Stroke Of Luck

Sienna POV "Have we met before?" Every fibre of my body wanted to scream at him. Yes. Yes, we had met before. In an airport. I had lost Tommy and a nice young man was taking me to a help desk to help locate him when this man appeared in a puff of purple smoke before us. It was the first time I had ever seen magic. Tommy instantly recognised him from the nightmare of that hospital and knew who he was. That was the day my father came clean and told me that I was fae and he was not my biological father. My mother had died and my dad wasn’t who I thought he was. My entire world shattered. And I was only five. “No. You must have mistaken me for someone else. We have never met,” I replied confidently. He frowned slightly but nodded his head in acceptance. “Perhaps I knew your parents, although it seems unlikely. I have never really known many humans or fae.” Warring emotions fought inside of me at the mention of my parents. He lifted what I presumed was my fake profile Stanley had created of me, keeping my mother’s name and mine as the only truth on it. He sighed as he lowered the file and looked me deep in the eyes. When I saw the emotion swirling in them my natural instinct was to look away, but I forced myself to hold his gaze. “I am very sorry about your mother, Sienna. No child should have to grow up without one.” I gulped as unexpected sadness took over my body. There was something about the way he said it and the look on his face that made him seem so sincere, but I knew he couldn’t be. He wasn’t this person. It was all an act. He was a monster. He was the reason I grew up without my mother. “I think I turned out okay,” my tone came out colder than I intended, but he didn’t look at me with pity like most do. He actually smiled. “I agree. Children who have to grow up quickly turn out to be the strongest adults in the world. I understand you have been on your own for a very long time, Sienna. But hopefully, over time, you will start to let some of us in. It is good to find your people. Trust me. It can change your whole life if you let it.” I stared at him, completely baffled by his kind words. No matter what I was expecting to find in this room, it definitely wasn’t that. “Thank you,” I guessed was a polite response and he nodded his head. “You will meet with the Fae Elder and head of Fae students, Adelina, tomorrow morning so you can decide which classes you should attend to get the most out of your time here. I understand you never knew who your father was so my advice would be to start with the basics. Introduction to magic, fae history classes, Latin and perhaps some defence classes-” “Sorry to interrupt, but I don’t think that will be necessary. I have taught myself magic since the age of five. I have also attended human martial arts, defence and kick-boxing classes since I was a teenager.” I would be bored shitless if I was put in classes and had to pretend I knew nothing. If I was going to be stuck here for however long, I wanted to at least get something out of it. Perhaps my classes would even help me to complete my mission here. I smirked at the twisted thought. “Wow. Okay. That’s impressive. I didn’t mean any offence, but the advanced classes for your age are quite intense and the students don’t hold back. Maybe we start you in the intermediate classes to see how you get on.” “No. I would like to be put in the advanced classes please. For all of them.” He leaned back and folded his muscular arms across his chest, regarding me carefully with a sadistic grin. It was the first time I saw his polished headmaster smile falter and I knew I was seeing more of his real character right now. “You remind me a lot of someone very special to me. You have fire and determination. Two traits that go a long way in my book. Okay. You can start in the advanced classes on one condition.” “Yes?” “If you can’t keep up or are finding it too much, you do not let your ego get in your way. There is no shame in asking for help now and again.” I pursed my lips together, pretending to think about his condition. I would never do that. But he didn’t need to know. “Deal.” “Excellent. I think you will fit in here perfectly, Sienna. I have a good feeling about you,” he said with so much enthusiasm that it caused a huge smile to light up my face. Oh how little he knew! “I can’t wait. Thank you for letting me come,” I stood up from my seat just as a knock sounded on the door and a beautiful girl poked her head around it. “Ah, Neve, perfect timing. Sienna, this is your new room mate, Neve Chevilier. Neve is a final year student and will be able to help you navigate around the academy until you get your bearings.” “He means babysit you,” the brown-eyed girl with mocha skin and light brown ringlets teased, giving Arius a wink. “Behave Neve and be nice to our new friend,” he answered, laughter hidden behind his voice. This was an odd teacher and student relationship if ever I had seen one and it was clear to see that these two were closer than that. This could work in my