Sienna POV
“So, Arius has already selected three classes that he believes would be a good fit for you based on your background. History of Fae with Professor Vale, Physical Defence classes and the Fae Masterclass which is taught by myself,” the Fae Elder and head of my species at the Academy said in a slow and calm tone. Her bright eyes were studying me as if I might bolt out of here at the first chance I got, so I smiled politely and leaned back in my chair to show her I was not overwhelmed.
Professor Salsy, or Adelina, which she insisted I call her, was everything I imagined a Fae leader to be. Beautiful, bohemian, intelligent and efficient. She had all my paperwork prepared before I had even entered the room and I could tell that she would no doubt try to sway me into taking classes she believed I would benefit from. But I had a different motive. I wasn’t here for myself. I was here for information and to get close to the elite. So a lot counted on me ensuring I was in the right classes to be able to do that.
I nodded slowly, “The defence classes, are they mixed gender?”
“The advanced classes which you have requested to be in are, but if you would prefer to train with females only, I can put you in the intermediate class-”
“No, no. The advanced class is fine and who is the instructor?” I questioned, needing to make sure I was with the man with silver eyes.
She glanced down at the class schedule before looking back at me with a smile. “Our new teacher, Professor Romano. Arius’ son.” I kept my face neutral, giving away no sign of the absolute glee I was feeling inside. “So if you are happy with the Headmaster’s selection, you can pick two more classes of your own choice.”
She pushed the list towards me across her marble desk and I picked it up, scanning the endless possibilities. There were so many choices. It was now clear why Adelina had been looking at me with gentle concern for the first fifteen minutes of her induction talk as most new students would be feeling out of their depth, but I was prepared. I knew exactly which classes I needed to take, thanks to my roommate’s helpful quality to overshare. “The dark magic class and the supernaturals VS humanity class please.”
The slight raise of her eyebrows didn't go unnoticed at my decisive answers. Dark magic was the other class I knew the silver-eyed man was teaching and, as a fae, I would be able to actually learn how dark magic works to see if I could enhance some of my fae abilities, as some traits were very similar. I knew it would be the most difficult of all the classes to keep up with as I have no experience of dark magic but it was another opportunity to get closer to this elite, so I had to take it. And the other class, well, the name speaks for itself. I was here to protect the humans from these monsters, so it seemed the most obvious choice to find out exactly what they were planning to do in the human world.
“You are a very confident young lady, Miss Stone. I look forward to seeing how you handle yourself in these classes, especially coming into your education at such a late date. If you need any support or guidance, you know where my office is,” she smiled as she scribbled away on a sheet of paper which would be my schedule for my first week. “You will have three classes a day and a free period to either exercise, study or practise your skills. You must stay at the Academy Monday to Friday, including evenings, but you are free to return home on weekends if you wish. I am sure you understand that the use of your abilities outside of class is forbidden and punishments will be enforced if you break the rules. You will find that there is a very lively social scene in the evenings for students. Just remember the rules and we will have no problems. Other than that, I think you are good to go and start your first day at Academy Pro Omnibus, Miss Stone,” she smiled genuinely, showcasing her perfectly straight teeth on her striking face. I had no idea how old the woman was but she didn’t look a day over thirty although her eyes held her experience. I had read in my research that fae can live to be nearly 300 years old, the third oldest life span after witches and vampires, and due to this they age extremely slowly. I had no idea what that meant for me being half fae but I presumed I would live longer than humans.
“Thank you Adelina. I am looking forward to it,” I took the schedule from her hand and internally groaned when I saw I had already missed the first two classes of the day, one being the defence class with Scott Kelp’s murderer and now I had a free period. Oh well, at least I could use that time to report back to Ronnie everything I had found out so far about the elites.
Stopping by the door, I quickly turned, frowning when I saw I had a Fae Masterclass this evening.
“Er Adelina? It says I have a class at 8pm tonight? I thought lessons were only during the day?”
She smiled knowingly, “Tonight is a lesson with the stars. Unfortunately, stars write their own timetables. I will see you tonight.”
I strolled out of Adelina’s office and started to make my way down the pristine corridors, walls decorated with photographs of previous students and plaques of achievements. My phone vibrated in my back pocket and I pulled it out of my jeans, opening the message from Archie.
Hope you are well. Ron said you arrived safely and everything is good. Stay safe and hope you get to call soon. I miss you. A x
My head was lowered, reading his message for the second time, that guilty feeling swirling in my stomach again at his words when I smashed straight into a wall of muscle and stumbled backwards, dropping my phone on the concrete floor.
“Sh*t!” I cursed as I bent down rapidly to retrieve it only to bang heads with the person who had caused me to drop it in the first place. “Ow f*ck!” I rubbed my head from the sudden impact and was about to give this i***t an earful when I glanced up and saw a cheeky smile on a handsome face.
