Chapter 4Melissa found out the San Marcos Valley marked the Independence Day weekend with parades, parties, and a carnival atmosphere. On Saturday, she and Jo watched the big parade in Linda Vista and then attended Organization Day activities on Fort Cochise, where Jo worked. A stranger to the Army ways of pomp and ceremony, Melissa watched with amazement as the troops marched and drilled. Then she and Jo joined a short tour for visitors and military families that was designed to show off some of the new high tech equipment the modern Army used.
A handsome young officer in a crisp green uniform led the group. His shoes were so glossy they almost cast a glare. When Jo saw Charlie had joined the group, she began to flirt with the young captain.