favour. If my roommate knew the hybrid well, I would be able to get even more intel quicker. “I am always nice!” the girl faked her hurt at his comment before glancing over to me and looking me up and down. “Come on, newbie. Let me show you what good girl Amelie would have failed to mention,” she turned out of the room with a strut and I glanced back at Arius, who was chuckling and shaking his head. “Good luck, Sienna. I will check in with you in a few days to see how you are settling in.” I nodded and followed the spirited girl out into the corridor. She was already about ten steps ahead of me and I had to jog to keep up. “Hey, so you honestly don’t have to babysit me. Just show me where our room is and then I can take it from there,” I said quickly as a group of students pushed past me in the corridor. Neve suddenly stopped and turned to me with her hands on her hips. Wow, this girl had sass. “Look. You can do whatever you want in this place, but trust me when I say, if you want to have fun and not just learn, then you will want to stick with me. This place is awesome for learning your craft, but there is a lot of trouble to be had too! The good kind, if you know what I mean.” She winked and I frowned. I had no idea what she meant. I didn’t go to school or colleges like other humans growing up. As soon as I was in Stanley’s care, I was home-schooled by the best of the best. The social aspect of school was never a huge part of it. I had friends like Ronnie and Val but that was pretty much it. “Also, Arius would only have stuck you in a room with me for a reason. He does everything on purpose,” she turned quickly and started strutting once again in her heels. That is when I noticed what she was wearing. In fact, what most of the girls in this place seemed to be wearing. Dresses. Long, lacy or silky, figure-hugging dresses. Was there a dress code I missed? Maybe getting in with this girl was a good idea after all. “Umm, am I missing something? Why are all the girls here dressed for the prom?” She chuckled, “The queen just released her new line. We are all going crazy for it. Last season it was furs and now it's lace and silk. I’ll get you one. I have contacts,” she flicked her bouncy curls over her shoulder and I tried to quickly process which of that information I should jump on first. The spy in me wanted to grill her about her contacts and the queen, but a twenty-year-old would probably approach the fashion side first. “Oh. Thanks, but I, um, don’t think it’s my style. I’m more of a leather and denim kinda girl.” Her eyes gave me a sideways glance as she looked my casual outfit up and down with distaste. “So you know the queen? Is that the tribrid queen?” She gave me a baffled look before responding, “Where have you been? Living under a rock? Yes, the tribrid queen. Ruby is my mother’s best friend.” I wanted to smile brightly knowing I had just hit the jackpot having her as a roommate. “Wow. That’s cool. So is your mother a tribrid too?” The SIA only knew of two currently, the queen and her brother, the man with silver eyes that I was sent here to find but there was a possibility there could be more. She scoffed. “Goddess, no! My mom is a witch. She works here at the academy as the potions professor, which sucks.” “And your dad?” I asked. “A wolf. He is the beta to King Alpha Ezra. Practically runs the Blood Moon Pack as the King deals with, well you know, kingly duties.” I was mentally taking note of all this information. We knew very little about the elites and what roles they all played, so this was amazing information and I couldn’t quite believe I was getting it all without having to torture anyone. I suddenly froze and she turned, regarding me with an impatient expression. “So does that mean you are a hybrid?” “Oh jeez. You really are clueless. Yes. As my parents are equal in power, I have a wolf and magic. It is quite rare. Arius is also a hybrid. His father was the Vampire King and his mother was the most powerful dark witch to date. Until Ruby, of course. Now let’s give the questions a rest and get something to eat. You must be starving.” I hadn’t even noticed that we were already standing outside the doors to that circular, grand hall again until she pushed them open and the noise engulfed me once more. I followed her up to a huge buffet table which was stacked with the most elaborate varieties of cuisine from all over the world. Suddenly, my stomach growled and I grabbed a plate when I realised I hadn’t eaten since the airport this morning. Piling it high because I was never a girl who shied away from her food, we made our way over to an empty table. It was no longer as busy as it was when Amelie led me through, but there was still a vibrant and playful buzz as groups of supernatural students chatted and laughed at their tables. “So you are fae? Pure blood?” Neve questioned, studying my face. “No. My mother was human. I never knew my father but I have fae abilities,” I said before taking a bite out of the chicken wrap. I closed my eyes and moaned. It