(Zehra POV)
It is pretty obvious what my fate will be.
Attempting to murder a Royal member always results in death by hanging in front of the village market. No mercy will be shown, not even the mercy of having a final wish.
The King and the queen turned completely deaf to my pleas and announced the verdict and, surprisingly, it was won by a majority of 90 percent of the votes. Everyone looked happy on hearing my death.
Great. I guess it is better to end my life than live a lie.
At dawn, I will be hanged, and my body will be burned. I will be made a sacrifice to the devil for my 'wrongdoing'.
“Zehra!” a familiar voice whispered, making my head snap to the iron gate.
“Dad?”
“And your mom too.” my mom smiled, her eyes filled with tears.
“Oh my god,” Tears filled my eyes and I ran to them. “Mom, Dad. I didn’t do it! I swear I didn’t!” I started to cry as they pulled me into a tight hug.
“We know, my dear. We know our daughter will never do anything like that and that is why we will be helping you escape.”
“What?” I looked confused as Father quickly took a key and opened the prison gate.
“Go! Run away, Zehra. Don’t come back. You have to go and live freely. I wrote your uncle a message, and he said he would wait for you in the eastern village of Elaice.”
“What about you guys?”
“We will live knowing you are alive and safe,” Mom said making me cry harder.
“Don’t cry, my dear child. It's not a forever goodbye. We will come to visit. You should live happily. Change your name and start a new life. A life you want without any judgment. Don’t worry about us, OK?”
“Ok”
Dad and Mom said they had arranged a carriage for me in the east gate so that is where I should go.
“Don’t talk to anyone. Not even the carriage driver. Just act like you are one of his passengers and enter the carriage” Dad said as I nodded my head.
They helped me get out of prison before bidding me a goodbye.
Since almost everyone knows my face, I wore a robe and a mask that completely hid my face. Since I was heading to the trading market it was still very live. The trade carriages are mostly managed at night to not disturb daily life.
Reaching the east gate, I saw a carriage in the corner. I quickly climbed on the back and although the few people in the back looked at me confused, none spoke. It was dark inside, so I was glad my face wouldn't be much visible.
The carriage soon started to move, and I couldn’t help but feel more and more miserable. I knew I would never be able to come back to this place.
All my life I had dedicated my life to being the best I could for the kingdom, disregarding my wishes and needs. But everything vanished in the blink of an eye, and now I can't even walk around using my name freely.
That night I cried myself to sleep.
I was woken up by the sudden break. The carriage came to a halt and I groaned feeling the stiffness in my body.
I heard someone speaking outside and I leaned in to hear more.
“How many passengers?”
“5”
“Everyone has legal authentication to enter?”
“Yes, sir”
I frowned at what I heard. I tried to lean in to hear more but was surprised to see a boy around 12 staring at me.
My eyes widened as I saw scales on his eyes.
It was clear he was not a human.
“Where are we?” I asked as the boy sat up straight.
“Our home.”
“Your home?”
“Yes,” he whispered making my eyes widen.
“This is not Elaice?!”
The boy shook his head making my face turn pale.
Shit! Did I get on the wrong carriage?!
The sheet of the carriage was thrown open as the light of a magical orb entered inside.
“Why are there 6 people?” he asked looking at each one of us. I lowered my head hoping I didn’t get caught.
“Please show me your Identity card,” the guard standing outside said. The people inside started to take out a card before passing it to him.
The guard stared at me, waiting for me to show him the card.
“Who are you?” he asked making me freeze. “get out of the carriage” he ordered seeing how unresponsive I was.
I had no choice but to obey his orders. The people moved back in fear as I got out of the carriage.
“A girl?” the guard said before pulling my hood. “oh? A human girl. Another trespassing citizen of the Aedion kingdom? You girls seriously need to stop thinking we will randomly accept you in the kingdom”
“My apologies. I didn’t mean to. I will leave now”
“Woah woah. Don’t go. I will take you in if you want” The man got inappropriate as he moved closer to me. Before I could react, he grabbed hold of my waist and out of instinct I punched him in the nose.
I knew my hand would have a huge bruise from that punch. I pushed the man before running out of the kingdom gates. But before I could go out other guards caught me.
“Throw this b***h in prison”
And so, once again, I was back to prison. This time, my hands were chained to the wall, and I was made to stand on my knees.
The next day i was woken up when the guards opened the prison door.
“I thought it was just another trespass, Your Majesty, but she attacked us. I knew she was an assassin.”
Assassin? In what way do I look like an assassin to him?
“I am sorry, Your Majesty,” I said, bowing my head as the king approached. “I am not an assassin. I don’t wish to cause any harm to the kingdom. Please consider my pleas and hear what I want to say”
My only option now was to talk things out. I don’t know how far this strategy had gone, but it was the only option I had.
The king didn’t respond, and I knew that things would not go in my favor.
“Your majesty, I am speaking the truth-“ I paused as a loud angry growl filled the air.
“What did you do to her!” he growled before screams filled the air. My head snapped up as I saw the guard from yesterday in the air struggling as the king had his hands tightly around his neck.
My eyes widened as I saw who it was.
Red hair, striking gold eyes, and his neck decorated with dragon scales, I instantly recognized who it was.
“Luka?”
Hearing me call him, made him release the guard. The poor man fell on the ground gasping for air while the king ran to me.
“Zehra” His voice made me shiver.
His eyes were filled with many emotions. Shocked, angry, confused, and many more. He didn’t hesitate to fall on his knees, grabbing the chains that bound me to the wall.
One small move and the chains broke. I fell forward feeling weak, but he wrapped his hands around me.
He growled again, his eyes roaming along my body.
"Who the f**k did this to you and what the hell are you doing here?"
I ground my teeth not knowing what to say. But I knew I needed to get out of this place. It won't be long before the notice of my missing reaches this kingdom.
I can't go back... I don't want to die!
Tears filled my eyes as I took in a shaky breath.
“Get the royal doctor to my room, now!” Luka shouted as the guards scattered around.
He then pulled me up, carrying me bridal style.
“Your Highness?! What are you doing?!” I called as he looked down at me.
“I am taking you to my palace."
"Please put me down. I can walk"
I knew what I said was far from the truth. My knees were completely scraped and useless, and I felt really weak but still... having the king carry me?!
"No. I won't let you go. Not again"