A low chuckle rumbled from his chest as he rubbed his own forehead. “You enjoyed bumping into me so much you just had to do it again?”
I frowned, snatching my phone from his hand as we both stood up. “You didn’t have to bend down to pick up MY phone.” I placed it back in my pocket quickly as his dark eyes twinkled down at me with amusement.
“I was only trying to be chivalrous after being the one to knock it from you in the first place,” he smirked, the grin widening as he looked me over with intrigue.
“My hero,” I muttered sarcastically, side stepping his bulky body to continue down the corridor.
“Harrison,” he said, jogging to keep up with my fast pace until he was walking beside me, taking long strides that matched my rapid ones. I slowed down when I realised I couldn’t out run him.
“Sorry?”
“My name is Harrison. I am guessing you would need to know that when introducing your hero to everyone.”
I rolled my eyes and turned right sharply at the end of the corridor to try and lose him. I had no idea what direction I was walking in or how I would find my way back to my dorm but the sooner I lost this guy the better.
“You are new here?” He made it sound like a question over a statement, even though we both knew the answer. When I didn’t respond, he asked another. “I am guessing you are a last year student? You look too old to be under nineteen.” I scoffed and he quickly backtracked on his insult. “Not that you look old. You look… amazing. I mean you are hot. Sh*t. I am messing this up. Can you just slow down a bit so I can get my words out properly at least?”
I chuckled and shook my head. “I owe you nothing, Harrison. Why would I do you any favours?”
“Maybe because I am just a nice guy trying to make friends with the new girl who clearly has no idea that she is lost and about to end up in the teacher’s headquarters if she doesn’t stop walking soon.”
I halted and huffed. Slowly turning to face this annoyingly eager boy who was all muscle and s**t chat, I tilted my head with sass. “You don’t strike me as a nice guy.”
His face broke into a devilish smile and I couldn't deny that if I was five years younger and single, this guy’s looks would be hard to resist. But I like my men to have more than two brain cells.
“Okay, you’ve got me. I’m not. I am one of the bad ones,” he winked.
I smirked as I folded my arms across my chest in my oversized denim jacket. “So am I.”
“The perfect match,” he teased, and I couldn’t help but smile.
“Fine. I will allow you to show me how to get back to the Ivory Tower,” I pushed past him.
“No way! My dorm is in the Ivory Tower too.”
“What a small world.”
“So you didn’t answer my questions…”
“Yes and yes.”
“Shame. I guess you won’t be in any of my classes. They always stick newbies in the intermediate or beginners.”
“Advanced for me.”
His eyes widened with what I think was shock and respect as he nodded his head. “So you are a badass. I could tell from the moment we bumped heads. Your head was like steel.”
I giggled quietly. “So let me guess. You are a last year, advanced student who thinks he is better than everyone else here?”
“Thought. Past tense. I was put in my place this morning by the prick who took that title for himself,” he snarled, his tone changing to one of venom and I gave him a sideways glance. The amount of testosterone in this place was crazy and I was surprised that fights between these supernaturals didn’t break out every minute of the day.
“No!” I faked my shock. “There is someone more arrogant than you?”
The tension left his face as he smiled down at me with a chuckle. “Yep! My new defence and dark magic teacher. Raiden Romano. He thinks he is god's gift because of his family’s reputation, but what the f*ck has he ever done? And now they expect me to listen to him?”
My interest was piqued at the mention of that name. This guy had met him. Had a lesson with him. And hated him. This could be valuable. I slowed down and looked around, noticing we were near the cafeteria. “Hey, you don’t happen to have a free period right now? Fancy grabbing a coffee and showing me around the grounds? I haven't actually seen outside the academy walls yet.”
His dark brown eyes lit up at my sudden change of heart to spend time with him and I wanted to stroke his face in pity that he believed he had a chance. Poor kid. But if a little flirting would get me extra information, then it was time to ramp it up.
“I would love nothing more than to show you the grounds. There are so many hidden, romantic places that barely anyone even knows about. Happy to take you to every single one.”
“I bet you are,” I smirked as we strolled into the cafe and grabbed a latte to go. I felt him place his large hand on the small of my back as he guided me out of the hall into the gardens. I stifled a chuckle at the gesture. It wasn’t just an excuse to touch me. He was warning off all the other males who were giving me heated glances as we passed.
“I can’t believe I am only just asking this but what is your name?” he leaned down to my ear, his warm breath caressing my skin, which made me want to jump away from him.
Instead, I plastered on my brightest smile and answered, “Sienna.”
“Cool name. I like it,” he grinned. I fought the urge to roll my eyes. Suddenly, I was reminded of Archie and how he would never use the word ‘cool’ to describe anything.
Perhaps, I was capable of missing him too.