was delicious. “Okay, okay. Maybe keep that to yourself. People are a little judgy when it comes to humans around here,” she said as she stabbed her fork into her own food. So they really did have a hatred for humans. It was becoming quite clear from both Amelie and Neve’s advice. It was inline with what I had always encountered in the human world. “Why is that?” I pressed. She shrugged her shoulders. “There are just a lot of students here that have a lot to prove. You know, expectations to live up to or packs, covens or clans to one day lead. They see half users as the weakest of the bunch and easy targets in training to boost their egos. Don’t worry though, I am sure Arius will put you in the beginners' classes. That is where most of the half users are. It is safer that way.” I scoffed, shaking my head. Oh, I couldn’t wait to kick some supernatural butt. “I am starting in the advanced classes.” Her eyes widened and she choked on her food, coughing dramatically to try and clear her throat. “You are kidding?” I shook my head, not phased by her reaction. I was quite enjoying it actually. She sat back with a smirk. “Girl! I cannot wait to see what you’ve got!” Suddenly, the hall door whipped open and the entire hall fell silent as three figures walked in. The powerful aura that rippled off them even caused me to pause my chewing as I took in their insanely good looks. Two young men and one young woman. The biggest of the three with jet- black hair was so tall and muscular he actually looked like a Greek god, the other man, who had light brown waves that were floppy over his forehead, was much more athletic in build and gave off a very calming but by no means less powerful aura. But it was the girl that was almost half their size that stood between them both that stole my attention. Despite her size, she looked fierce. Her hair was almost white and her skin so smooth and porcelain she looked like a doll. Neve checked over her shoulder to see who I was staring at and then returned to her food with a small smile. “The Romano Black Triplets.” My eyebrows furrowed at her as I pulled my gaze away from the alluring siblings who all shared a clear resemblance although they had their own unique traits. “Who?” She rolled her eyes, obviously everyone but me seemed to know who they were. “The King and Queen’s children and Arius’ grandchildren.” Even my cool undercover mask slipped at this news. The SIA had no idea they existed. My amber eyes widened as I caught the backs of their bodies leaving the hall and the chatter seemed to erupt now their presence was gone. “And they attend here? Like other students?” “Of course. Lorcan, Leif and Ilaria are the most famous students in the school and my best friends,” she smirked and I nearly dropped my wrap. “So, they are also tribrids? Is that why they radiated so much power and commanded the room?” She continued to stab her fork into her food while I abandoned mine. This was all far more interesting. “Strangely, no. Everyone was surprised, expecting them to be tribrids, even their parents. But they each have only one race. Lorcan is a wolf, Leif is a warlock and Ilaria is a vampire. But the most powerful of their kinds. Many believe they are destined to be the next joint leaders of the supernaturals and that is why it has happened.” I nodded slowly. It made perfect sense. I studied this hybrid girl as she munched away at her dinner with absolutely no idea who she was sharing a room with and unknowingly giving important information to and almost felt bad. Almost. I hadn’t seen these supernaturals' true selves yet. But I knew I would. At some point, they will reveal who they really are and what they set out to do in the human world. All I had to do was wait, observe and dig deeper. “So, Queen Ruby is the only tribrid?” I asked innocently. I already knew the answer but I needed confirmation. She shook her head. “Honestly, I can’t believe you don’t know any of this! I suppose growing up alone in the human world really has affected you! You have a lot to learn. No, Ruby has a brother although he was born twenty-one years after her! He is also a tribrid. They are the only two.” So he was the same age as me, although everyone here believed me to be only twenty. My heart rate started to increase as I directed the conversation towards the information I really needed. “Oh actually, I think I have heard of him. Doesn’t he have really unique eyes or something?” She nodded, swallowing a mouthful of food before she spoke. “Silver. He is only a few years older than us and girl… when I tell you he is drop dead gorgeous… I mean it!” “Oh really?” I raised my eyebrow suggestively, pretending to be interested in such things. “Damn. If he is a few years older, I guess he doesn’t go here anymore?” A sly, mischievous smile adorned her face and her chocolate eyes twinkled. “You are in luck! Rumour has it, he has just been appointed the new dark magic professor and defence instructor!” I shared her beaming smile. Luck very much seemed to be on my side.
