am a bit exhausted,” I said, stretching my arms.
“Sure, baby. Go to your room.” Mrs. Clerk smiled at me.
Great job, Cherry! Now, do you know her room? Think of something!
Luckily, I noticed my bags being taken to the upper floor.
“Wait for me!” I yelled out to the guard and followed him to the room.
Oh god! I am going to get lost in this huge mansion. My new life had started and I had to learn everything from square one.
“Ms. Evie, I’ll send a maid to arrange your clothes,” the guard informed, bowing to me.
“There is no need. I will do it. Thank you,” I replied with a smile. Maybe the smiling muscles had not been stretched in Evie’s face before. The guard looked at me with confusion for a few seconds and then left the room.
The room was massive, equipped with every comfort in the world. It had a private pool, a huge walk-in closet, a hanging TV, a brand new Apple computer, different sized tablets, and so on. I went to the window and opened the French-style balcony windows to see the garden. The room was located at the back portion of the mansion and I could see a vegetable and a fruit garden below. A few gardeners were busy at work in the gardens.
I yawned out loud and realized that I desperately needed sleep. I shut the windows and returned to the room. I crashed on the bed and jumped a few times on the spring mattress. Satisfied, I lied down, and soon sleep came to me.
“B***h, wake up!” I was startled by the sound of a girl yelling, I opened my eyes to find a blonde girl around 5’5 inches tall with brown eyes jumping on my bed. I rubbed my eyes and looked at her with a quizzical look.
“Why didn’t you answer my calls, Evie? Aunty said that you were hospitalized and without calling me back, you are sleeping here with your thong a** on the bed!” she screamed at me with irritation.
It was then the thought that she could be Ana triggered me.
“Why the f**k are you looking at me like that?” she asked, moving to the edge of the bed.
When I didn’t respond, her tone turned worried, “Evie, are you okay?”
“I will talk to you only if you can remember how we met for the first time?” I executed a plan to find out how Evie and Ana met and who they were to each other. I didn’t have any other option to figure out Evie’s relationship with her.
“What kind of a condition is that? Anyway, I will dramatically narrate to you the story, babe!” She winked and jumped off the bed, landing in front of me. She was truly a funny character.
“So here we go!” she said, preparing to start her dramatic narration.
“Don’t you dare hurt her again, you little punk! If you do, I will break your bones!” Ana yelled out, waving her finger in the air. “That was what you said one day when you threatened a boy after you noticed he and his friends were harassing a girl daily at the school. That was your first dialog against the bullying boys.”
“Oooooh…. I’m scared of our brave Evie!” Ana said mockingly. “The boy ridiculed you and pretended to be scared of you.”
Moving to the right to play my part, she continued, “You better stop it, otherwise you will regret making me angry.” Turning to look at me, she explained, “Your narrowed eyes glared daggers at the boy, Evie. You were boiling in anger at them. I was just looking at you with admiration, the brave girl who came forward to save me against the bullying boys.”
Clearing her throat, Ana moved back to the boy’s position “What will you do if I don’t stop bullying her? Do you think that I’m scared of you like the other rats here?” Ana took a step forward, “The boy stepped closer to you but he was around one or two inches shorter than you. You were the tallest one in the class. I still remember how he gulped nervously when your nose almost brushed his forehead.”
“Don’t test my patience, Robert! I am warning you one last time. Stop this and let the girl go. Do not bully her ever again,” Ana yelled, portraying Evie. “You were fuming with rage.”
She moved to the boy’s position and scoffed, “Oh, really?” Turning to look at me, she continued, “Then the boy yanked my hair and threw me on the floor. You clenched your fist and with your gritted teeth, you pulled the boy by his head and pulled him down, causing him to hit his head on the corridor wall with a loud thud.”
Oh, wow.
“The boy fell on the ground unconsciously and soon, blood started oozing from his forehead,” Ana said. Her dramatization made the scene play out in front of my eyes.
“Is there anyone else who wants to test my patience?” Ana yelled out, imitating Evie before tilting her head from left to right and stretching her arms. “The gang of bullies became afraid as soon as they watched what happened to their leader. Their throat went dry and the hairs on the back of their necks rose with fear.”
Exhaling, she turned to face me. “The school kids gathered in the corridor to see the fight. They knew that you could take on the whole gang of bullies at once. You rocked the school that day, Evie!” Ana’s eyes were sparkling with happiness. She still enjoyed the moment of their first meeting.
“Come on, show me your strength!” she shouted as Evie. Then she bent her legs slightly, positioning herself in a fighting stance. “You loved to fight. In fact, your favorite part of school life was doing martial arts as an extracurricular activity. Your favorite teacher was your Taekwondo teacher.”
Shaking her head, Ana continued acting. “What is happening here?” she said, with her hands on her hips. “The teachers came running to the corridor.”
“Oh my god! Evie, is this another stunt pulled by you? Look how terrible it has escalated this time!” Ana waved her finger angrily. “That is what a middle-aged male teacher said as he bent down to check on the condition of the fallen boy.”
Ana moved to where Evie was standing, “It was not me who started the fight. They were bullying this innocent girl every day and—” Shaking her head, she sighed. “That was all you could say before another teacher interrupted you.”
“Evie, it is none of your business to teach lessons to bullies. We can handle them. How many fights are you planning to start until you finish your school life, Evie? It is not suitable for a girl to behave like this. I will report this to the principal and he will bring out this issue with your father.” Ana waved her finger in the air like she was the teacher scolding Evie. Her voice was deep and stern, probably the same way the teacher’s voice was.
Exhaling out loud, Ana continued, “After listening and seeing all the drama that unfolded because of me, I finally said my first words to you in a faint voice, Evie.” Smiling at me, she said, “Th…thank you.”
Clearing her throat, she acted out Evie’s dialogue, “Are you okay?”
“Y…yes, I am fine,” Ana replied. “My voice was shaking quite a bit at that time, Evie.”
“Why do girls have to be this innocent all the time and get bullied by the boys?” Exhaling sharply, she shook her head. “That was the question you always asked, Evie.”
Ana took two steps towards me and forwarded her hand to me, “Not everyone is strong like you. I’m Anastasia.”
“I’m Cherry!” I replied instantly.
“Huh?” Ana looked at me with a confused look.
