As he walked away, I stood there, feeling foolish until I noticed the receptionist watching me with a kind smile.
"Is he always in a bad mood?" I asked.
She shook her head. "Not that I've seen. He's never spoken to me before, and he's always busy. Maybe he just doesn't like you, though you still have five minutes before you're considered late."
I frowned, wondering why my mate seemed to enjoy belittling me. Was it because I challenged him yesterday? My past toxic experiences made me wary, but this was different—this was my mate. I wasn't here for the money or benefits, though they were a plus. I wanted to be close to him.
Thank goodness Mark was on my side. Busy behind his desk, he gave me a thumbs up. "I see you got my message," he said with a smile. "Welcome aboard."
