Chapter FiveLord Ravenscar came down to breakfast early, but there was no sign of Romara and he had almost finished when she came into the room.
“Good morning, Romara,” he said, rising to his feet.
He intended to tease her about being late and then he saw her face.
“What has happened?” he asked.
She came slowly to the table and sat down, waving away the food the butler offered to her.
Then, as they withdrew, she blurted out,
“A letter came for Caryl this morning.”
“A letter?” Lord Ravenscar repeated.
“Fortunately I was with her when it was brought to her and as she was feeding the baby she took no notice of it.”
Romara handed the letter to Lord Ravenscar, which she had concealed in her lap, and went on,
